What a great surprise ! If you are looking for a resort type ambience and buffet, this is not for you. If you like great tasting food, in a unique home style setting with excellent service you won’t be disappointed here. Friendly and tasty, in the heart of Redwood Country, that’s how you describe the H Café. Food: outstanding. Corned beef and hash and eggs is fabulous. My wife had Grandma’s French Toast and devoured it — delicious. Ambience: unique, …in a good way. Service: prompt. Attentive. Friendly. They keep your hot coffee and/or tea coming. Piping hot. Prices: totally reasonable, and some items they offer ½ portions. Really. Like. This. Place.

Ok, not the best food ever, like they claimed. Just an old greasy spoon. Kind of expensive for the quality of food offered. The place could use some remodel.

I stopped here on the way to Oregon and right as I walked into the door I was greeted with a smile and was told that I can sit wherever I would like. Right away they brought me water and gave me something to read because they saw me reading stories from the back of the menu. I got frenh toast, 2 eggs overhard and 2 slices bacon. The bacon was noce and crispy just like I like it and the french toast by far was the best! Great customer service and friendly workers

The idea of enjoying a meal in an historic café on our last day of vacation drew me to this place and I’m happy to say that I wasn’t disappointed. I love the location which is just outside of the majestic groves that make up Redwoods National Park /Jedediah Smith state park. We were greeted most hospitably which is always a nice feeling when traveling far from home. My 10-year old didn’t want to order from the kid’s menu and decided to order 2 «sissy» pancakes. Our waitress kindly suggested that he order just one and she’d fire up the grill for a second pancake once he was close to finishing. My 7-year old played it safe and ordered one pancake from the kid’s menu. The sissy pancake was huge as was the kid’s size pancake! It was so nice to receive a large platter of fresh butter and a pitcher of warm syrup. My boys loved their pancakes! I ordered the 3-meat omelette which was very sizeable, too… and delicious! I strongly recommend stopping by this charming place!

Stopped in on Mother’s Day. In addition to our other food, we shared a HUGE blueberry pancake(I’m going to have the rest of it for brunch today). DELICIOUS! Many places with huge pancakes either have a doughy, undercooked center or they’ve been cooked too long. This was perfect. Very enjoyable. Our waitress was super! We even got to meet the owner. Unfortunately the place is up for sale:(& I just found it. Hope when it sells, the new owners carry on the good food & hospitality tradition.

For the past 30 years, every time I visit Crescent City, California, I make it a point to head up to Hiouchi, and have breakfast. This café has gone through some changes over the years, but is right back were it use to be. The food is great, the service is nice and prompt. Order a pancake that is as big as your FACE. you’ll Love it!

The folks in this café are just so darn nice! Our server said«I’m helping out my granma…» and, what can you do but smile? We ordered the gigundo cinnamon roll, and she said, «it comes with lots of butter on it!» Again, smile. They were very busy on a July weekend but with apologies and smiles, took orders, refilled coffee cups and chatted with the regulars. We’re not fisherpeople, but it sure looked like lots of fishermen/women make Hiouchi’s a regular stop when they’re on the way to favorite fishing holes in the area. The 4(yes, 4!) egg omelette with cheese and mushrooms was great. And, the chef made the rounds as things quieted down, asking patrons how their meals were. When does that ever happen in a diner? It does here! In the middle of nowhere, but on the road to somewhere — if you’re nearby and hungry, put on the brakes and make a stop. Yes. Do.

This café is in a wooden building built in the 1940s for a store and gas station with emphasis on serving fishermen. It has an old fashioned look and very casual, friendly atmosphere. I had the cheeseburger that came with tomato, lettuce, onion and pickle. it was good and the coleslaw was better than average – not a watery as usually served. It is a little pricey but then it is rather isolated so costs are probably above average.

I give this place 5 stars! 1. Instant friendly customer service 2. The breakfast was homemade and delicious 3. The chef checked on us to see how the food was 4. The waitress gave us very helpful touring info 5. Prices are cheap for large quantity I’m from Juneau, Alaska and one of the things that bother me the most is horrible customer service. This place was awesome, I highly recommend this café to anyone in the area and we will go back again for our next Redwood Forrest trip.

Hiouchi Café excels at making hearty breakfasts that fishermen can enjoy prior to steelhead fishing on the Smith. They are open early enough to accommodate anglers and likely have the best breakfast in the area. This place is in the heart of winter steelhead fishing and the owner can often be seen taking orders, making crispy bacon and cleaning tables. It’s a true mom and pop — the kind that don’t exist anymore in big cites. As for the food, breakfast is good and the portions are large. Enough to keep you full for several hours while fishing. Between the three of us, we sampled most of what in on the breakfast menu and nothing fell short of expectations. Come here for breakfast and you’ll leave full and satisfied.

This is a straight up, old school diner complete with colorful locals hanging out gossiping. We stopped in for lunch and were the only patrons in the place(well, the only eating customers!) and really loved how warm and friendly everyone inside was. The food was average but that’s just fine when you are traveling– no one is looking for gourmet then. I had the BLT with fries and found the fries to be pretty darn tasty! I would definitely stop here again when driving out to the coast.

This one is a winner for breakfast. There really aren’t that many choices for breakfast in Crescent City. This one is so good we ate there two days in a row. Biscuits and gravy were excellent. The biscuits alone were just great, fluffy and fresh. Omelettes were just great and the hot cakes were giant size, covered the plate. Kids had plenty to eat and loved it. Be informed that it has an old local diner atmosphere; the locals eat there regularly, evident by the owner and patrons parting often exchanging names. We loved it.

The Historic Hiouchi Café has been a favorite food stop, especially when I stay at the Hiouchi Motel next door. I enjoy the food and feel of the small community there. It’s an older establishment, but I like eating there as much as any place in the Crescent City area. They now have a website with days, hours and new phone number.

Great staff — BLT and fries were the best I’ve had for a long time. Great help to find local services for an «out-of-towner». I’d recommend this place as a good lunch stop while enjoying the magnificent nearby giant redwoods.

The food will fill you up. If you’ve been sleeping in the woods for a week a visit to the hooch won’t disappoint. The cook cares about what he’s doing. I wouldn’t bring small children. The wait staff have little patience for it.

Great little café located next to the Hiouchi Motel, just down the road a ways from Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park. We came here a couple times for breakfast, which was pretty decent. They offer breakfast specials, and one morning I ordered the $ 5.99 special which comes with 2 eggs, 2 buttermilk pancakes, and bacon or sausage. The coffee isn’t too good, but oh well… can’t have everything I suppose ;-) I saw a sign in the window that said«help wanted» so I inquired if they needed a cook. Our waitress told me that yes, they did need a cook, and I told her that they should look no further, that I was the best cook around. Haha! This is mostly a local hangout — not too many tourists here except for those passing through on their way to Oregon or the redwoods.

Passing through on Hwy 199, the only café in a very small town named Hiouchi, outside of Jedediah Smith State Park. Try the smoke pork chop. It’s the bomb. They only open for breakfast and lunch during the week and lunch on the weekends. The locals sit in one room and the tourist sit in the other. Reminds me of segregation. Big breakfast! Everything made fresh, nothing from the freezer or microwaved. They use Taylor’s sausage. I had the juiciest chicken apple links and the hash brown were crispy. There are pictures of the local men with their big fat fish. Don’t b_about the coffee. It’s a small town.
