This 1.6 mile round trip trail is short, but nothing short of gorgeous :)! the dirt and gravel trail is lined with trees and rocks while beautiful views of crater lake peek through the trees sporadically. After a series of short switchbacks, we climbed to a 180 degree lookout where we could see the full majesty of Wizard Island very clearly, as well as the surrounding picturesque landscape. This family friendly trail is the best way to experience Crater Lake within a short time span(we spent a mere hour hiking this gem) and the trailhead is only a short drive west from Rim Village. Would be nice to view sunset from here as well.

This is a great hike! The hike is short: 0.8 miles one way with a gain of 420 feet which isn’t bad at all. The view is probably the best I’ve seen at Crater Lake! You’re literally above the entire lake looking down, and the view is very clear. There’s a little house at the top, where we ran into a park ranger looking out for fires throughout the park. The hike itself isn’t bad, although there’s not much shade. This is not a lot of work for a magnificent view at the top; I would definitely recommend this if you come to Crater Lake!

Watchman Peak is a 1.6 mile round-trip hike with a 420 feet elevation gain. The trailhead location is 3.8 miles northwest of Rim Village. The hike to the lookout tower is tough, and thankfully, short. It’s a constant incline on a well maintained dirt trail. Once you get to the tower, there are steps that lead to the viewpoint. The view is one of the entire lake, with Wizard Island closest to us. This is a great spot for photos. the hike down is a piece of cake, although the dirt trail is a bit slippery, so watch your step. The total hike including photo opportunities at the top should take about an hour to one and a half hours. It’s definitely worth it.
