Work Out World

This is a fairly inexpensive, no frills gym with good staff, and what appears to be incompetent management. I haven’t had any issues, but I know of more than one person who has, and looking at the reviews here, this seems to be the norm.
High ceilings and an upper floor seems to give this gym a sense of roominess, but there’s really nothing special about any of the equipment or use of this space in this regard.
The Middletown WOW is smaller, with equipment crammed in there, but they seem to be a little more on top of it. I’m not saying their management is great, but the working staff does seem to be on top of things and care about the gym.
Bathrooms in both locations tend to be on the cold side, and the locker rooms/​rest rooms could be cleaned more often.
Wifi sucks in both locations. Basically dial-​up speed.

Gym is freezing cold in the morning. Now I’m not expecting it to be 80 degrees but when it’s now that it’s getting cold I’ve seen the thermostats hit 49 degrees. Like i said, I don’t expect it to be crazy hot but at least a temperature that is bearable to work out in. The wifi is also useless and your better off using your phone signal. Besides working out in what feels like a refrigerator and the wifi they do fix the equipment pretty fast when it breaks and the staff is really nice.

After being a member there for 6 years, I cannot recommend this place one bit. A year ago, I stopped in to update my credit card information to a new card. Little did I realize they just signed me up for a second membership on the new card, and double charged me monthly for 14 months. I realize that it’s my fault for not analyzing my CC statement every month to catch it earlier on, but the reason why I’m discouraged is the lengthy process it took me to get an almost $ 300 total back. After being bounced around through 4 different people, I finally got my money refunded AFTER 8 WEEKS of constantly calling them and me following up with the «manager».
When all said and done, I was offered no compensation for any of the aggravation, and i even reached out to «George», who is the operations manager, who just hides behind a computer, but never received a response back.
Working in advertising, and dealing with hundreds of businesses all over the state I will be certain to send everyone ANYWHERE ELSE and not WOW Fitness, not to mention that the place is disgusting and the machines are constantly broken.

I have been a member of wow fitness for close to 5 years now. Sometime in February, My bank sent me a new debit card because I shopped at Home Depot before the security breach and they were worried there was a risk, my card number could be compromised. Once I received this new debit card I immediately went to Wow fitness in Cromwell, CT and told them to change my debit card info for billing. I also specifically told the person at the front desk to make sure Twin Oaks (WOW Billing company) gets my billing info because I do not want to be charged a fee. At that time it was a little over 3 weeks before the next bill would go through.
Of Course after the next bill tried to go through, they charged it to the old card which was no longer valid. Twin Oaks sent me a fee and bill, I went back and forth calling twin oaks and Wow fitness in Cromwell. I told them I was not paying this fee because I gave them just about a month notice about the change in billing and it was not my fault they did not update the info in time. Finally the manager said they would wave the fee if I go down and pay the missed payment. I went there and paid the missed payment on June 1^st 2015. The managers only work during the day and I could only make it there after the manager was gone. So I even had the front desk guy leave a note for the manager to contact twin oaks and tell them to wave the fee.
Today 7÷16÷2015, I got a call from twin oaks saying the gym will still not wave the fee. When I called the gym, the manager still would not wave the fee, even though I told her I gave both WOW and Twin Oaks more than enough time to update the billing info.
At this point, I plan on canceling my membership because this is ridiculous how much of a hassle this has been. Some of my family and a couple of my friends plan on canceling as well due to similar issues. I still can’t believe after being a member for 5 years this is how you treat a loyal member.

While the staff here are very friendly, this gym desperately needs to be updated. The wallpaper looks like my grandma’s house, the only music you hear (hardly) are classic rock songs or just 80’s music that make me feel like I’m grocery shopping, and there are always a few broken machines. there is nothing that makes me feel excited about working out here. Not to mention their hours could be better. I work until after 10 pm and they close at 11, I like to workout after getting out of work and by the time I get there they’re about to close. If it wasn’t the closest gym to my house I would go somewhere else.

I am happy with the gym overall. The areas where I am negative about are Wifi and cleanliness. The Wifi is pretty much useless. I am better off trying to connect to my apps with my standard cell signal. Cleanliness is not too bad. It is time to get rid of the carpet on the main floor. The mens room occasionally smells like the bottom of a monkey cage.

I find it incredibly rude and unprofessional the way they walk around 15 mins before closing to shut all the fans and TVs off. I pay the same membership fee as everyone else and the posted hours are until 11:00pm, if you are going to start closing down at 10:45 then post that. I work a late shift and can’t get there until 10:15. Please don’t rob me of that extra 15 mins to work out in comfort. It literally takes 1 minute (I timed your staff multiple times) to shut off TVs and the fans. Invest in the 1 minute of overtime and shut down the time you advertise.

