Very tasty general tso in area hands down. wish they had more vegetables in their pork fried rice but still fresh and for the price at about $ 6 which is the lunch special included soda or soup was a happy reminder why I love this place.

Confirmed last time I stopped in that ownership has changed. Place looks a mess, disheveled. Food quality has gone way downhill and recipes have changed, which is a shame because the previous food was really good, and it was our go-to place for chinese… Oh well, guess it’s onto Wang or Xin Hua.

3÷25÷15 update: Must be new owners. The place is now dingy, unkept and the food is not very good. The ventilation is awful as well. It’s so smoky inside that my eyes were burning for hours afterwards, not to mention my clothes smelling of old grease. Low mein was salty and the quality of the beef below average and tough. The chicken broth was tasteless. It’s a shame — I used to love this place under previous ownership.

I’ve been getting my takeout at Luen Hop for a few years now, and it seems like the quality has been steadily going downhill. In the last year, several of my orders have either been missing items, or incorrect items were placed in the takeout bag. The Lo Mein has become very salty, with an excessive amount of soy sauce added. Even the general Tso’s chicken seems to be overly salty. The veggie Lo mein used to be full of fresh vegetables, and my last order barely had semblance of any vegetables in it.

As a Middletown resident, relocated from the greater Waterbury area, I am in the search for some Chinese food in the area that is just as good as back in my hometown. Yesterday, after craving some sweet and sour chicken, I decided to try out Luen Hop. Since I don’t have a menu, I went there to order and wait for my food. Service can be somewhat better. When I ordered and was rung up when my food was ready, the people did not seem thrilled to serve me. While I was waiting for my food, four people came to pick up theirs. Two seemed to be regulars as they received friendly service and were greeted promptly, while the other two received the same service that I got. Okay then… Food-wise, I ordered the sweet and sour chicken combo(with pork fried rice and egg roll), fried wontons and white rice for the hubs. The food was ok, nothing spectacular. The fried rice was very bland but not greasy. Actually, the only good thing about the whole meal was that it was not greasy. That was it. Not sure if I would go back. The service received is making me question if I want to go back or not. The food, I could leave it or take it. Therefore I will continue with my search.

I had higher expectations from this place. I ordered chicken chow mein and General Tso’s chicken yesterday, both with pork fried rice. The General Tso’s was up to speed, it had the right amount of sweetness and crispiness that makes this dish unique. The rice, however, was tasteless. Almost as if there was no egg in it, or seasoning. The chicken chow mein was also rather bland. I asked for both dishes to be made extra spicy, and they weren’t spicy at all. That request seemed to fall on deaf ears. My total was a little over 15 dollars, and the cashier owed me about 5 cents but didn’t even give it to me. I didn’t fuss over that, but still, be a professional and give me my change. Most disturbingly was the fact that the man who was the cashier, who took my 15 dollars from me, then started preparing/handling the food. I’m not really a huge stickler about these things but this right here was a violation of Food Hygiene 101. The person handling the money should not handle the food, unless he washes his hands first. He did not such thing. This makes me worry about what they are doing when no one is looking. The final kicker was they have a sign saying that if you spend 15 dollars or more, you get 5 free wantons. He didn’t give them to me. When I asked him for them, he looked quite annoyed and gave me some major ‘tude. Once he gave them to me, I felt as if I owed him something for the trouble. Not coming back here again. Think I will stick with Wangs in the future.

This place has gone down hill, when I worked near by this was my weekly Chinese place, I would always get the house special duck and or and sometimes both the chicken and broccoli. Had it a few days ago terrible! I had the duck a chicken broccoli and chicken finger and a large pork fried rice. The rice was awful the pork inside tastes funny almost like a burnt oily Taste, the chicken fingers all spongy batter hardly any meat, worst of it all the the house duck it was 80 precent fried fat and skin a total of once pice had duck meat on it. Chicken and broccoli with mostly broccoli with a very thick sauce yuck. I really used to love this place.

Good, fresh food! The wonton wrappers on the wonton soup aren’t too thick. Boneless spare ribs are juicy and not over cooked along with any other meats they cook. Its never dry or greasy.

We stopped here on our way to Delaware and then when we came back and the food is outstanding!!! The first time we ordered Szechuan Chicken and it was delicious! Coming back we ordered a small Chicken with Mushrooms and it too was delicious and the portion almost seemed like a large one. The food and prices are fantastic. We ate both times in the restaurant. The service is very good and they are very friendly.

