I’ve been a fan of 500X for a very long time. Why? Because it is one of the few places that allows for people to be working artists. I first checked out this studio back in 2001, while attending UNT. I worked in the Art Department and went to see several friends’ work on opening night. I was blown away with the immediate sense of community, the connections that were available, but even better, the ability for a non-artist like myself to be able to engage and also purchase art without having to be independently wealthy. The art here is not limited by dealer restrictions and I love that I can chat with the artist that I am buying from. Even better, the members of 500X not only have personal stake in the running of the gallery(it is part of your duties as a member), but their work is also featured in the monthly gallery, and they have the ability to have a 2 – 3 person show in the main gallery once a year. There are also calls for exhibits open to the public. So yeah, what can I say? I love this gallery. It is a great place continually full of budding potential. I also like that I actually have a place where I can buy groundbreaking work and will not have to ever be regulated to one of those awful starving artists sales where you can only buy cheap prints, stale still lives, or terrible Lautrec knockoffs.

Very cool place. I have shown work here at three different exhibitions. Old building with lots of character, often with good work in it. Check out Jonathan Snow’s sculptural works. Not much parking though. But its in deep ellum so cool place to stop in when they are open. Also cool place to go at openings. They usually have free drinks.

I’m really happy that this place is here. And once when the new location was under construction, I peeped my head in, and was happy with the art I saw them installing. However on my recent formal visit, I was not totally happy with the downstairs showcase, and the upstairs art, was beyond unsatisfactory. I was shocked when myy friend told me that the art here could be amateurish, but he was correct. This is a cool space, and I encourage their existence.

Been here once with a friend of mine whose paintings were featured… and sold. This place is just cool. It is an «anything-goes» art gallery featuring the work(s) of local artists, Texan artists and the work of «guests» who are national and international. But mostly up and coming Dallas artists. From $ 150 to $ 1200, you may be able to find your faux-Pollack or Basquiat(if you will) to hang on your wall(if you are so inclined.) Or just come here to look at the work of some VERY talented artists local to you. Not high art, not low art, I feel that 500X simply defies any category or labeling. It’s just cool and pretty social. It is located in an oddball part of downtown that is either Deep Ellum or Fair Park or the unnamed crevice in between the two. There is no cost for parking around the building or in the vicinity, just be wary and pay attention to any no parking or tow signs. Otherwise, park where you can(no difficulties that I encountered.) Bring cash. This gallery has a ‘limited’ selection of beer and wine(mostly wine) and they tend to run out later in the evening as it is not a «bar.» I would describe it as bohemian at it’s most debonair, but built upon the most solid foundation that has apparently been here in Dallas for 30 years to date(the building it is located in has been around since 1916.) If you want to go out on the weekend and do something VERY different and meet VERY different people, go here, you’ll probably end up enjoying yourself. And if you like art, or you’re a patron of art, buy a painting and support the local art scene. There’s some good stuff in there. Enjoy.
