My husband and I stopped in Honey Dee’s around 10 pm last night to see what«water ice» is all about. Two of the owners were manning the counter and quite generously offered sample after sample so that we could make an informed decision. «Water ice» isn’t shaved ice, nor is it the sort of hard-packed Italian ice like those Lemon Chill’s we used to buy at Six Flags. Instead, «water ice» is very fine, delicate ice almost like a slushy but less watery — you eat it with a spoon instead of drinking it. It’s quite refreshing, and we were told it’s also low-calorie and dairy-free, which is great for those of us who are lactose intolerant. Apparently«water ice» is all the rage in Philadelphia, where two of Honey Dee’s owners are from. We were both sold on a sample of the piña colada flavor, which tastes like the best, freshest piña colada just without the alcohol. You can combine as many flavors as you’d like, so I got the piña colada with black cherry, while my husband combined piña colada with sour apple. I also sampled some of their ice cream — the fig flavor was really delicious and had real fig seeds. They make the«water ice» in-house but purchase the ice cream from a local creamery in Plano. If you’re big on texture, be sure to ask which flavors may have been freshly made, as those seem to have the smoothest texture, although all of the flavors we sampled were quite nice.
