FAMILYFUN This is a little art studio that is great for parties, families, dates and social gatherings. They primarily have mall hours but do close early on certain nights so it’s best to call before visiting. You basically get to sit and create a custom piece of art for fun. You then leave the art to be fired and pick it up in approximately one week. This is becoming a very popular activity and have noticed these studios popping up everywhere. It is a great way to have good clean fun.

We held our 7-year old’s birthday party at That Pottery Place. We had a semi-private space that was perfect for our 35 – 40 guests(mostly lively kids!). We were able to bring in our own food and cake and they had a gift table for us. Parking was easy and the owner was well-staffed to handle our group. The owner and staff were very accommodating and assisted/instructed the group on how to paint the pottery. The kids had a blast! I would recommend That Pottery Place for any birthday party. We also do painting projects there just as a fun family outing.

Held my daughter’s birthday party there. They have a ‘separate’ party room, which is the main reason I picked this place over another closer to me… The room is really just a space in the back blocked off from the rest of the area by curtains, but it did provide the necessary privacy, sound-dampening, and separation. There was ample space to put our pizza, cake, drinks, decorations, and presents, which was also a big plus for me vs. other places I looked at. Bethany, the hostess that helped us, was great(though a bit harried b/c she was the only one there, and she was working the store AND our party) We selected pottery items from their ‘party shelf’, and both the boys and girls seemed to find something they were really interested in painting. The kids really enjoyed the experience, and it was one of the easier and more cost-efficient parties I’ve done. Parking was a breeze(unlike the other place we considered), and with some instructions to parents, the location was easy to find. I would definitely recommend them for a kid’s party, and we’ll definitely be back for a solo visit next time we feel the need to get creative with pottery.

I pulled my creative pants on and had a stupendous time here — no rush, loads of choices ranging from plates, steins mugs and even creepy knick knacks. So many colors and stencils, it’s just so much fun. I absolutely recommend using a GROUPON which is exactly what I did and made for a great afternoon with friends.

I’m not sure where to begin with how bad my experience was at That Pottery Place. In December 2012, I hosted the office holiday party and everyone had a fun time, so we decided to do it again for December 2013. NIGHTMARE! Party Reservation– This was easy enough. Two weeks prior to the party, I call, made a date, and was charged a $ 50 deposit to hold our date and time. Purposefully chose a weekday mid-afternoon. Beginning of the party– I show up with another colleague, our hands full of appetizers, and tell one of the workers that we’re here for the party. She looks dumbfounded and confused and asks«what party?» She has no recollection of me calling or of my putting down a deposit. Enter a second employee, Nancy. Nancy throws a hissy fit in the back room that they can’t possibly deal with our party now. I look around the studio; there is two older women, half-way done with painting their pieces. We help Nancy and the other employee pull together some tables as my colleagues trickle in for the party. At one point, I hear Nancy whisper to the other employee that she must have just forgotten to put my party down on the calendar. I let it go and try to enjoy the party. During the Party– Remember that piece of trying to enjoy the party? Let it go, because Nancy strikes again. She harassed almost every party attendee when they’d ask a simple question, like, «what color paint is on that piece?» Or «do I do one coat or two coats?» At one point, I overheard her say to one of my guests, «it’s called paint-your-own-pottery, figure it out.» I was shocked, as half of the guests this year had never done pottery before this party. The other coworker of Nancy’s was trying to smooth things over and help people get set up, but whatever she would say, Nancy would flutter behind her causing chaos. Checking out– During the end of the party, the good coworker went around to each person, wrote down their name, phone number, and description of the piece. At my request, she said she would keep all the tickets together when we check out so only one person would have to come back for pick up. Enter Nancy. About five of our 14 guests had left when I went to check out. Nancy couldn’t find our tickets(they were on the counter behind her). Nancy refused to give me my deposit back until the other coworker came up and did it for her. Nancy kept separating all of the different tickets. I asked her to keep them together so they’d all be picked up together. Pick up of Items– The first trip was fine. Yes, the first. See, when I went to pick the pieces up, I called beforehand to make sure all the pieces were together and was assured they were. I picked them up, brought them back to the office and began handing them out, and discovered that three people did not have their items. Imagine that. Bottom line: Go someplace else. The prices are not competitive and the customer service is awful. A colleague come up to me the day after the party and complained about how rude Nancy was and how irritating it was to have a good time. My colleagues are easy-peasy and not demanding in the least, so I can’t imagine how this place would handle a painting party for children.

I needed to clear my mind. I’ve been down this whole month of december. I saw a groupon for pottery & I thought to my self this should be fun. I text my friend Ciara asked if she wanted to paint today. Moving forward it’s located inside North Dekalb Mall. I wasn’t to thrill about that. Friendly staff, free studio time nice things to choose from. I ended up paying 5.00 for a heart shape bowl. I can’t wait till I go pick it up. I would recommend this to everyone very relaxing, no rush. & if you hate your design they can wash it off for you!

I’ve been to That Pottery Place with my son on many occasions and have even taken classes. Today, when I went to pick up the pieces we made for Christmas gifts to send to grandparents far away, they had misplaced the pieces that my son made. I would say that their effort to locate the misplaced bag was minimal, as they didn’t move the bags on the shelves around to see if was hidden, and didn’t seem to understand why I’d be upset to have to make a second trip to pick them up or that I needed to get our Christmas gifts in the mail. After our experience today, we will be going to another pottery place to create in the future. While we had fun creating the pottery pieces, not being able to pick them up when promised and the lack of effort used to try and locate them put a downer on our experience.

I love this place! The people that nice and the deals are great(50% off for college students on Thursdays and 50% for couples on Tuesdays) I’ve been a few times. It’s one of my favorite places to relax and to get away from the stressful city life.

After being emailed about a Groupon(that I was unable to snag) I learned that they are still in business — but in a new location! The Suburban Plaza on the corners of Scott and Church in Decatur! I believe this means not only more space inside, but also ample PARKING! YAY! I will have to visit soon soon soon!

That Pottery Place is a nice small and quaint environment for painting unfinished pottery. Located in the heart of Downtown Decatur, That Pottery Place is extremely kid and family friendly with vibrant and creative decorations. That Pottery Place is open Tuesday through Sunday and whether you’re painting by yourself or with a group you’ll enjoy it. The studio is available for children and adult parties as well as showers and a host of other occasions. Additionally, all you have to pay for is the ceramic pottery piece; the price includes firing, glazing and paint. The pieces are usually ready in less than a week. The only downside is the somewhat limited selection of pottery; however that will not stop me from going back. For hours and information go to . Happy painting!
