Saveway Mart saved the day during the great black out of ’08. After spending literally two hours looking around for ice, I had given up. Stores up and down High St. were posting big signs that said«No Ice» and I was starting to believe them. That is until the torn awning of Saveway Mart caught my eye. The store had power so the lights were blinding to me. But after initial shock I saw a cooler full of ice humming in the corner. Apparently not aware of the shortage going on, the cooler was stocked to the brim and super cheap at a dollar a pop. I stuffed one under each arm and grinned my way to the front. The store itself was«eclectic»? Semi dirty and dingy but selling bottles of Veuve and Moet Chandon. They had a back wall that seemed plastered with adds for rolling papers. None of this mattered as I drug my ice to the front and made my purchase. The storekeepers were so impressed(or frightened) by my zealous thanking for the ice they threw in another bag. If I am ever in that area again I will always stop at Saveway to honor the store that made cold beverages possible during the great blackout of ’08. I will never forget their kindness.

This is my local convenience store, on the corner of 3rd ave and Summit. The Corner Store, a.k.a: the Co’ No’ Sto’. It is dirty. It usually looks like it was recently ransacked and often smells funny, but those are the only bad things that I can think of saying about the ‘Sto. Wait, I forgot there is a pretty ghetto housing project right across the street so the clientelle often reflects that but otherwise… all good. The owner, Rick, used to be in there every day until he moved back to Jersey two years ago. That’s him on the Corona poster over the beer coolers with each arm around a Corona Promotions girl. Now his two cousins run the show every day and it really is a familly affair. They treat the regulars like family(I haven’t needed exact change in two years). When Camel discontinued my friends favorite kind of smokes in the Columbus market the Co’ No’ Sto’ dudes found some when they were out of town visiting family and bought every carton that store had. Now my friend can have his fav’s whenever he wants. They sell smokes, beer, milk, butter, cheese(by the block, pack or slice), pickles, spam, lottery tickets, hats and T-shirts, pet food, frosting, Candy!(AWESOME $.25 candy selection), bread, blunt wraps, Air Jordans, Boast Mobile phones, beef stew, toilet paper, Moet Chandon White Star and just about everything inbetween. Open til 1am Fri. and Sat. and midnight every other day.
