Driving along 44 after a short meeting and decided to stop in for breakfast and tour the Houma House after a wonderful kick off meal. The famous biscuits served with pecan butter and dig preserves could easily replace my normal morning routine of donuts, bagels, croissant or toast. Not one to usually eat fig preserves, it is now a new favorite. I ordered the omelette which was served with fresh tomatoes and a couple pieces of bacon. Would like to have had more bacon, or a thicker cut, however for the minimal investment for the total meal and the wonderful ambiance of the dining area, and getting full from the biscuits, I was lucky to be able to eat most of the meal. The settings on the table were delightful antiquities and custom estate plates and hand crafted coffee cups. Only one server and had to wait a while to be seated, as the server was in kitchen preparing tray for other tables, should be some type of notification system installed or a seat yourself sign for individuals coming in for breakfast, I was not the only one who had to wait or be reseated when the waitstaff realized we were present. Would have 5 stars if seating had been prompt and service a little more professional,(even the greeting was forced as if I was inconveniencing the server) 4 stars considering the historic and fantastic venue. Great food! Beautiful environment, great price!

The food at this restaurant was mediocre at best. At its worst, the food is inedible. When several members of my large party were served pork that was very undercooked, the chef came into the dining room and confronted members of my party. After a long discussion, the chef finally agreed to remove the affected entrees from our bills. He never offered to cook the food longer. When the bill came, only one of the entrees had been removed even though there were several undercooked pork dishes on the group’s check. When we inquired about this, the chef returned to the dining room and had a loud argument with a member of our party. In addition, the entrees that were safe to eat were flavorless and uninspired. I am thoroughly unimpressed.

I really hate to give a 1 star review to anyone, but unfortunately I’ve been eating here for years and my last experience insured I’ll not be going back. For years my bf and I have brought our family in for the holidays and been excited to drive slightly out of town for a celebratory dinner. Unfortunately, the change in executive chef and menu were not the only two issues. I’ll start with the menu change. This restaurant is now Prix Fixe only and there are options for 7 courses or 9. I don’t always mind this but I also don’t think this makes restaurant successful in the long term(RIP Stella!). Our waiter told us that the owner always wanted Prix Fixe but Langlois wouldn’t go for it. I also felt the drag in service between getting a drink and getting food. Our waiter had 5 tables and no help that I could see, which resulted in long waits for drinks and food. There were some dishes missing from the choices that made me a little sad(duck confit and Abita shrimp & grits for example). We were told we could choose from either menu with the 7 course, which meant there were two more options… whoo hoo! The amuse was actually the best item we ate all night. A nicely cooked duck breast over sweet potato hash… yum! As for our dinner, we started with pork belly and it sounded very promising. Once it was delivered, I almost squealed with excitement as the texture was perfect! Then I put it in my mouth… cold pork fat! The lack of reheating of these beautiful morsels makes me sad even as I write this. *tears* Moving onto the soup, turtle soup to be exact. This soup was more the consistence of a gravy but really had some great flavor. In hindsight, I should’ve just asked for rice and more soup. Then we had some okay house salads and the ever present sorbet with vodka(never a bad idea). This is where things really head south. For our entrees, I ordered the tuna topped with soft shell crawfish and my bf ordered the triple tail. First glance, we were both ready to dig in! But when we did… my bf came up with a mouth full of bones and my tuna was ready for a can. The tuna was so over cooked that I didn’t eat it and that is saying a lot. The soft shell crawfish was okay but could’ve used some seasoning. Neither of us ate our entrée and then the chef came by to ask how everything was… we didn’t complain too much but also told him we wouldn’t be back. He didn’t seem to mind. I wish it was over here but nope, got to eat dessert. The bf ordered some chocolate mousse dish and I thought I’d be safe with a seasonal fruit(green apple) tart. This tart was stuck to my teeth longer than a Now & Later from 1984. I took one bite and asked for the check. I’m sorry but these things are unacceptable at this price point. We’re hoping they get these things fixed sooner rather than later but I’ll have to watch Unilocal!for updates before I make that drive again.

