We had lunch and breakfast at Magpie over a weekend in Decorah, Iowa. The coffee shop is a fun atmosphere, well staffed and larger than it looks. The food is homemade, bakery items are great and the homemade Chai is AMAZING! The baked oatmeal was a lovely way to start the day and it was extremely tasty! Lunch was a turkey wrap with a nice dill sauce. My daughter ordered a chicken sandwich with a Chipotle mayo, spicy but tasty. The cinnamon roll cupcake was also delicious. We liked everything we ordered. Go!!!

Seven of us met at magpies for lunch and were each amazed at the great food. I had the south side burger which was delicious with a spicy sauce and avocado. The place is cute with a hipster coffeehouse vibe and the staff is pleasant. They also carry Spring Grove pop, a regional treat.

The coffee is fantastic with so many different option for coffee lovers, non coffee lovers, and those who just don’t know yet! The bianco espresso(a white espresso bean) is unique to Magpie in Decorah and all of my non coffee friends love it! The baristas are so friendly when and knowledgable about all of their products. They’re patient and so willing to help you with any questions you might have about the menu which was so nice when we went with a large group! I would recommend Magpie over any other coffee shop in Decorah!

Do you need a cup of coffee and a breakfast or lunch sandwich? Do you like the ambiance of a small town coffee shop, where locals go, and everyone knows your name? Then, Magpie Coffee house is the place for you! My niece, who just graduated from Luther College(May, 2015), recommended this coffee shop, so, of course, we had to try it! I’m glad we did. My husband and I ate lunch here, and it was good! We split the blt sandwich, and each had a soda pop. The prices were decent, and if you are a college student, between specific hours, you get a discount on your drink when you show your school id — you can’t beat that. We found the service to be good, as well as the food. I really liked the atmosphere here. It reminded me of our local coffeehouse back home in Denver, CO — cozy, comfortable, relaxing, and just a nice place to spend some time, relaxing, talking to friends and neighbors. I would go here quite often, if I lived in Decorah, Iowa, but I don’t. Thanks Magpie Coffeehouse, for a nice afternoon in Decorah, Iowa.

This was my second visit to Magpie. My first visit was for mediocre take-out coffee cake muffins. I came back to see the new space and try a drink. I appreciated the books and toys for the kids while the grown-ups talked and it was nice and quiet. The booths provide a measure of privacy and allowed uninterrupted conversation. The downside of this coffee shop is, well, the coffee – kind of a big deal. For $ 4 I expect a great latte. Alas, no. The soy lattes were very weak. My companion opened her cup to see if they remembered to put in the espresso. I told the server we’d be staying, so a real mug would be nice(I don’t like paper cups). Then our small lattes were delivered to us in to-go cups at a warm temp, not hot. The Magpie latte tasted burnt and was weak; like they put in coffee instead of espresso. Ordered small steamed milks for the kids(typically $ 1.50 in other coffee shops I frequent) and was charged $ 3 apiece; double the price. Ouch. Put the $ 15 tab on credit card and noticed a nice surprise 25 cent credit card fee(no visible sign notifies customers). I would understand that fee on a bill under $ 5, or $ 10, but $ 15? Magpie needs to rethink their product and pricing. I appreciate the effort put into the new space but, for what you get, they’re overpriced. Unfortunately, I won’t be going back.
