I tried the tree hugger without the broccoli, and it was surprisingly good, considering the usual lackluster veggie options that one finds. My boyfriend had the hellbender chicken bowl, and it was really really yummy. Also tried the hot salmon dip. Not a fan. Spinach balls were great though, and so was the lemonade. Craving for more as I finish the review.

Great burritos and beer, reasonably priced and friendly. A welcoming hole in the wall with a great variety of burrito recipes. Good for families too. Don’t miss it!

3 important points up-front: Bathrooms are consistently clean. This is always a key indicator of overall kitchen and restaurant cleanliness to me. The kitchen looks orderly and clean. This place is VERY busy and it’s obviously hectic for the staff yet they are overwhelmingly polite and helpful. That said … Beer selection is excellent, both tap and bottle, and it’s all fresh. Food is pretty OK. I assess this to be the best Mexican joint in greater-Appalachia. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

Awesome food. Sometimes crowded, but the food is worth it. Usually get the Hellbender, but have tried others and they are equally as good. One burrito usually makes two meals for me. Would recommend this place to anyone looking for a great meal.

Headed out to Davis from DC for a late season MtB weekend. Stopped in to Hellbender for beers Saturday night and then back for a post ride burrito Sunday. Good food, good beer, and great people. Would highly recommend stopping by if you are in the area!

They close early and can be a bit crowded around dinner, but they have a good beer selection and their burritos are enormous and tasty. This is the perfect post-riding dinner.

Hands down best burritos. Anytime we’re at timberline in the winter or visiting seneca rocks in the summer we make a point to come eat here.

After a camping trip to Dolly Sods, we were all eager to have a meal that wasn’t rehydrated or in bar form. We planned to stop at Hellbender on our way home, anticipating that burritos would be an excellent way to conclude the trip. These burritos exceeded our already lofty expectations. Allow me to share some of the wonderful things about this restaurant: — The burritos are massive, roughly the size of one’s face. — And feature fun, inventive filling combos — like Frito chili pie wrapped in a tortilla! — Seriously exciting vegetarian options are available, such as a seitan cheesesteak burrito with queso dip subbing for cheese whiz. — Local, delicious selection of craft beers on tap. — Spinach balls — the name doesn’t seem promising, but you are in for a croquette-like treat — Homemade desserts — the key lime pie was so outrageously good that I got a second slice to take home(and I’m kind of a brat about key lime pie, because I make a pretty good version myself.) — Low, low prices. We were pinching ourselves when the bill arrived. In spite of the fact that this place is more than 3 hours away from home, I plan to arrange future camping trips that will bring us back to the Davis, WV neighborhood. Hellbender Burritos is that good.

Another one of the amazing finds in the small town of Davis West Virginia. You wouldn’t think of seeing a Mexican place here but it is phenomenal. The burrito is so big you will certainly leave full. The homemade salsa is also fantastic, get some to go and you won’t be disappointed.

I had such a bizarre attraction even after going time 1 that I came back the next night for time 2. Time 2: Still 4 stars. Guacamole and Queso-still bangin. Chips still mediocre but made up for by awesomeness of queso and guac. The Hellbender(chicken)-wonderful. Omg. Blue cheese was wrapped in so wonderfully. Cilantro lime rice(duh). Steak Tacos-not enough cheese. Basically BF and I got different things but a swapped problem: not enough cheese… Time 1: 4 stars within the ranking of other area restaurants. Regrettably, my burrito was not as good as a Chipotle burrito, however, my boyfriends was far superior, so I maybe didn’t make the best choice. Service-friendly and quick. Non-invasive(a quality always to be enjoyed). Queso-amazing. Made up for the fact the chips were something like from Sam’s Club. Probably velveeta or something but it was still really nice and thick. Quite possibly my favorite queso I’ve had at a restaurant. The Admiral-boyfriend got this and it was amazing. Get this over what I got. Treehugger-excellent when smothered with queso, mediocre without. I just felt it wasn’t cheesy enough. The broccoli in it was of wonderful quality though. The tortillas were of perfect quality and wrapped the burritos beautifully. Difficult attempt to eat without fork. Stuffed so big, but rolled so perfectly. I will come back. I will probably try the hellbender. I will def get queso and guacamole.

What a find! Tucked in the middle of a little strip in Davis, this place is well worth the trip. They are definitely Mexican themed, but you have options that aren’t Mexican at all(buffalo chicken, cheesesteak, etc.). They are also vegetarian friendly, with some straight veggie options and several with meat substitutes. We started with the guacamole — plentiful for $ 6 and seasoned up just right. The entrée was the Hellbender Burrito — a spicy play on a buffalo chicken wrap with chunks of chicken, buffalo sauce, blue cheese sauce, and rice. It was huge! I could only finish about half of it(and I did a pretty messy job of that half). I’d almost recommend splitting it, but you’d definitely have to fork and knife it if you tried to cut it in half. There were several other burritos that I wanted to try, so I’ll be back. Word to the wise — check the hours before you make the trek. They aren’t open every day and they occasionally close for a week just because they want to.

