The new cranston YMCA director, apparently to show the employees«who is boss», fired the head youth swim team coach and the two other coaches resigned in protest(which speaks volumes). This shortsighted action effectively ruined what was a robust youth swim team. Its probably worth noting for parents who may be considering sending their children there for swim training, swim team or other activities that the new director is a comedian who is fond of VERY inappropriate language, and perhaps more disturbing, VERY inappropriate subject matter. Not exactly what you want in a director of a youth-oriented organization. The Greater Providence YMCA executives apparently support management by intimidation and arrogance in their«leadership», if you can call it that, which is why I’ve taken my $ 1500 per year to a place that respects its members and actually listens to them. I refuse to give another dime to any branch of the GPYMCA, as do most all of the(now-former) Cranston swim team parents.

I have been going to this YMCA for a few years now. The staff is amazing and really makes a big difference in making an average gym above average. Lately this place has kicked it up a notch. Renovated gym, exterior, and a few other minor improvements. It has everything you could want in a basic gym plus it features a full size pool and basketball court. Yes, full size, not half size like a la fitness down the road. While it is not the newest gym on the block this place is a family friendly and more importantly CLEAN and safe place to workout.

I’ve been going here since I moved to Cranston in 2010. I was a little hesitant because I had been a member at Gold’s for so long and I wasn’t sure if the gym itself would measure up, but the different services that the Y has to offer make-up for the lack of size in the actual gym. They offer childcare during peak time, there is a full size pool, group exercise classes, and plenty of different programs. If you have kids, then I definitely recommend the Y. You can also use your Y membership at other Y’s in New England.
