Arriving to Crested Butte late in the day after traveling for almost a week coming up from the SW. Too late for camping I was exhausted, so I map quested and made a few calls. Rita the owner and host was so warm and inviting, almost insisting and I am so glad she did. The property is gorgeous, comfortable and location, location, location… The B&B has some townie bikes so I didn’t have to unload mine, I was given easy directions and great advice for food and fun things to do. Rita and I later chatted up a storm, shared wine and cheese. My bed was comfy and the accommodations clean and warm. Breakfast was wonderful and accommodating to my Gluten Free Diet. We got up for an early hike and I made some more friends. Yeh! This would be my #1 choice visiting CB. Rita has had her business here for 25yrs.

My last visit to Crested Butte just before Thanksgiving, I was nursing a severely sprained ankle. I already knew that my plans for hiking again in the Ruby Mountains was a non-starter, but I figured it was a great place to rest and start rehabbing. I had forgotten that a massage school had opened a few years before, and now the town was awash in massage practitioners filling the small second story retail spaces along the side streets. Using the comfort of Last Resort B & B as my base, I researched the best hands in CB and made appointments with all I could see in my three days there. The owner of the lodge was a lovely woman with ties to Bucks County, Pa., an artist and very interesting conversationalist. Stories are my soul food, and I was happy to exchange them with her over breakfast, late afternoon wine and cheese, and mid-night caps. I had a variety of massage and physical therapy modalities, sometimes double and triple sessions that were both painful and healing. Some hands were highly skilled and intuitive, while others were pretenders. My ankle knew the difference. The most effective was ice therapy guided by a PT dude who had me writhing in freezing discomfort while he dug out the root of the dis-ease. Amazing! By necessity I spent more time than planned indoors, but the woman of the house was so accommodating that neither of us minded. It gets lonely up around 9,000 feet in the off season, and both of us were good for quality talk. Surprisingly, I felt good enough the third day to decide to remain a 4th. I drove out to a trailhead east of town, and managed a ridge walk to watch a sunset that set the sky on fire. The trip would have been incomplete without it. Last Resort, indeed.