Pretty awesome little place in the middle of ski country. Had great food, wonderful service, and just a really cool vibe. Their draft selection was really good too. Definitely high on my recommendation list! Weirdly, I go white water rafting every year, and while that too is in the middle of nowhere, WV, there are amazing restaurants there too! You keep it up WV! Certainly know how to pair food and adventure together!

Yep — this place is legit. Myself and my three roommates from college stopped in last weekend for lunch while visiting Blackwater Falls from Harman’s cabin rental. I’d found this place on Unilocal and — let’s be honest — there aren’t many options in Davis so this looked like the obvious winner. It’s very quaint when you walk in but it was really crowded the day we ate there. We were ushered into the downstairs bar area and had a nice corner table quickly cleared off for us to sit at because the upstairs main floor you come in when you enter was packed. There are probably around 8 – 10 tables on the main floor with a small wood burning stove providing heat — with another 4 – 5 small tables in the downstairs lower bar area. We ordered the spinach balls to start as well as a sampler platter of their salsa, guacamole and queso dip. The spinach balls were really delicious — like a rolled spinach all with cheese deep fried with a warm mustard dip. YUM. I ordered my burrito as a bowl without the tortilla to save on carbs. Mine was the Tree Hugger so it was a veggie burrito in a bowl. It was a huge serving. My friends all enjoyed their food and almost everyone left with leftovers because the servings are absolutely huge and the burritos are served with chips and cilantro rice. This place was legit like a real-world Merlotte’s from True Blood with stuffed bears hanging on the walls — random wall décor — wood panel décor and mismatched tables. The clientele seemed a mix of tourist(due to the ski resort nearby and the Blackwater State Park I’m sure) and local. Everyone stared at us when we walked in — for real. Not in a mean way — but a «ooooh new people!» kind of way. The food was phenomenal and our service was kind and prompt. I *think* we may have met the owner because my friend wanted to try their hottest hot sauce and the guy behind the bar came out and talked to us for a minute about it when he brought it over. He was very nice and personable, very friendly, said he kept the sauce he brought to us behind the bar because people had ruined burritos before by pouring too much on so he kept a handle on it now and only let people taste it when they specifically asked. He even actually reminded me of Sam Merlotte — super friendly guy — t-shirt and jeans with a ball cap. We really enjoyed ourselves here and had a great meal.

Great music, and a fun vibe. Protecting hellbenders habitat is a great cause. Many locals and tourists, crowded during both visits, expect to wait for a table. It’s hard for a grown man to sit and eat off the bar, nowhere for your knees to go. Service was mediocre and appeared disinterested, but the food was good. I ate here twice and enjoyed the pork dishes and green chili. Their slaw is killer. What’s up with the X-Files stuff? :)

Wow just wow! We were recommended this place by some locals. We got there and ordered the spinach balls. HOLYCRAP they were to die for!!! Then came the burritos. They were the size of a small dog. I got the Hellbender(buffalo shrimp) I had that with some sour cream. It was very spicy but I couldn’t stop eating it. My husband got a steak, shrimp, lettuce, rice and cheese burrito and it was delicious as well. I would definitely recommend this place. For a town who rolls up the streets at sundown this place had the best hours around! The owner was super friendly and our waiter was very helpful. Since it was our honeymoon the owner gave us free dessert, YUM! Too bad they’re not closer to a major city.

Awesome place for an outstanding burrito after an outdoorsy day. Tiny seating area, so you may have to wait, but well worth it! Lots of interesting burrito combos. I stuck with typical veggie black bean burrito. Comes with cole slaw(pretty good) and tortilla chips(average). Fast service, too!

Unfortunately the only reason this place doesn’t get five stars is due to its location. No, it’s not in the ghetto — quite the contrary, West Virginia! Thats right, WTFuck, move this bitch to a metro line, I want a gringo burrito just writing about it! And what about those gringo burritos? Fat, Loud and in your face, just like their West Virginian comrades. I supposed I shouldn’t be taken aback by the location. I mean Cannaan Valley has became the Tulluride of the D.C. metro area. And considering the number of senators sons raised on their nannies Central American arroz con pollo authentico, Hellbenber must live up to some lofty expectations. Bruh’s, Burritos, Booze AMIRITE, Brobody?! Rage.

Who knew West Virginia was famous for burritos. Hellbenders apparently is an endangered species of lizard what that has to do with burritos I’ll never know but hopefully this place isn’t threatened with extinction like its namesake because they do burritos quite well. Place is deceptive big, from the outside it looks like a carryout only kind of spot. It is located in the main«downtown» area of Davis and looks like a little hole in the wall from the outside, once you enter through the place is actually quite spacious on the inside. There are two rooms where you can sit and enjoy your meal, especially good for Saturdays as this is a big place to watch Mountaineer football. Staff is friendly and helpful, they just have that down home West Virginia charm I guess as every in the general area is pretty nice. Love the décor, especially the decorations in the bathroom, the X-files play set was especially cool to me. Great burritos, they have a variety of proteins to choose from, I went with the pork, moist, well seasoned and nicely put together. Burrito was a nice size and very filling, I couldn’t finish it all in one setting and made for a nice meal the next day after a quick warm up in the microwave. While the Hellbenders might not be long for this world, hopefully their fate won’t come to this place as good burritos are hard to come by and they do it well.
