Went her for Chinese New Year. Spent $ 20 for one ticket, and $ 40 for one with the unlimited beer tasting. I assumed purchasing a ticket online meant we would get a table. Not even close. After standing in long lines for greasy lo-mein(the .99 cent variety), egg rolls(not bad but your choice of dipping sauce was soy sauce or hot mustard), and pork belly buns, we gave up. The bun was decent, but its vegetarian counterpart made from fried tofu was tasteless mush. The kitchen looked perpetually in the weeds. They would push out 8 buns at a time and the line would move a foot. It was 20 deeps at some points, with three lines going at one time. I had one beer, but it wasn’t worth waiting for sub part food. We left before the dragon dance and fireworks it was so bad. They totally over sold the event. Won’t be returning.

Makan is just a beautiful oasis in Decatur. They’re simply offering awesome Chinese and Korean food that you cannot find in that part of town. They also have a full service bar! I usually get an old fashioned, but during our last visit they had Creature Comforts Koko Buni so I had to try it out. We always always always start off with the dumplings in chili oil. They are always changing the menu so I got to try some new items — Korean seafood pancake and seafood bibimbap. The fiancée opted for what she always gets — a beautiful bowl of ramen with spicy on the side. The restaurant has a nice contemporary Asian vibe. Don’t let their location one the base of the courtyard hotel discourage you. Get to know the owners Michael and George they’re extremely hospitable hosts and they’re story is fascinating.

Lunchtime in Decatur on a Friday… the only day Makan serves lunch during the work week. I met with a small group of Unilocalers here for lunch. Two of them I had never met before and so we had good conversation getting to know one another. The menu is pretty small at lunch, mainly dim sum with a bit of ramen. I think I had assumed more of a lunch time menu. Both ramens listed were piggy based and most of their other dim sum items were quite piggy. There weren’t any heartier menu items that were non pork based. There were plenty of dim sum bites that skewed shrimp, poultry, or veg. I went with the shrimp and crab sui mai and a duck bun. The sui mai was decent. Not wowza, but not bad. The duck bun wasn’t good. The bun was fine, but the duck inside had a layer of fat on it and the duck was dried out. I love this same dish from Miso Izakaya and this didn’t come anywhere close. To be fair service was great. Our server was super nice and food was delivered quickly.

Had not been here before and was very pleasantly surprised. Very creative and well prepared food offerings… we thought the appetizers were the winners as the main dishes seemed expensive for what was delivered, though still very tasty. The major disconnect for us with the overall ambiance. We sat near the kitchen(after trying to find an area that was not flooded with track lights) and lighting was way too much and created uncomfortable glare /overall lighting level too high… put some pools of light on the table and select feature areas and kill the rest! Also the music selections were totally out of sync with the possible«vibe» here. As this price point and level of creativity the music should be more ambient, hip, and lounge like… instead of 70’s and 80’s rock and such. I would also like a nicer presentation at the table, even simple paper table coverings… We would certainly come back again, select appetizers and cocktails and sit in the darkest part of the bar, and maybe bring our own «Bhudda Bar» music? Try it for the food!

I want this place to do well. I really do. The atmosphere is nice, the service is impeccable and the menu reads well. The food is cooked with skill and plated with artistic flair. The problem, unfortunately is in the flavor. It’s obvious that the team knows what they’re doing, I just wonder if they taste the food as it’s being prepared. On both visits my guests and I all found the flavors to be flat. Decatur has an abundance of really fine restaurants that are filled to capacity every day. Makan is in a prime location and has the chance to bring Decatur a cuisine that is woefully underrepresented, yet it sits empty a lot of the time. I hope they read this and consider my comments. I encourage you to give them a chance, and give them feedback if you agree with me. Or…give them praise if you don’t. I’ll try them again one day… but not for a while.

We came here after a long day of working at the mart and it was perfection! I ordered the pork belly bun and tonkontsu ramen… Perfection! The addition of pickled apples was perfect! The bun was soft and airy and the pork belly was perfectly seasoned! The service was great the hostess advised we could look around the bar and I believe the owner or manager got us a place right away! I will definitely be back when working in town again!

Finally went here for the first time last night, and everything was yummy! I ordered the wonton app and it was awesome. I also had the pork belly bun, which the waitress described as «life-changing.» I’m not sure I would go that far, but I would definitely get it again. I think I’ll try the duck bun next time– others in my group ordered it and it looked delicious. I’ve never had buns like that, and the texture was light and fluffy. The dumplings, ramen, and bibimbap looked great, too. A word of caution, my friend said the spicy noodles were very spicy(as advertised!), but to the point of not being edible for a person that likes spicy food. Everyone in our group loved their drinks, too. I only tasted the cold tea, and it was awesome. It comes with a story, which I love. The service was great, our waitress dealt with our large group really well, and the waiter that helped had the perfect dry, sarcastic sense of humor. I recommend this place for large groups. And they comp parking in the hotel/convention center for the first two hours– a huge perk since Decatur parking has gotten tougher. If you’re OCD like me, you can even look at photos on Makan’s website with parking instructions to make sure you’re in the right garage. :)
