Whats not to love about Des Moines! You can experience the 4 seasons in full effect! You can see some of the most amazing artist ever for free, you can get drunk at a bar for under 10 bucks and you can pretty much ride your bike safely anywhere on our killer trails system! Our airport is super fast,(not that you ever would want to leave). We have a great music scene, and some awesome festivals every year… Think 80/35, Art Fest, and heck we have one of the best Farmers Markets in the country every Saturday! We got some cool minor league sports action and some major league restaurants! It’s up to you Des Moines… Des Moinesssssssssss –in my best Frank Sinatra voice!

I actually love this place(one of only 2 places in the mid-west) it’s quiet, serene and pretty, especially in later summer or early fall. The city is inviting, easy to get around or through, no stress and the only spot in the mid-west that’s lived up to the«golden» fields image you hear about.

I had no idea what to expect. The only thing I knew about Iowa before visiting is corn. And now that I have visited, the only thing I know about Iowa is corn, Iowa caucuses, and Obama. So while visiting on a rooftop restaurant, I saw a stage being set up. I ask the server what’s up. She tells me Obama. I go to hotel, shower, and come back out, wait in line forever while people sell Obama playing cards, pins, tee shirts, and whatever else they can fit his face on. And I get to stand right behind him, shake his hand, Michelle’s hand, and saw both the little ones too.. . Now when I think of Des Moines, this is all I think about.

Coming from Iowa, I’ve never been particularly proud of my homestate. Population 2 million, more pigs than people. No cool landscapes, lots of corn, homogenous backcountry folks who dig hog roasts and tractor chicken… Recently though, it’s felt good to hail from the hawkeye state. First: the glorious sunsets. My how those pesticides create an amazing technicolor splendor on the horizon. Next: Obama. Everyone else recognized his brilliance too, but we’re talking about the corn belt here, so it’s worth a mention. Of course, we couldn’t have done any of it without the University in Iowa City, the state’s cultural epicenter. And thank god, ‘cuz it brought the first sushi restaurant in all the land. Lastly, what really inspired this review: being the third state in the nation, the first in the Heartland, to legalize gay marriage. Iowa, you’ve done pretty well for yourself. But I sure ain’t moving back.
