Ken’s Produce

Kens is a small store and the variety is less than you will find at a grocery store. The thing every review on Unilocal so far has ignored is that kens uses only local produce. Sure the selection is small and seasonal but that is because everything is locally grown! I have never seen anything sold here that was grown outside of Texas with most being within a few miles. Additionally, they have eggs from local free range birds and dirt cheap wild honey less than $ 5 a lb when you bring your own jar. Why shop big box stores nutrient deficient produce that has spent days on the road being trucked in from around the glob when you can support local business and eat higher quality nutrient rich local grown crops and support local farmers

In New York City you see small produce stands on every corner, or at least that’s what I remember from when I was younger. Fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, peppers and eggplants. Nowadays you have the giant grocery stores that have all the common items in abundance but not alot of variety. So it has become rare to find a small produce shop.
We have one here in Denton. I had been here once before many, many months ago. On a hunch, I decided to go in again. I was searching for pickling cucumbers (aka Kirby cucumbers). The large stores only carry large ones, not the ones required to make sour pickles. My hunch paid off. I also ended up with a white onion and some garlic.
They carry quite a few Mexican oriented items, spices, peppers and some candy. But a decent variety of vegetables. On the negative, some of the produce looked a little old and some of the cucumbers were a bit soft. But overall, it’s a good little shop.
If you are looking for a harder to find veggie, you may very well find it here.

We’ve driven by the store all year, meaning to go in, but not finding the time. I’ll find time in the future. They had a good enough variety that I was able to get my fruits veggies for the next few days. Everything was the same price as a store or less, and with the 10% student/​faculty discount, it was cheaper. The brussel sprouts and snow peas were still crispy and fresh. The peaches were local and looked great. The cherry tomatoes smelled and tasted like tomatoes. (If you like good tomatoes, you know why I’m making the point.) Most of what they had was seasonal, so I would guess that they would have less items in the winter. But since you can get in and out quickly in the afternoon, it’s a great place to stop mid-​week.

Great fruit and veg like you would never find at a grocery store. My kids live off of Ken’s and I go there twice a week. Reasonable prices!

The reason I’m giving such a low rating to this place is a variety of reasons. I have been to many little Farmers Markets here in the DFW and have seen much larger, diverse, fresh produce than here. I have a very open pallet when it comes to fruits and veggies but I literally went away from here with a few oranges (that weren’t rotten like some they were selling) and some salad dressing. Everything seemed on the brink of going bad. Maybe the take-​away message is not to go after 5pm because they are pretty picked over.
Price-​wise you have to be smart. Pecans were sold in a small bag for $ 9! However most of their produce is below price of the big-​box stores. I would recommend their home-​made dressings and their dried peppers. Very good!
Ken’s Produce has expanded their hours and seems to be growing and I have a lot of hope for them and look forward to seeing them improve.

When I drive by here I can never resist stopping in. This is a small store and you may even call it a fruit and veggie stand. They have a mixed bag of options here that seem to rotate depending on the season and on what is fresh. Everything that I have had is fresh and different then what you would find commercially available at your big box retailers produce aisle.
The 2 main things that I strongly recommend you check out are:
Their tomatoes
and their honey.
Both are among the elite of my favorite things list.

Forget getting your produce anywhere else in Denton. Ken’s has a million different varieties of any fruit or vegetable you can dream up. And they’re all fresh and absolutely delicious!
The people working here are totally nice and super helpful.
PLUS students get a 10% discount (pretty sure it’s 10%) AND there’s a frequent buyer card (at least there was when I lived in Denton a couple years ago).
Seriously buy as much as you can from this adorable and delicious store.
