I am a live music junkie… and local bands to boot? Sign me up! I had recently complained to a friend how it seems the live/local music scene had died down in Dallas. Don’t get me wrong I know there are shows all the time in and around Dallas but it seems like no one promotes them and/or cares. So when I heard about NX35 I was thrilled! My friend and I got the all weekend wrist band and I think it was worth it. All the bands I saw were good with the exception of 2 that were a little too out there for my taste. I was really surprised at the diversity of the bands and how many people were out there to support, it was definitely a mixed crowd that all came together for one thing, the music. The Flaming Lips show rocked! Almost as good as the first time I saw them… almost ;) I will have to agree with Adam K. s part about some people more interested in chit chatting about child nonsense during the set… there was a group right in front of us that was beyond obnoxious. I had never been out to Denton bars before so this was sort of a double judgement weekend for me. I was pleased with all of the venues(size, capacity, bathrooms, beer) I was able to go to with one exception… the SMOKE. ugh. I use to be a smoker but my goodness, not being around it for so long in public places has spoiled me. I am really looking forward to more events like NX35 in the upcoming years, I love to see what talent we have around the metroplex! Kudos to all those that performed… you all picked up more fans!

The Flaming Lips show was one of the best I’ve ever seen. What a great crowd!

the bands are playing great shows but the problem is the crowds. they are all very ignorant, fake, obnoxious and rude, going as far as to talk through an entire set of a band and just clapping when they finish a song. the biggest disappointment was the flaming lips and midlake. both bands put on a beautiful set but people did not have any interest in them. they were all there to take pictures of themselves and hope tag themselves on facebook. they also kept making obnoxiously loud comments about how amazing the balloons and confetti were, paying no focus to the talent on stage. it was sad to have to see wayne coyne of the lips explain to people what he was about to do and what the show was like, proving that he noticed barely anyone knew who they were or had really heard or known any of their songs. he even had to ask the crowd if they knew any of the songs because they didn’t seem to be singing along or pay any attention to them. the stage get up for the band was amazing, but it was such a waste of art because hardly anyone there was present for the music. it was all one big status event amongst pretentious youth. mdlake and the flaming lips are amazing acts who put on great shows, but it was the wrong place and setting. denton has its own music scene, but i feel the town is being overrun by douche bags and trendy hipsters. the crash that took me did great on thursday to a genrally favorbale crowd, being a highlight of the event, and telegraph canyon played an amazing and intense set that was partly interrupted by a loudmouthed drunk girl who kept talking to her friends during songs. chris the singer noticed and proceeded to in a comic manner, call her out on her bullshit, drawing a good laugh out of those in the crowd who were actually there to enjoy a show. i have seem some great shows in denton, but a free show featuring talked about bands in a small college town at the beginning of spring break is a potential to draw obnoxious status-based crowds. if this s what denton is becoming, i may want to stay away for a while.

The bars and venues are all around the square, so it’s very easy to walk from one club to another in this cute and sleepy downtown area. We started at Dans Silver Leaf, show was an hour late, went to Andy’s Bar for a few good sets, drove over to Rubber Gloves for a more heavy metal experience, caught the end of a weezer type rock group at Hailey’s, and then capped it off with a more experimental pop band, HEALTH, and The Boiler Room. All for $ 20. There was a green-ness to some of the bands, and that was the nice essence that abounded. Highly recommended. $ 60 for all four nights. Sat wrist bands sold out early this year. If your in town next year I’d consider making a weekend out of this. Very nice.
