I drove up to the gate, buzzed for entry, and waited for someone to answer my call to action. After a while a dried up old woman came out and squinted at me, taking my measure for a full minute at least. Finally she was in some manner satisfied, and decided to allow me admittance. «Good morning!» I said, «I need a garage 8′ tall and 16′ long. Do you have any?»
Her answer was a grunted «Yeah.»
“What you gonna keep in it?“
Her powdery face peered up at me like some red rouged gollum, expectant. The sun glinted off of the beads on her spectacle keepers and reflected as shiny golden freckles on her cheek.
«An antique milk truck.»
Her glance grew steely.
«No cars. The owner told me no cars.»
We had been sitting down for the traditional self storage golf cart ride to see the unit available, but she leapt up like the cart was afire. «No cars.»
«May I speak to the owner?»
«We don’t do business that way» she sputtered at me «we just don’t»
«So I can’t even have the owner’s name? When is he here?»
«Never. We don’t do business that way.»
And that was all I could get out of her.
