Zubies Chicken Coop

I’m one of the dirty dozen from the Costa Mesa Post office that got caught there on Saturday tacos at the original Zubies. John was great. The supervisor came in and he cleared the bar and set up waters and sodas for every mail carrier there. Now to the review. I loved the Thursday prime rib. I would get a center cut an have it thrown on the grill an cooked to perfection. Now that I know it lives on, I will see you there.

Been coming to this spot and can’t find one thing I don’t like everything is amazing. The food is well priced and comes in large portions. This spot is cash only they do have a atm.

I’ve been coming to «the coop» for many years. It’s always a good time, with large food portions, and just good food. This place is totally off the radar, very low key, and a usual hangout for locals. The bar gets crowded and loud at night, which is part of the draw.
REMEMBER — - Zubies is CASH ONLY!!!

Love going to the Coop for breakfast. Yummy food and great service and very reasonable prices. Love the relaxed atmosphere.

I don’t give a shit what others posted in the way of the negative side, My wife and I have been coming here for several years and the food and service has been awesome. The staff treat us like kings and our food is perfect every time. Maybe it might be because we tip them well and are locals, but we love the joint! We eat and drink there at least once a week.

After the Omelette Parlor closed, I was left without a backup breakfast spot to bring visiting loved ones. (Charlie’s Chili moved from 2 to #1.) I did some research, ordered and ate «my» breakfast (poached eggs… yeah I know, *yawn*) again and again while my family & friends etc gave their opinions of the more exciting dishes. It’s literally been years and I am still looking!
Zubies isn’t in a great spot. It’s an easy walk but crossing the highway isn’t a pleasant walk. This explains why it took so long to try it. Turns out I wasn’t missing much!
I have 3 basic requirements for breakfast. 1. Good poached egg. 2. Lots of appealing menu options for my guests 3. Walking distance.
It never even occurred to me that «no one else’s food on my fork/​spoon» needed to be a requirement!
In short, Zubies Chicken Coop gives actual chicken coops a bad name. It was filthy! I try to be cool. It’s just breakfast, right? And even at home an occasional chunk gets stuck between the fork tines. But when I asked for a fresh fork, it was worse than the first! None of us ate much and we all resented the tip we left for the slow & inattentive server. Plus, he made me feel stupid for ordering a poached egg! I like poached eggs, ok?!?

This week we decided to try The Chicken Coop. We had a late breakfast there on saturday which was really pretty good and I was looking forward to leaving a good review after lunch there today.
Sadly, I won’t be able to. We arrived at about 1 and the coop was about half full. A gentleman approached us and said «Hello Guys» (I’m very obviously a woman) He seated at the the bar and after about a minute with our menus he was back to take our order. Since the menus had only the names of the dishes, without any description we were having a little trouble making our minds up, and again, he’d only given us a minute to look. He asked if we needed more time, which we did. But he was back almost exactly 2 minutes later, this time clapping his hands sharply as he arrived at out table. «Okay, you ready?» Nope, still not ready, but a little annoyed at this point. We inquired about the cider choices, but this «full bar» doesn’t even offer 1 hard cider. Okay, whatever.
So he got the picture and let us have time with our menus. This time when he came back he smacked his hands down on the tabletop and said «It’s now or never, you gonna order?» As he said this he picked up my menu. I was so stunned that my natural response which would have been «Never!» was lost in a muted order for something I didn’t even want anymore.
We sat for a minute or two after we ordered, shocked at his rudeness, then got up, cancelled our order and GTFO.

Went in for drinks. The place was dirty and the bar was full of crusty old drinkers. Not too many of them where friendly. They gave off they prison eyes. We had a round of drinks after waiting for 15 minutes for Sal the bartender to show up. He was rude and straight up a jackhole. We finished our drinks waited another 15 minutes for Sal to close us out. He had better things to do eating popcorn and talking to locals. We left cash on the bar and left never to return. This place is a dump and not even a good dive bar. Head else where.

Great service! Had calamari rings, so bad, bland very meh also had jalapeño poppers even more Bland served with jam? Pizza came and tasted like microwave pizza from the 90’s. I would not give this food too a homeless person. Never again
9÷30÷14 — I’ve been in the bathroom all morning, I’ve been throwing up the jalapeño poppers with carrots and celery why hasn’t this digested yet? Now I’m at work feeling so shitty, I’m so upset with myself for eating this shitty food.

Cool spot for Oatmeal, Soup, Bloody Mary’s and Breakfast! Servers are always nice. It’s been awhile but I’ll be back.

I keep going back, nostalgically hoping it will be better and it never is. The pizza is good and a few other things, but the breakfast was awful.
I think I’m done.

Tonight I enjoyed the breasted chicken with a cheese chili relleno rice and beans… Heaven!
I highly recommend. My friend had the chicken fried steak and it was delicious as well. I highly recommend this location

This place is all about the ambience. If you are looking for high class, head further south to the sand. If you want great down home cooking with a flip flop, t-​shirt kinda style then here is where you should be on Sunday morning! Horacio is the owner and is on site making sure everything is perfect.

Its about a block from homee & a wierdddddd place. Very inconsistant its been bad good great.
Took ribs to go once and it was fantastic had breakfast there once and it was a poor dennys experiance. Had a burger there and it was good and a steak and it was so so. Im told the salmon is awesome?
The place serves steak and lobster and doesnt take a Credit card or ATM/​debit card? huh???
Yep…cash and checks! (dont even know where my checks are) I would not be surprised if they took barter or I owe you?
If you think thats strange you should see the interior. Its bates motel strange… much like a grandma was wallpapering the place in 1955 and ran out of wallpapber so she just used another type of paper and continues till she got tired and decided to paint over it. it is ODD guys real ODD…
I dont know what else to say but it could be good or not? LOL

Been going to Zubies for years. Always great food and service. You can never go wrong with the steak and chicken dinners.

I have been sitting here for over an hour and have not yet received my food or a refill on the water that was initially brought. Very poor service. Orders came wrong. Would not recommend.

Peanut shells for the flooring! We’ve been eating here for years for good reason… the food is great and a bargain. I always have a couple of their tacos and fill up on salty peanuts in the shell (which becomes part of the décor) before even ordering. By the time I finish off the huge dinner salad and the entrée arrives I’m usually pretty full. The chicken dinner, fish tacos, pizza, fish and chips and steaks are all excellent and the portions are ridiculous. Zubies is a place to unwind without being surrounded by the pretentious snobs you usually find in OC restaurants.

This restrant has been around for years. It has cone down hills lately. Had spagutti last night. It was full of water, about one half cup. Its been bad for a wile now. Too bad, it use to be great.

Total throwback down home restaurant feel. All ages in the bar area that was way more busy than the dining room. Simple food selections and they give you an obnoxiously large amount of it. They want to fatten me up so other restaurants don’t look at me.
Roger was my bartender and hooked me up with the steak and stuff. Which was damn good and came with everything you’d want/​expect.
He terribly overpours drinks and if he wasn’t doing it for everyone I would have suspected he was trying to get me drunk. Maybe he knows I don’t put out?
Good place if you’re hungry and thirsty. I’ll go back fer sure.
