Robin M has gushed about this place to me, especially the wor wonton soup, so I had to check it out with her one night. The place is small and fairly nondescript, in the same strip mall as Phở 95 is(and if you’re trying to find directions there, you might have to put in Garhing instead of it’s new name, Hong Kong BBQ). I have no idea what«garhing» stands for, might need to see if it translates into anything fun. Robin and I went in and ordered the wor wonton soup, and after going back n forth on getting something else(neither of us very hungry), decided on the pork fried rice. I *love* wor wonton soup — I call it «magic soup», because when you’re sick, it inevitably makes you feel better. and my body desperately wants it when sick. This place was a treat… because the soup was actually VERY thick with ingredients… it was more like a stew, and a chunky one at that, in terms of solids — than soup. The broth was ok but as it got cooler I more easily discerned it was«meh» — Robin said last time she had it the broth was better, making me question if they are consistent or not in their dish preparation. The tureen we received was chock full of char siu pork, bean sprouts(SO many bean sprouts), shrimp, scallions and other yummyties. I don’t recall whether there were mushrooms in it or not… the picture I will upload is a tureen *after* Robin and I had gotten full bowls out of it – now I am lumping this place into the growing piles of «the soup is enough to fill you like a whole meal». Phở 95, Phở Yo, 1 or 2 other places, and now Hong Kong BBQ. The fried rice was *excellent*…I am not keen on rice at all(firmly entrenched in the ‘noodle’ camp), but this was really well made, stir-fried with pork that was more like chunks of bacon, egg, and other miscellaneous ingredients. I don’t know what made it so tasty, but the pork had my inner carnivore howling like a werewolf… I wanted to lunge into a gigantic KFC-sized bucket full of the pork during *and* after the meal, it was so good. Prices for both these huge portions were about $ 8 per, so you’re not going to go bankrupt here. It amazes me how food prices in Denver can be so localized… I am becoming firmly convinced up and down S Federal, and within 1 mile either way, you’re going to roll up «good/great» and«cheap» every time you hit that area. HongKong BBQ’s no exception — I look forward ti coming back and checking out some of their other dishes(they have a few exotic ones on their menu as well). Pics uploaded. P. S. Robin M also told me many of these stores around here will sell you the char siu pork to take home and use in recipes of your own creation… me, I’m imagining hitting this place sometime and getting a pound in a take-home carton and just eating it like that. Arrrooooo!!!

Garhing is closed. It has been replaced by Hong Kong Barbecue(excellent, by the way).

Went back again for my favorite won ton noodles… still taste great but the won ton is significantly smaller than I remembered… I would rather them bump the price of the food than to cut down on quality… Sadly, they’ve dropped a notch on my scale and now they’re only a 3 star.

I believe Garhing to be some of the best AUTHENTIC Chinese food you can get in Denver. For a long time I used to get my won ton noodle soup and beef chow fun from an awesome mom and pop place called Hung Kee. The lady who ran it with her husband used to proclaim that she had the best chow fun in town, and indeed she did. When they decided to retire, I was happy for them, but I was sad to be deprived of their awesome food. Rumors starting spreading that a great new Chinese place was around that could compare to Hung Kee and I was of course intrigued. The rumors involved the past chef/owner of Hung Kee, basically implying that he comes in and helps this place with their menu and recipes. My boyfriend and I are so pleased with this place and have been going often. The won ton noodle soup is one of my FAVORITES around town, but I do like to ask for about half the noodles that they usually put in. True won tons, with delicate thin skins that are so TASTY. We often get vegetables like on choy(Chinese broccoli) and dau miu(pea shoots) and are always happy with those. They also serve a great salt and pepper shrimp dish that is darn good. I look forward to trying even more things in the future. The server there is really sweet. She loves making small talk and will definitely remember you if you come in. If you have any questions or need any suggestions she will totally help you out. I definitely recommend this place for authentic tasty Chinese food!

When Hung Kee closed across the street I was certain I wouldn’t find another place like it again in Denver. I was so happy to hear about Garhing and a rumor that the chef/owner of Hung Kee helped with the menu and recipes here. To my amazement my first night dining at Garhing the owners of Hung Kee were eating here as well. This was a really good sign. On another visit the owners of Lao Wang were here eating. Wow! So I like the Won Ton Mien(Egg Noodle Soup with Won Tons and Chinese Broccoli) here. Their broth was really good and the won tons better than the now closed Hung Kee. Their dry style chow fun ranges from ok to excellent, sometimes the seasoning is lacking. I’ve had to add soy on occasion. The salt and pepper shrimp is awesome, same or better than Hung Kee and JJ. Salt and pepper shrimp is a whole shell shrimp that is deep fried and then topped with rock salt, garlic, green onions and hot peppers. I eat the shell and all, same as I do with a shrimp tempura or a deep fried shrimp head at sushi. I don’t know why more people don’t eat the shell, it has so much flavor and crunchy like a potato chip. I’ve also had the On-Choy and my favorite Chinese vegetable Dou Miao which are the shoots of the pea pod plant. You can order anything the way you like, I usually order the Dou Miao stir fried with garlic and Chinese wine. Some places do not do Dou Miao very well, it’s often stringy like celery can be difficult to chew. Garhing makes a mean Dou Miao. Check it out, I recommend. The young server woman who works there is super friendly and enthusiastic. Most likely she will come and chat with you and can explain each dish very well. They also have live Tilapia and live seafood/shellfish.

Discovered this place from an ad in a Chinese Newspaper that my mom found while visiting us from L.A. We had a family meal — my mother ordered the entrees. It was one of the most satisfying meals we’ve had since moving to Colorado two years ago.

This is a new Chinese restaurant we stumbled across on our way to eat phở, we decided to stop here instead and are really happy we did. When we walked in, the first thing I noticed were the dry erase boards on the wall covered in Chinese characters. This place does not serve typical Americanized Chinese food. We ordered Hot Pot #4, Seafood with Tofu in clay pot. It came with a delicious ginger black bean sauce. The seafood included fish, scallops, shrimp and squid, all cooked to perfection. My boyfriend said if he had time to review this place he would say it was the most authentic Chinese he’s ever had in Denver. I would have to agree. They serve freshly cooked Live Seafood and I’ve never been anywhere else here where the menu looked so exotic. Here are a few examples: Jellyfish and soy sauce Braised Chicken, Deep Fried Pork Intestine, Crab Meat with Fish Maw Soup, Bamboo Fungus with Crispy Tofu, Beef with Bitter Melon, and Walnut Shrimp with Mayonnaise. Try one if you feel adventurous. I dont recommend the fried rice if you are expecting the normal American Chinese variety. My friend ordered some and it was kind of bland, but that may have been because she didn’t pour the chili sauce over it like she was supposed to. But you should go to this restaurant for a taste adventure and try something new, not order boring old fried rice. Seriously people, go check this place out! The prices are very reasonable, the food is great and our server was very attentive. And dont think that all they have to offer is crazy stuff like bamboo fungus. They also have some fabulous sounding items like Seafood Udon Noodle, Wonton Noodle Soup with Roast Duck, Sauteed Seasonal Vegetables, etc.