I was not aware by reading previous reviews that this is primarily a take out shop. There are 3 tables for dining in, but no table service and you have to eat your food in the take out containers with plastic utensils. We were quite dismayed that they refused to give us tap water. I do not buy bottled water on principle, and the only other options was soda. That being said, the food was OK, nothing special. I liked that the pieces of vegetables(broccoli, mushroom, onions, bok choy, carrots) in the vegetable lo mein were a good size. My husband ordered a dish that was designated«hot and spicy» and I would judge it as very mildly spicy — so if you like spicy food, be sure to ask them to adjust it to your taste.

Hands down… the best Chinese food ever. I always get the vegetable rolls and vegetable lo mein, both of which are delicious. I love that you get«freebies» when you spend a certain amount of money. The cheese wontons are to die for. Every Friday night is «Luen Hop and Movie Night» in our house. Any time we have«cheated» on Luen Hop — we immediately regret it. We actually joke that one of our criteria for purchasing a house is that it can’t be too far from Luen Hop. I only wish they delivered!

Some of the best Chinese I have ever had! I always get the sweet and sour chicken and I haven’t found a sweet and sour chicken as delicious yet!

This isn’t only the best Chinese you’ll find in Cromwell, it’s probably among the best Chinese food you’ll ever have, anywhere. While not a sit-in establishment, Luen Hop excels at making delicious Chinese food by hand; it’s not just shipped in by truck and re-heated. The pork-fried rice, the lo mein, the crispy chicken, the crab rangoon, the beef teriyaki, wanton soup, egg rolls, shrimp and broccoli, chicken fingers and chicken wings(need I go on?) are the best I’ve eaten at any Chinese eatery anywhere in the United States. That’s saying a lot for a Chinese food take-out place, but it certainly delivers on this promise. The people there are very nice, too. You can tell a family runs this business and cares about it. Their culinary skills are well plied and their ingredients are fresh. Sometimes it’s fun just coming in a little early to watch them make the food; they’re always busy for a reason. Highly recommended if you’re in the Cromwell area.

I’ve literally eaten here over 50 times. Always good. A step above the typical Chinese take-out joint

On my nighttime drive back from the Tri State area, I got off the highway in the Cromwell/Middletown area around 9:30PM, figuring it was time for a late dinner pitstop. There are plenty of chains in the area, but I decided to check out the Chinese takeout place in the shopping plaza in back of the 99 Restaurant, KFC and McDonald’s. Luen Hop is a typical looking strip plaza Chinese takeout restaurant with an open kitchen behind the counter and there are a few tables for eating in. I ordered the Combination 9: Roast Pork Lo Mein with Pork Fried Rice & Egg Roll($ 6.95 plus tax). The food was cooked to order in just under 10 minutes. The good amount of hot food tasted pretty good, especially after driving for about 2 hours on busy CT highways. The lo mein dish had a slightly sweet taste with plenty of tender roast pork and a few vegetables with soft noodles. The fried rice(yellow color) had roast pork cubes and fried onions with a firm texture. The egg roll was on the smaller side, but tasted very good and wrapper was not greasy, stuffed with a good balance of pork, cabbage, and seasonings for the filling. Overall, the Chinese food I had was solid good and tasty. I could not finish most of the dinner portion in one sitting(enough food for 2 people) and continued on my trek back to NH.

Tried this place on a whim as I was driving around looking for take out of some sort. I enjoy chinese food and since I was on business travel I thought I would give this place a try. Ordered the mongolian chicken, hot and sour soup and 2 pork egg rools for around $ 13. The egg rolls were good, but needed chili sauce. Maybe all egg rolls do and my standards for egg rolls are middle of the road. The hot and sour soup was just so-so and not spicey as the little chile suggested. More watery than I like, but filled with stuff. The mongolian chicken had way more yellow oninion then chicken and was just middle of the road. It was a bit sparse on variety of stuff but the quantity was huge. The entire meal could have easily fed two. I’ve had better and wouldn’t go back. Not that I won’t be in Cromwell again in the future, but I’m sure there are better chinese takeout restaurants than this one in the area. There have to be because if this is the best in town. .. I’m going up to Hartford.