The Houmas House is simply enchanting! The grounds are breathtaking and the service across the board is outstanding — from the woman in the gift shop who took our day-of reservation over the phone to the exceedingly talented gentlemen bartenders at the Turtle Bar to the waiter we enjoyed at Latil’s for our excellent meal and dessert! We will definitely be recommending this extraordinary culinary, mixology and aesthetic adventure to everyone we know who’s planning a trip to New Orleans — definitely worth the drive out if you’re staying in the French Quarter like we are. Turtle Bar: John and Derek are amazing — extensive and rare alcohol selections with expert, unbelievable mixologists who routinely come up with mind blowing creations… Latil’s: BBQ shrimp appetizer, Houmas House Salad with locally sourced blue cheese(phenomenal), cranberry sorbet apéritif with Grey Goose topper, filet mignon with fingerling potatoes and Red Fish with ratatouille and local fresh veggies, finished with mint julep crème brûlée — stunning presentation and exquisite flavors!

Took my fiancé for Valentine’s Day and had a fantastic experience. It was her first time there, so a staff member brought us around the grounds in a golf cart, giving a nice view of the many fountains. We arrived early for drinks at the turtle bar, where we both enjoyed an excellent old fashioned. The only thing missing was the cherry. Regardless, it was one of the better ones I’ve had. Since it was Valentine’s Day, we a walk around the fountains, where a staff member even offered to take a picture for us. We had an 8:30 reservation but were not seated until almost 9. It was no big deal, as we had nowhere else to be. The Valentine’s menu was smaller than the normal menu, but still had plenty of excellent options. The meal was $ 100 a person and included a full five courses. Appetizer — She had the mango crab cake and I ordered the pumpkin, crawfish and corn bisque. The bisque is one of my favorite menu items and did not disappoint. The crab cake was very good as well. Salad — very fresh greens and an amazing house dressing. It was sweet, yet, not over-powering In between the salad and the main course was a cosmopolitan sorbet. It came in a nice cocktail glass(see gallery) dipped in Mardi Gras colors. The waitress then poured orange Gray Goose Vodka into the sorbet, where you then mash it all down with a spoon. A wonderful combination and very refreshing surprise, for first time visitors. Main Course — I ordered the grouper crusted in zapps potato chips, which was served with jambalaya grits. She ordered the seafood crêpe with fried soft shell crab. Both dishes were amazing. As a Louisiana native, I loved the incorporation of Zapps potato chips to the grouper. Usually, I’m not a fan of grits but these has bits of andouille mashed up in them which gave it a nice southern flair. I really enjoyed that unique twist. Dessert — We split the bread pudding and cheese cake. By this time, I was so full, that I barely remember the desserts. I know she loves her cheese cake. The part I do remember was the chocolate covered strawberry. It may have been the best I’ve ever had. If you want a quick meal, this is not the place for you. If you’re looking for somewhere to bring your significant other for a romantic evening, then Houmas House is your place.

Wow. So fun to eat inside the back of the main house in houmas house. Lobster with risotto was fantastic. Definitely a fine dining experience.

This place has changed. Years ago the owner said he wanted to create Disney World in S. Louisiana. He has gotten there. We returned after moving from LA three years ago. In fact, Latil’s was my last meal in LA when we left. The return was not good. First on my list of disappointments was that they were not serving the tasting menu, stating that the restaurant was«too busy». This was after we called the day before to confirm. You see, this was a present to some folks, and the tasting menu was what we wanted to give — thus the confirmation. Then, the waitress had a cold… a bad cold. She coughed and sneezed all over the place. The crab cake was cold in the middle. The bread pudding was scalding in the middle(microwave) and the filet that my wife had was grainy and overdone. We asked for a desert wine at the end. It never came, which is ok in that the lady was pretty darn sick and we were done with the whole experience. We used to have such great food and service. Such a shame. The grounds look better than ever. On another note, the tour was great, until the tour guide, after asking for tips and leaving business cards was harangued by a manager for doing so. Pretty weird to hear him curse and throw her cards in the trash. Wow.

I had one of the best experiences dining at this place. The service food and ambiance was incredible. The chef talked to us about our meal and he did an excellent job. I dont have much to say to describe how awesome this was… experience a dinner here for yourself… you will be happy you did.

