I stumbled in this place while looking for a quick bite to eat. My original thought was the turkey burger but I opted for the black bean burger. It’s was surprisingly decent for this place to not be an organic/vegan establishment. I suppose I would go back again, good job on the burger. The only downside is the parking, since I didn’t need to go to the courthouse for anything :-) I had to wait patiently for a spot to open up at one of the pricey parking meters.

I’ve been here twice. Six dollars is an absurd price to pay for such a measly turkey sandwich. For that kind of money I can get half a pound of meat at Jimmy John’s on better bread. I felt like I was imposing on the staff somehow when I ordered to boot. I guess jurors keep the place in business.

I never would have popped in here except that I had just 45 minutes before a meeting at Decatur City Hall and I was absolutely ravenous. I loved that it was locally owned, but I loved even more that there wasn’t a line. They’ve got a little bit of everything on the menu: breakfast served till 11, burgers, deli sandwiches, salads, and the like. Smoothies seemed to be a popular item, as well. I ordered the chicken salad sandwich and it was delivered to my table quickly and with a smile. The sandwich was solid, but nothing breathtaking or that I’d travel for. Seems like they have a lot of regulars which makes sense given the neighborhood. The atmosphere, also, leaves something to be desired. It’s almost too big, with small cafeteria tables scattered throughout, the counter at the back, and flourescent lights. Nothing cozy about it, but it does the job. Service could not have been friendlier and the price was certainly right. Plus, free, fast wi fi!

I wanted to like this place even though I think the name is too cutesy. I wanted to support it with my money because it’s in Decatur and Decatur rocks… but, the sad truth about this place is that it’s just«meh». The space is large and nice looking but they filled it with these rickety-ass tables! The first table I set my tray down on wobbled so bad I thought a leg was missing. Okay, one bad table does not a restaurant doom – so I got up and went to another table. Hmmm, this table was wobbly as well! And on and on. I counted six tables that were wobbly. Maybe six wobbly tables isn’t a deal breaker for some people but to me, it’s a sign that they bought cheap tables. What else is cheap?! Well, that brings me to their breakfasts… I think they’re doing booming business because they’re situated right across the street from the Decatur courthouse. When I went to Sammiches N’ Stuff yesterday, there was steady traffic from the courthouse. I stood in line behind about seven sheriffs and prison guards. They all seemed to be regulars here and the prices would be very attractive as I don’t think most police officers make a ton of money. Anyway, the food. As I said before, I was only here for breakfast and I ordered two scrambled eggs with cheese, hash-browns, bacon, and a biscuit. It took about five minutes to prepare. For the total price I paid I wasn’t expecting food on the same scale as Thumbs Up Diner or Pastries A Go Go but even six dollars was too much to pay for this mess I received. The biscuit tasted like it was a Pillsbury biscuit from a can, the eggs were barely cooked and ran all over my thin styrofoam plate. The hashbrown, as their was only a small slab, like McDonald’s was so greasy I couldn’t even eat it. When I cut into it with my fork, it «gushed»! Blecch! The bacon was tiny and unremarkable. From the way they go brag on their website, I was expecting so much more from this place. I don’t think I want to even try their lunches. I saw on their menu that they have a hamburger and fries platter. I don’t think I’d trust these folks with raw meat – seeing the disaster that was my «scrambled» eggs. I should have walked across the street to Chik Fil-A!

Ok, I dropped in on a quick lunch break. I had heard so much about this great little sandwich shop. I was hungry but didn’t know what I wanted. I went to Sammiches N stuff today. I walked in and noticed the shop was large to be just a little sandwich shop. I reviewed the breakfast and Lunch menu’s. Very extensive and in expensive Great. I had a pulled Chicken barbeque sandwich and fries(Heck I was hungry and was playing it safe). It was decent. The sandwich was so large I could hardly finish it with the fries. I like the location, I like the price, I like the food. Okay, Must try their breakfast!!!

Once upon a Sunday, I stumbled into Sammie’s with a friend to pick up sandwiches for later in the day. It was breakfast time, and as I perused the breakfast menu, I couldn’t help but order the breakfast bowl — it has grits in it, and I love grits. So I was sold on «Sammie’s» after breakfast. But THEN later in the day, we ate the sandwiches that were prepared for us in the AM. And honestly everything on the sandwich tasted like it was grown, cut, or made at that instant. Everything was so fresh and delicious, I had 3 whole sandwiches(6 halves). And they were big halves… I definitely recommend for both breakfast and lunch(and probably dinner).

How sad! Unfortunately when I returned to Sammiches N’ Stuff a week later, looking forward to the great turkey and swiss on rye I had a week ago, it had changed for the worse. The first sign of this was when it took quite a while to get the attention of a staff member so I could order. Two people walked by me, making eye contact but not taking my order. Eventually one server shouted across the serving area at me to ask what I wanted, then reluctantly came over to write it down. My disappointment grew when I received my sandwich. The amount of turkey, previously proportioned perfectly to the mustard and mayonnaise and the size of the bread, had been cut in half! This made the condiments overpowering and the sandwich uninteresting. I assume the owners realized that they were not making enough money with the previous amount of turkey, but it was a letdown nonetheless. So I can’t keep my previous high recommendation for Sammiches N’ Stuff. It’s still probably the best sandwich shop in Decatur, but then, there’s not much competition.

I must write this in support of this awesome little place! BIGKUDOS to Sammiches N’ Stuff for being the only eatery actually giving out tastings at the«Taste of Decatur» this past weekend. The rain was horrid on Saturday but those who bought tickets still showed up and unfortunately, it was the worst«taste of» I’ve ever been to. Your ticket/money got you«coupons or deals» at some restaurants(free cookie, half off an appetizer… really?). Sammiches N’ Stuff welcomed you as if you were visiting their home — warm and inviting. They were prepared with plenty of wonderful samples of their homemade chicken salad, BBQ chicken salad, potato salad, sweet potato pie and cookies. They were even making green tea smoothies(DELICIOUS!) on demand and passing out those samples to those enjoying their treats. I stayed and ate lunch there. One of the guys even brought out samples of their grits. They were so pleasant and hospitable and the food was extremely tasty! And very affordable! Do yourself a favor and stop in to this great new shop. My only regret is not getting the names of the two guys I dealt with — they were fantastic!
