Love the Shag. Always a different crowd. You never know if you’re gonna walk in on a Bachelorette party, a group of gang bangers, some handlebar-mustachioed hipsters, or all of the above. Tonight it’s all of the above. And I’m super drunk right now as I write this because they pour a good strong drink and the owner is amazing. Bummer they removed the stripper pole. Good thing they removed the stripper pole. Cheers.

First time into Denver and i happened on this place while wandering around. Nice open front with big Papasan chairs in the back. Bartender was friendly and the atmosphere was chill. I’ll come back before i leave town.

Let me revise this. Only did that initial review because if you fill out their online survey and post a Unilocal review, you get a free drink. So here’s my revised thoughts. They drew us in with pretty good music and we were in the mood to dance, but then it went back and forth. New school hip hop, old school hip hop. some 90’s/80’s. Eh. Wasn’t feeling it. The DJ was all over the place. My friend and I requested a song and the DJ was like ‘ok that sounds good, I like it. I’ll work it in’. 45 minutes later… nothing. Asked him again, he said it was coming up. Didn’t happen. Next thing we know, it’s last call and they’re turning the lights on. What’s frustrating was the dance floor was nearly empty. DJ should have been able to read a crowd and see that his jams were not cutting it. Not sure if there are better options in Denver, as we were visiting from Seattle. But I left feeling buzzed and bummed at the end of the night and wasn’t able to dance. Boo.

Are you kidding me? This place is amazing. Great roll up door entrance with the perfect amount of natural lighting, groovy music and best of all the absolute best drinks and service from Cliff the half Korean half 30% German 20% world smoothie mixologist that won us over with his charm, attention to detail and most of all KILLLERBLODDYMARY mix and infused vodka. This place alone will bring me back to Denver.

Just a tip, this comes up on searches for gay bars and while I have nothing against straight bars or straight people it would have been nice to see some other gays. It is a great open space though, would like to see something like it in Austin where I’m from.

Stopped in last Thursday about 8pm, not much happening. I think we were two of four customers? The bartender was awesome and made some killer cocktails. We had a great time chatting with him, but overall the bar doesn’t stick out in my mind. Perhaps it would be better for the late crowd though.

Great place! Love the happy hours. I’m quickly becoming a regular. It’s classy without being stuck up, fantastic music, people are open and friendly. It’s got a neighborhood feel but right in the middle of downtown.

***Girl walks up to the bar and stands right next to me.*** Girl: Hey honey! I just want to let YOU know that you smell soooo goooooood. Hmm! Me:(Thinking she thought I had weed on me.) Oh, ugh, I don’t smoke weed. That must be something el… Girl: Don’t matta, babe, you smell REAL good! Me: How is that possible? I’ve been, on average, ten feet away from you the entire night. So… Girl: Huh? Anyways, can I have your number? Me: ***Does a hybrid wave/robot move away from her.*** First, much love to the girl in the blue/green hooded sweatshirt attempting to holler at me at this dive-y hip-hop lounge. On one hand, it’s nice to be acknowledged that my Twins fitted(newly bought) and Timberlands look good on me. At least, it’s enough to get a compliment from one girl. On the other, that pickup line was really weird. LOL! I mean, why say that ever? Also, assuming if I were single, all you had to do to talk to a big guy like me was buy me a tray of tater-tots. ***** I rolled up into the spot with a crew of co-workers looking to have some fun, and Shag Lounge seemed to have everything one could every want: –A striper pole(though, not very stable). –An amazing mural of Biggie.(RIP.) –Dirt-cheap drinks. And about the drinks, I bought tons for my co-workers, and had an extra few throughout the night. I don’t think I broke $ 30.(Pretty good!) Not to mention, the DJ — rockin’ the Orioles hat — surprisingly spun some classic old school hip-hop and r&b hotness that I got down to. Not some Top 40 blah-ness.(I dig it!) I definitely felt ten years younger. The only difference? This time, I had a real I.D. Bathrooms were surprisingly well maintained and cups cleared from the table, every five minutes throughout the night. He busted his a**, phở sho! I would’ve tipped him, but he was already on to the next job. Give this mystery man a raise! BTW — Shout-out to the girl grinding on the dude from the Bronx.(I know, because we had a conversation at the bar, while she was all over him.) If you’re reading this, I hope you’re okay after your partner accidentally rammed you into the ground, because both of you slipped on a dropped White Russian. Also, heels and dancing on the bar wasn’t a good look for you, either. Good times! Can’t wait to go back!

This place seems to be a bit different every time I go. Depending upon the night, the crowd can be much different. I have seen a pattern of young locals that seem to be… maybe the word is, «bored». I will say that every time I have gone… the bartenders have been amazing. They are very cool and chatty. They don’t get caught up in cliques at the bar and really treat each customer like a friend. I would go again if I was directly in the area, otherwise, Its just a pleasant place to drink downtown that’s not too pricy.

Stumbled into this place unexpectedly on a random weekend trip and absolutely loved it. We arrived at about 5:30pm on a Friday night and we were probably two of six guests there but we had a great time. The music selection was a solid mixture of 80’s classics and the environment was chill. Drinks were $ 3 – 5 a pop and there were booths to hang in, and TVs to watch. Ill definitely be coming back for another on my next trip.

I HATE whiskey in plastic glasses, I HATE flat beer in warm glasses. Weird crowd, but I’m not a downtown lounge type. It still feels like a dive bar even with the pretty lighting. The sidewalk and patio are dirty. It just doesn’t feel classy at all; particularly with the badly attached«stripper pole» in the middle of the room. What’s THAT about? Nice bathrooms though.

Can music ruin a perfectly good bar? The answer is yes and Shag Lounge proves it. Was hanging with new school friends here after class and had a great time enjoying cheap beers(and cider!) during their strangely long weekday evening happy hour. The music was hipster dance kind of stuff: Washed Out, MGMT, Robyn. It was played off the jukebox or something and was nice music to have a conversation to. Then 10:00 pm rolled around, the beers got suddenly more expensive and a DJ started to play the most annoying dub-step crap way too loudly. We went from having nice regular-volume conversations to essentially shouting at each other over the music. The reality was the crowd at this place was pretty small the whole time. Nobody was dancing or appeared interested in dancing. So the music was more annoying than appropriate. Shag Lounge should ditch the DJ during the week and focus on the«lounge» aspect of their name, which means, you know, being able to chill and have good conversations with people.
