I MISSEDCANDY??? What the hell??! Dang it! I knew I should have stayed on my skates for longer than an hour, but dayyum… my legs aren’t as graceful on skates as they were when I was 5! However, I was glad to bust out my inline skates I got for Christmas last year for the second time and smooth out my moves in the rink. We were definitely the«in-between» crowd there. Lots of kiddos were there because two birthday parties were going on, and with them came the parents. A few brave souls strapped on skates and tried to show their kids how it’s done, but they weren’t doing a very good job! Between avoiding falling kids, stumbling parents and skating to the beat of the music, a fun time was had by all. Even the employees had smiles on their faces! And for $ 5.50, I think I’ll have to come back with BF so we can hold hands and let our inner-child out.

I think my new favorite workout on the weekend has to be roller skating! Thanks to Rachael’s UYE planning I got to make an excuse to go back to White Rock Skate Center for the second time in a month. This place is the BOMBDIGGITY people… retro décor, retro tunes(mixed in with new tunes as well), retro skates(and new roller blades), retro snack bar. Love it. The place is filled with little brats. errrm kiddos… during the day as expected. At least this time they were all in Halloween costumes. It helped me remember which kiddos couldn’t skate and kept falling right in front of me(Yeah — avoid the kids in Star Wars costumes!!). They also did the limbo! I was pumped to see these kids do the splits on the skates… amazing. It is actually surprising how well behaved the kids are at the roller skating rink — I guess they’ve expended too much energy skating to be super annoying? Speaking of expending energy… skating is a pretty good workout! You will be sweating by the time you get around the rink a few times. BUT you won’t care because it is fun and OHYEAH they are playing my JAM! Special shout out to the DJ for playing some freakin Journey while I was there! Oh and the hand holding that Flor mentioned… thankfully it looked like we were just wanting to have an all day couple skate and not what it really was: he had to hold my hand so I wouldn’t fall down! I finally skated without him though and I think next time I will definitely be ready for the limbo. hahaha Best part was the cool Unilocalers… of course Rachael, but also Flor and Kristie and Kane and Nikki B. Fun fun!

Sure, the skate center doesn’t look like much from the outside, but it had quite a bit of fun tucked away behind its doors. It was early on Halloween, so I expected some kiddos to be around. In fact, there were several birthday parties that day, so we were vastly outnumbered on the skate floor. Of course, most of them couldn’t stand on their skates for more than a few minutes at a time. It was like an obstacle course trying to avoid smushing them as they sprawled across the rink. But they were cute & seemed to be having a blast, so it didn’t take away from the fun :) After watching the races and the limbo contest(how do those kids bend that way?!), and a few hours of rolling myself in an endless cirlce, we all cried ‘mercy’ and called it a day. Thanks to Kristie A. for handing out Halloween themed Pez *nom nom nom* Perfect treat to end the skating fiasco. Kane & I need to figure out how to skate backwards at some point — It was slightly embarrassing having to use the wall to propel myself off only to come to a hault a few feet later… Next time, I’m springing for my own skates. The rentals were fine, but getting a little old & you could tell they needed some TLC. Oh, and don’t count on the snack bar to provide anything but the standard choices of pizza and hot dogs. I smuggled in a snack in my purse, so just be sneaky :) Parents, hide your kiddos because I’ll definitely be back to try skating again!

What an excellent way to kick off Halloween, the one holiday where you can get in touch with your inner child with abandon and no one is supposed to judge you. And at a very inexpensive price at that. After trying on two different roller blade pairs that they do warn you tend to run large, I was ready to get on the rink. I had a great time trying to get my blading legs although I don’t think I ever figured out how to stop. It was still so much fun and a pretty good work out for me at least. I was happy to see people turn out for such an awesome, non-eating event. We should do it more often. I’m ready to go back; I still need to learn another way to stop besides bracing myself against the wall. Let’s make it a monthly thing! I just have to say Nickie & Maverick were definitely the cutest thing on the rink… so sweet, you guys, with the hand holding! :) Thanks for bringing the Halloween candy, Kristie! Pez Rocks! And thanks for setting this up Rachael, what a wonderful idea! Love that Unilocalers are not afraid to sweat!

I knew I was going to be a little, er okay a lot, rusty at roller-skating since I haven’t been on wheels in years. It took me a good twenty laps around the rink to finally kinda get my groove on. There were two kid’s birthday parties going on, so there were brats(to quote Nickie… teehee) everywhere. They were cute in their Halloween costumes. Watching them fall down was hysterical. The kids were sometimes an obstacle on the rink, and there were a few near misses of me rolling over some of them. They all managed to escape death by skates, though. So about an hour and a half later my feet are were killing me, there are muscles in my legs that I forgot about that are stinging right now and I sweated more than I care to admit. But it was so much fun. For $ 5 I feel like I got a semi-work out in, and had a blast doing it. Thank you Rachel for putting this UYE together. Hope to do it again soon.