Nothing special, nothing fancy. There is almost always a machine available but many of them are out of service. Plenty of parking. The whole place feels kind of dirty and the spray bottles they have to clean with seem like a mixture of 95% water and only 5% some type of cleaning product. Customer service is terrible. The WORST part is trying to cancel your membership, they make you jump through hoops and go through all kinds of hassle no matter what the reason. The only reason I stayed a member so long is that my company was paying for it. There are MUCH better gyms around the area.

We moved out of state and didn’t cancel our membership beforehand. In order to cancel your membership if you’re not there in person, they force you to send a letter via certified mail, and once they receive the letter it takes them a month to «process» it. What a load of crap. There’s absolutely no reason why they shouldn’t cancel your membership over the phone. It’s a totally transparent way to squeeze a couple more months of membership fees out of you. I spoke to several employees and tried to get them to cancel my membership over the phone, and no one would help me, yet no one could give me a legitimate reason why they needed a letter via certified mail. Way to treat your customers like garbage WOW Fitness.

Love this gym! It’s only $ 10/​month, they have tons of equipment, and the employees are genuinely friendly. It’s right off the highway, so it’s really easy to stop by after work, too. It’s not the most high-​tech gym I’ve belonged to, but they have TVs above the equipment and play XM radio (at night they even put on indie stations). I only wish they were open later on Saturdays and Sundays, but membership here is still an incredible value.

Can’t beat the price. I rarely have a problem finding an open machine that I need. Seems clean enough for me. They have a protein shake bar, but I have never seen a single person get one. Maybe in the morning for breakfast? Wish this place had a rowing machine. Overall I think it’s nicer than the Middletown location.

So, I just thought I’d share this for public consumption. Read into it as you see fit…
In the middle of a circuit featuring some push presses (pushing weight from shoulder to overhead) in the squat rack, my attention was diverted (with 135lbs overhead no less) to a gentleman who had just thrown his headphones at me from the 2^nd floor. As he seemed very insistent to gain my attention, I put the weight back, pulled the earbuds out of my ears and was then scolded by this gentleman (whom now I’m assuming was the owner or sr. manager) for using chalk on the barbell I was using. I should probably mention that this individual never once introduced himself to me or let me know who who he was or who he represented.
I acknowledged his request, stopped my workout and noted that I had not seen any signs prohibiting the use of chalk and would stop doing so immediately. As I went to get towels and cleaning supplies, the gentleman demanded that I leave the premises immediately to place the chalk out of the building. I asked if I could put in my locker («no» was the response), I asked if I could put it down so I could clean the equipment («no» was the response) again. In fact, he then made me follow him to the front desk to find my membership information (for what reason he never shared) and then told me (again) to get the chalk out of the gym. At the front desk, he made his associate pull up my membership and made some form of notation on the computer.
After I removed the chalk, I came in to convey my sincere apologies for the misunderstanding of his chalk rules and he physically turned away and refused to acknowledge me. I then realized that this gentleman was clearly not in the customer service business and went back to the squat rack to clean up the bars and floor. I diligently did as I told him I would and as I was finished and walking to the showers, he returned to the area with another WOW employee. Again, he ignored me completely and walked by me in disgust.
Not 1, not 2, but 5 gym members approached me in the bathroom and on the gym floor upon my exit to share their disgust for what they had witnessed. This was, by far, the worst interaction I have ever had with a service professional – Should you have any other option in joining a gym, I strongly advise you to to do so as this operation (or at least its leadership) is a complete joke
On the positive side, the desk manager did apologize for the occurrence.

The gym is cheap and you never have to wait for a machine. 9 times out of 10 the machines are negative. You cannot plue head phones into TV. When you tell the person that the machine is not working they laugh and say how do you know. Then all of a sudden there is a sign that says the machine is broken. The last thing is please keep it clean. Its gross If you don’t get done when it firsts opens then good luck and go get a shot.

Kinda dark and dirty… feels like you’re working out in a warehouse. TV’s are ancient. Cardio Express in Rocky Hill seemed like it was a bit nicer for the same price, and LA Fitness seems to be the best in the area (but it’s a little more expensive). I guess if you don’t care that your gym is depressing (haha), then this place is for you.

Usually plenty of parking. Gets crowded after work. Cheap gym but machines are usually in working order. It’s a large building and the staff is nice. I wish they would fix some of the broken lockers in the women’s locker room. Overall good value for $ 10 per month.

For the price they give it, it’s unbeatable. If you are looking for the regular workout needs– treadmills, free weights, machines etc, this one has all.
