For the quality of the rolls, they are a overpriced, especially for their special rolls. The fresh fish in top of the rolls was better than the rolls themselves. Too much rice and not enough fish portions. Skip The green tea ice cream. The staff was friendly, but too fast and inattentive. Sadly, it appears to be a struggling local joint favored by regulars that know the owners and have been there for years. We were disappointed.

The yakisoba wasn’t even a yakisoba. It’s not suppose to be this oily and thick noodles, didn’t even taste like it as if they used some random sauce to make it look like a yakisoba. I was disappointed about the rolls as well bcuz it was too small that they didn’t even have enough main things in it.

I have never been sicker than when I ate here. I have had lots of raw sashimi and sushi of varying qualities from many different restaurants but the next morning after eating sushi at Kaihana I was so ill that I couldn’t leave the bathroom for hours.

Kaihana was a childhood favorite of mine that we stopped going to for one reason or another, but I was blown away when I returned. The food was delicious and fresh and they were so kind to us even though we were the family with the noisy child in the corner. I ordered the soft shell crab roll and a rainbow roll which was more than enough to fill me up. The soft shell crab was warm and had a wonderful slight crunch to it without being too difficult to eat. As for the rainbow roll every roll was evenly cut and had a perfect little corner of the leading piece. I am so happy to see how well they are doing here in Des Moines. My mother ordered a Tuna roll and edamame along with her rainbow roll and the tuna roll was absolutely perfect! It can get a bit pricey but as for sushi goes the price is absolutely on point! I would not ask them to lower the price as their ingredients and style are well worth the it! The parking lot could use a few touch ups along with the back corner of the restaurant they use for storange(?) but otherwise everything was wonderful. I think next time I’ll come by myself and just enjoy the quiet atmosphere with my sushi! I’m sure the other customers like the quiet darker tone of the restaurant as well.

Dont let the outtside fool you. Great food, decent price. Furniture could be upgraded or repaired. But the food and service make up for it.

Good place! I’d say it feels like a very traditional cuisine and atmosphere in that restaurant. There is a bar section with like 7seats and a room on the back. It’s a pretty big space. It was empty but I didn’t mind because the menu is long to read and a little quiet place does not hurt at all. They have tons of different rolls, maki sushi, salad, teriyaki, Korean bibimbap etc. I had 2 sets of rolls: Hot Night and Tropical Poke. It was delicious, both sets were 8 rolls. It was a decently big portion overall even if I noticed uneven cut sized rolls. Freshness? The tuna and shrimp tasted fresh to me. Service? Lady who took care of the orders was friendly. Cup of water always refilled in time sounds good to me. Prices are right, free edamame when checking was also a good thing. Will come back to try other rolls and salads too. Bookmarked it. Arigato Kaihana :)

Down right delicious! Will be back since being first timers and all… there’s so much to try. Love how they don’t have, a secret Korean menu. Kamsamneda!

I’ve been all over the states. This is my top 3 sushi places, ever. You owe it to yourself to find this little one and bask in your discovery. Get the albacore nigiri for a start. Life gets better soon after.

Stopped for dinner with some friends and had their family platter. Chicken teriyaki, beef teriyaki, pot stickers, rice, salad, and California roll which were all good. Teriyaki sauce wasn’t too sweet which I like. Tried Calamari as an appetizer but wasn’t impressed as it was large and overly hard to chew. Will come here again to try their sushi.

I got a few rolls and the teriyaki chicken and everything was delicious. The staff were friendly and the atmosphere was nice. I loved the lanterns and other decorations.

Tried again, glad we did! The tempura was excellent, as were the rolls(avocado maki, cucumber maki and California). Glad to have this spot in our town!

Great service and yummy sushi. They do lots of carry-out, so it can be quiet enough to bring a good book in the evenings. They serve Bi Bim Bap which is great, but it doesn’t come with the usual side dishes like kimchi etc so that was a bummer. Still the service is awesome.

I haven’t been to Kaihana on over a year and the last time we went the sushi was over the top excellent! So tonight we happened to be in Des Moines and decided to stop in for dinner. We ordered the 59.99 Love Boat which was a bunch of Nigiri and a few rolls. Some of the Nigiri was ok and some of it was warm and just not fresh at all! The«Hot Night Roll» should have been an explosion of flavors. Instead it was bland and the spicy tuna on top of it was blah. On top of this they serve soda by the can so forget ordering soda refills! Really sad their sushi has gone down hill. It was really great the last time we went. Won’t be going back again.

Super friendly service, but food was just ok. Would considering eating here again if I were in the area and very hungry, but nothing I would go out of my way for again. The interior was a little dated, but it was clean enough. I saw the big fans mentioned in other reviews and luckily it wasn’t a hot day today, so I can’t comment on the stuffiness of the restaurant. Beef Donburi — Good, but not great. Was a little too heavy on the onions and didn’t have a good balance with everything else. Chicken Yakisoba — Skip this. Edible, but sad to say I’ve had better tasting yakisoba at mall food courts. Philly Roll — Pretty standard and hard to mess up. Good, and would have it again. Crunch Roll — Shrimp tempura w/cream cheese sprinkled with crunchy stuff, lol. Again, I’ve had similar rolls at other places and this is pretty hard to mess up. It was tasty and the serving size was pretty standard.

I called at 10 thinking that they would already be open. Despite the fact that they open at 11, a kind man answered the phone and took my order anyway. He directed me to the correct website where I could see the full menu to decide. He recommended a bento box combination and I was very impessed. Give them a try.
