Filthy, disgusting, store, run by rude, nasty people. I can’t believe people actually eat food made in this toilet!

Phillip B’s review inspired me to try this place. I had seen it before, but don’t know that I would have ever gone in. Several of us Unilocalers went here this past Friday. I was the first one in and ordered a cup of the strawberry cheesecake ice cream. It was delicious. Creamy and there were pieces of cheesecake in it. Reminded me a lot of the blizzard at Dairy Queen, if they still have that same flavor, it’s been a minute… This store seemed to have a little bit of everything from tacos to stuffed animals to cologne. They have a few tables and chairs so you can sit and eat and watch the TV they have hanging in the corner. This could easily be a one stop shop, and I plan on coming back for more ice cream.

La Chupacabra, the mythical creature of Mexican lore. Everyone in their life claims to have seen a chupacabra and I can add myself to that list. Not because I saw a real chupacabra but because I ventured to Chupacabra after a UYE around the corner. While I had plans to get ice cream, I saw that they have shaved ice as well. The tamarindo flavor was wonderful! As far as ambiance goes, this store is a jack of all trades. They sell ice cream, snow cones, tortas, tacos, phone cards, you name it. The employees are nice and willing to help plus there is a huge TV that shows telenovelas, if that’s your thing. The UYE group and I found ourselves engrossed in a novela and it was awesome. Between the name and the varied offerings this store has, I must say that this is the coolest Chupacabra I’ve ever seen.

Why only two reviews? This place definitely is a dive. What’s the problemo? A dive is expected to be grungy and trashy looking. That’s why we call places like this a dive. They don’t disappoint being a dive, but, they do hold a couple of secrets. Not only do they sell convenience items, they also grill up some tacos and such. The best secret about this place is they have ice cream! They make milk shakes and fruit drinks also. I can’t believe they aren’t getting any Unilocaling love. I had no problem communicating with anyone. Everybody was friendly. I didn’t fear for my safety, nor, I did not feel like I needed to charge my shank.

This place is pretty authentic and a definite dive. Place was pretty sketchy and felt like I was in Mexico for sure. All I wanted was a shaved ice and they delivered! Will definitely be going back, just during daylight hours! They take credit cards too!

Let me be clear here: This is a total dive. Most of you will feel deeply uncomfortable going here. Also, there’s nothing too amazing about this place. However, we’re not talking Michelin stars here with our Unilocal reviews, no matter how well we think of ourselves. No, I’m giving it five stars because it delivers on its promise. It’s basically a corner store. It sells ice cream and snow cones. I’d pass on the ice cream as there are great places to go for that. However, it can be a challenge finding a snow cone. This place is always available and has plenty of flavors. The ice is perfectly shaved and the texture is great. They don’t skimp on the sugar water, either. Also, they have aguas frescas like melon, horchata and hibiscus tea. That’s worth the price of admission. I also look forward to trying some fairly authentic mexican food there; tacos and tortas(sandwiches). Downside: like I said, it’s a dive. There will be people there that don’t speak English. Some of them may or may not look intimidating to you. It’s not clean looking. It’s kind of scuzzy. That said, there’s a lot worse in the world that still delivers on good food. Personally, I’ve had street food in India and been great. Then again, there was a moment where I thought I might end up drugged and kidnapped because I didn’t know where my coffee came from. My trust was rewarded. Frankly, I walked into Cupacabra so how much danger could I be in. =p