I came for brunch with a party of 7 and absolutely loved the experience. The food was exceptional and the service was very nice. I would definitely recommend a brunch here. The best part is walking around the gardens afterwards. Here’s the rundown: *Bloody Marys are delish, with a little bit of spice to them. Brandy Milk Punch, not so much. They didn’t know how to make it. Stick to the basics! *Their bread basket includes dragonfly shaped mimosa biscuits(awesome!) and they serve the bread with 3 kinds of butter. The pecan spice one was divine. *Their prices are very good for the quality of the food you get. Put it this way, we went to another Cajun restaurant and for 30% more we got less food and mediocre quality. Latil’s definitely impressed! *Crab Mango Cake Salad — this was very good. A generous crabcake on top of a chipotle remoulade with a side salad and fresh tomatoes. *Gulf Fish — it was the drum with a very generous amount of lump crab meat on top. Tasty! *Grits & Grillades — made with veal, and a very nice presentation. Looked fabulous and I didn’t hear any complaints. The only thing is that there are no signs directing you here once you arrive on the grounds of Houmas House. I would definitely recommend some wayfinding signs so the older guests don’t have to walk around in circles like my grandma had to do!

Fantastic food and service. The oysters rocked, steak cooked to perfection, and the drum couldn’t have been more beautifully done! The deserts are to die for… especially the chocolate!!!

Went here for my birthday several months ago and I was extremely disappointed with the service. I have always highly recommended this restaurant to friends and family, but this visit made me think twice. During this visit, our server completely neglected us. We didn’t get a single water refill during the entire visit nor were we asked if we wanted another round of cocktails. She was busy catering to her other two tables, checking on them and chatting them up while ignoring us. The few attempts we made to flag her down went unnoticed because she would sail pass our table. Granted, we looked a lot younger than the other patrons in the dining room so perhaps she felt that we would not have tipped her as well. However, I have been in the service industry for about 10 years now and know how to tip accordingly. The server’s blatant indifference put a damper on my birthday festivities.

We ate at Café Burnside for lunch(it is called Latil’s Landing for the more upscale dinner service I guess?) after taking a weekday tour of the Houmas house and gardens because it is there on the grounds. The menu is relatively well rounded for its size and for a restaurant serving a tlimited clientele(Houmas House tourists and a few locals). Service was good, if a little scattered and unorganized – the poor Swiss tourists seated by us were completely forgotten about for 15 minutes after getting their menus. Every table gets a basket of bread and sweet pecan butter. They did offer daily specials during our vist, but we ordered the burger and the catfish to split. The burger comes with basically every topping you could want(cheese, lettuce, tomato, grilled onions, bacon, mayo) and great fries. It was well cooked and tasted good, not to mention it seemed to be pretty popular throughout the restaurant. The catfish had a delicious cornmeal batter and the crawfish étouffée was decent, but the rice it was served over was a little weird for the style of the dish(curry powder or turmeric flavor to it… hmmm) and the asparagus side was pretty flavorless – not even garlic or butter. Many around us ordered dessert and I noticed the shrimp po-boy was absolutely stuffed, which kind of made me jealous so you might try it out. Overall, if you are in the area or touring the Houmas House then this is a perfect place to stop. It is not an overwhelmingly delicious restaurant, but it definitely is good and will please most anyone in your crowd.

Awesome gumbo, the best I had after trying it in several other places in New Orleans. The staff were cold and snippy except for the guy that brought us bread 10 minutes AFTER the gumbo was served. It’s a nice place but the server and other staff showed no southern hospitality at all. I loved how our server became super friendly as we were about to leave. Just another example of going for a higher tip for the price of being completely phony.

Burnside Café, as they call the outside Restaurant that is not in the Mansion, serves the same food. The food was fantastic! The best I have had in a long time. The gardens are breathtaking. This is a beautiful place even in February when everything is dead. Can’t wait to see it in the Spring. Plan on taking my mother there for the tour and to eat at the restaurant.

After a fantastic tour of the Houmas mansion and grounds, we were lucky enough to enjoy a lunch at Latil’s Landing. The staff was a bit curt, but that didn’t stop us from enjoying the great views of the gardens and friendly diners. I ordered a Smoked Salmon Salad which looked like it had an entire fish on it and was very refreshing and lite. I was surprised to find heirloom tomatoes on the salad and coming from CA, am skeptical of heirlooms anywhere else. They were great! My mom had a HUGE bowl of gumbo which was full of fish and andouille. My friend had a ham and brie sandwich and her mom had a shrimp po’boy(which was overflowing with crispy shrimp, so much so that they were almost falling off the plate). Now a meal like this in a location like this sounds like it would be expensive… not at all! My salad was $ 14, the sandwich $ 12. It’s a steal for all the food you get.
