Brewers drive-in is a little red barn on a hill surrounded by cars… always a good sign. The sign outside says bbq, slug burgers and sandwiches. There is a walk up window outside, where customers are picking up call-in orders. We decided to eat in. Inside are about 6 tables and a counter, surrounded by menu boards and a desert case with home made pies. Then we see the sign… Cash Only, no checks! The owner asks what I want to order and I ask if they accept any cards… the answer… there is an ATM machine accross the street… I only take real money he says with a smile. Ok… so a trip to the atm n then we can order. I am a shrimp lover, n the shrimp Po boy is calling my name. About this time, the owner says«are you going to have some fried chicken with me». What? I just couldn’t pass on the shrimp po boy, and it did not disappoint. Good bread and loaded with lots of hot n fresh fried shrimp. Because a good po boy is judged by how many shrimp fall out when you eat it lol. Oh and alot fell out. We also had the Italian beef sandwich, which was flavorful and dripping with juice. The nacho cheese sticks were crusted with crumbled tortilla chips and were also quite good. When we got our food, the owner and his wife brought out plates of fried chicken and sat at the table beside us and started to talk to us. We learned all about the history of the area, the history of the diner, and what a slug burger actually is. A slug burger is a combination of ground soy protein, pork fat, bread crumbs and seasonings, formed in a Pattie and fried in pork fat. It is served on a hamburger bun with mustard and pickles. It was created in Corinth, MS as a substitute for meat, in the days of cotton farms, and the poor wanted something that tasted like meat. We probably spent almost 2 hours talking with the owners about their town, their diner, and about life… If you are ever in Corinth, MS… make sure to stop in at Brewers drive in for some good food and some true southern hospitality.

Cash Only! This diner was established in the mid-70s. It is a red barn building perched up on a hill. It was a pretty good place to eat back in the 80s when there was much more traffic on Shiloh Rd, known as the ‘strip’ to any person of driving age in the 80s. About 1 mile of this road was the place all the high schoolers would drive back and forth and just cruise. An ordinance was passed, maybe in the 90s, prohibiting cruising and parking and that area has a ghost town feel. Brewer’s has a pretty extensive menu for the size of the building. There is enough seating for about a dozen people. There is a pie case full of pies from coconut to pecan. They offer plate lunches for $ 6.50, cheeseburger is $ 4.45, BBQ and they have added Italian Beef. I’m going to sit on the one star rating until the quality improves. They did win an award, voted on by the newspaper poll, for ‘best hamburger’ but it was back in 2010 and 2011. Today’s visit was the first one for me in a good while. I was handed my cheeseburger and I walked straight to the car and opened it to check it for accuracy. The foil wrap was cold. The bun was cold. The wafer thin hamburger patty was extremely cold. The cheese wasn’t even adhered to the patty, let alone melted, because the patty was so cold. I was the only customer and really expected to get a hot meal. If they served me a patty that cold on a slow day it just makes me really wonder HOWLONG ago had that meat been cooked? To each their own.
