This new place is great for comfort, good alcoholic drinks, and fabulous food. The first thing you will see besides Brandy, the excellent bartender/server who’s been there from day one is a plush comfy sofa on your left with sofa chairs. The perfect place for you and your friends to chill out and drink or eat. The service is always good, because they sometimes have three servers on duty. Derrick is the Manager who know’s all about wines as well a food. Then Chip and Brandy. I just came across a bottle of Château Cantenac St. Emilion wine for approx.$ 55. at another place. R Bar has the same bottle for $ 44! They make a fabulous Cheese Plate with 4 types of Cheese, sausages, grapes, and important Jams from Switzerland, Scotland and England. You won’t believe the price $ 6.00! You can get a cheese platter for two which is, I think, $ 12. This is certainly the very best upscale bar and food place in the Quad Cities(cheese plate prepared there) the food which at the present time is provided by the Gourmet restaurant Café Indigo right across the way– a stone’s throw away.

We met another couple here at 5:30 on a Thursday night. It wasn’t busy at that time of the evening,(the few patrons who were there were at the bar), so we picked a table for six that had a good view of the door. As the evening wore on, the place filled up to the point that all the tables were full. First of all, let me say that they have no food at the R Bar. Keep that in mind. Kevin(the owner) stopped at our table during our visit and talked to us at length.(BTW, Kevin is the face of Moe in the 3 Stooges poster above the toilet in the men’s room — I HAD to share). Sorry ladies, no Kevin in your throne room. He said that they have an arrangement with Café Indigo,(across the parking lot), for food. They(someone at the bar or someone from the restaurant) will pick up anything you order from there and bring it to your table. Kevin also said(when asked specifically by my wife) that sometimes people bring in their own food. He said this about groups that use the back room area(to be explained later). In other words, R Bar is a after work non-happy-hour kind of place. R Bar has a smallish back room«party» area(ala Biaggis) where you can have a private party. A dozen people might fit, but it would be a bit tight. It is separated from the main bar area by a wall that has a lot of windows, so it is «sonically» separate but not«visually». They appreciate advance notice but if there isn’t a group using it, I imagine you could go back there. They will also close the whole place for private parties(but probably not on the weekends). Kevin(the owner) said that they DO have an employee in that room at all times when there is group present, to answer questions(and keep people from walking off with a bottle or two). They have bottled beer only — no draft– and then they have the«usual» flavorless domestics as well as one or two«beer-flavored beers». R Bar caters to wine drinkers who know what they want. There is a sommelier on the job at all times, according to Kevin. Three out of four of us in our party felt like having beer tonight, so I didn’t pay attention to which wines they had. There was no «menu» for the wines(that I could see). I guess you just trust the person who waits on you to bring you what you would like. Face it, most people who go to a wine bar like this know what they want or are open to try something the sommelier suggests. It still seemed odd to me that there wasn’t a «menu» that had prices on it. The seats are comfortable and substantial feeling. These aren’t your everyday chairs. Same can be said about the tables. Very solid feeling. R Bar is not trying to be your normal tavern/bar. The décor is upscale(as were the patrons I saw). Some of the guys were in sport coats and many of the ladies were decked out in their holiday finery(glittery sweaters galore). They basically don’t want to encourage the«two buck Chuck» crowd that only want to come sip wine coolers or cheap box wines. That means their prices probably aren’t cheap(beers were reasonable, however, $ 5 for my «hoppy» ale). After all of this, my only concerns were: 1) «one-holer» bathrooms for both men and women 2) service was very slow The bathroom thing isn’t THAT big of a problem — as long as you’re a guy. It would probably be a bigger nuisance for the ladies, ‘cuz there seems to be more going on inside the ladies room; just saying’. Also, it IS a bar and bars tend to induce micturition in people. I can see how, during busier times, people might be pissed(pun intended) at having to wait to «lift a leg» or «pop a squat». The service thing was a bit more bothersome. We weren’t acknowledged — at all — when we entered the place, even though there were only a handful of people there. I left for a minute to get something out of the car and when I got back, my wife said nobody had acknowledged her while I was gone. I got the impression we could have walked out then and not been missed. The problem seemed to be that, when we first got there, the bartender/sommelier was the only one waiting on people and he was busy making mixed drinks. The owner, Kevin, was there, but he kept talking to someone at the bar while we waited, un-acknowledged. Tch, tch Kevin. As the place grew busier, Kevin pitched-in and a young lady started helping out as well. He also came over to talk to us, later. I think that many fine wine drinkers would be okay with a «glacial» approach to time management in a place like the R Bar. When you’re sipping wine from a 750ml bottle, and aren’t waiting for dinner, you can probably be on «Glacial Nightlight Time» with no problem. When you’re drinking beer, though; that requires more immediate attention to keep the potables coming. All in all, I would go back to R Bar for drinks before dinner, but probably not otherwise. I hope Kevin considers putting on more help(or pitching-in more quickly when needed).

I made my first visit to the R bar a few nights ago, I plan to make many more trips there. Beautiful atmosphere, staff was friendly and very attentive. Amazing wine selection. Can not wait to bring my friends for a girls night and sit in the luxurious-looking soft seating they have. Would definitely recommend to anyone I know to go visit the R Bar!
