I wasn’t horrible. All the 5 star reviews though show that too many people in the area have never been to Birmingham and eaten at Costas, Jom and Nicks, Johnny Rays, Moes or Full Moon.

This place has decent food, a clueless staff and is absurdly overpriced. I’ve waited at the drive through and never heard anyone ask to take my order. Drove up to the window, seen by plenty of staff and ignored. Sat there for 5 mins waving at people. Came inside and had to wait over 20 mins for my food. The place only had a few folks there. The kitchen staff outnumbered the patrons by 5:1. You would have thought they’d move along faster. Food’s okay. The ribs are good, stew is terrible.

Came out for the BMX national and wanted some good Alabama bbq went to another place yesterday and wasn’t satisfied so we came here today. Now my craving is over. The bbq here is a lot different then what we do in Southern California but this was still a good tasty meal. Good hospitality. My son loved the Mac and cheese, green beans, and fried green tomatoes. Recommend there ¼ chicken breast and ribs.

Eating here was on our list of ‘must do’s’ this trip. Fried green tomatoes were nothing short of outstanding. Perfect firmness, total batter coverage, and crispy. Fried okra was good but could have used a dash of chipotle powder or other hot spice. Rubbed ribs were super tasty even without sauce. Pulled pork was average. Slaw was good. Selection of sauces was unexpected and added great variety to the meal(10 total not counting the honey mustard dip for the tomatoes). The hot version was not hot by So Cal standards so those with sensitive taste buds or tummies need not worry. Highlight of the night was the dessert which we had to get ‘to go’ because we were stuffed after eating only 2⁄3 of our meal. We tried both the banana pudding and peach cobbler. The pudding was sweet and creamy. Perfection. The cobbler was almost a bread pudding and was divine. Recipe please! We enjoyed chatting with the young staff and the owner who is clearly filled with pride and joy as he should be. The place does a booming catering and take out business as evidenced by the constant stream of customers leaving with arm fulls of food. Go there, enjoy the home-style cooking, and relaxed atmosphere. And, before you leave, pick up a camo BBQ Shack ball cap as a souvenir.

Usually good. Annoying fee for using a debit card. Got a pulled bbq sandwich today and threw away half of it after biting into a hard bone or tendon and hunk of fat.

Pretty good bbq. Like the mustard sauce. Prices a little high for portions. Don’t like that they charge extra for using debit card.

First trip to the BBQ Shack this evening. I’m from Birmingham where BBQ is a religion with two or three BBQ restaurants within a few miles of any place. So I am a tough critic and definitely have an opinion about my Q. I tried the pulled pork with fries and fried okra, then peach cobbler. The strange thing about south Alabama BBQ is its served without sauce. But in this case, it gave me a chance to taste the meat sauce less. It was tender, moist and had a great flavor. Added the«hot» red sauce(not what I’d consider hot). Good for 4 stars. The fries were pretty good and the okra was fried crispy in what appeared to be a flour batter(prefer corn meal myself). The cobbler was good and served hot. A scoop of vanilla ice cream would have made it great. I’ve visited Dothan a couple dozen times on business and eaten at several other BBQ restaurants. This is the best I’ve found. I’d come back and would recommend the shack to anyone looking for a meal in Dothan.

Loved this! The fried green tomatoes, pulled pork and all the sauces were great. Definitely worth a few minutes drive off the main road. Peach cobbler was the best I’ve ever had. Maybe the best dessert I’ve ever had. Great service!

Interesting little BBQ shack. The pork ribs were definitely delicious and tender. The sauces are pretty good as well(not too spicy to an Asian taste). The server was very accommodating to providing a great carry out service. The beef and pulled pork are highly recommended. I definitely would also recommend the peach cobbler and banana pudding(eat them as a combination, they somehow complement each other)!!

While they do have numerous sauce options, you can eat your pulled pork — and you HAVE to have pulled pork — with absolutely no sauce! Jackson, the owner, has perfected the art of marinating the meat! You MUST also order the fried green tomatoes. If you’re not from the South, you may be asking yourself if they’re really that good. Let me answer that for you… YES! Honestly, as long as you’re within the State of Alabama(or in the tri-state area even), there’s no drive too long to visit this establishment. The building isn’t much to look at, but you will NOT be able to get enough of the food. Kudos to this great family!

Best bbq ever! We stop by here on the way to the beach every time. Fried pickles, green tomatoes, Brunswick stew, banana pudding and peach cobbler are also awesome! It is now a family tradition.

Still the best in Alabama, Maybe Georgia too. The best food, service with a smile. I was able to try some other sides this time around. All very good. Don’t be afraid to try something new or out of your comfort zone at the shack. As always sample the sauces. Don’t worry about the deserts. You won’t have room for them anyway. Looks rough on the outside, warm and friendly on the inside. Love the smell inside too… first step inside is marvelous. Years and years of accumulated Q. The best.

Very very impressed. Stopped on a whim and I’m just blown away by the quality of BBQ. They have eight different types of homemade BBQ and mustard sauces. Pulled pork was cooked to perfection, and held the smoker flavor. An excellent find in lower Alabama will definitely make the drive just for the BBQ in the near future

Okay so… I’m not a huge fan of bbq but I love this place! No, seriously, try the chipped chicken plate or the ¼ white meat chicken dinner plate. Also the ribs are spectacular! My mom loves the fried pickles from here. The restaurant literally is a SHACK! Also for BBQ it is slightly over priced. But no need to worry, the taste is spot on and the service is friendly!

Our first time here. The great food more than made up for the zero atmosphere. We will definitely be back!

We stopped here on a cross-country business trip. My husband LOVES barbecue, so much so I never have the chance to crave it. He ordered the BBQ, which he loved, more so the dry rub ribs than the glazed. I read rave reviews on the ribeye steak(served after 5pm) and decided to try it, admittedly with fairly low expectations, especially since we were picking it up to reheat in our RV later. I just didn’t want BBQ… again. Sorry. Being a red blooded girl from Texas married to a husband who grills an amazing steak perfectly medium rare, I’m tough to please, but polite about it. Even reheated(carefully!) this was one of THEBEST steaks we’ve ever had out. My husband even agreed. Perfect seasoning, juicy as could be and perfectly medium rare. I’ve had the fanciest of places screw up medium rare. They could learn from The BBQ Shack! Perfect, perfect, perfect! Sides were all great — beans, cole slaw, etc. Cole slaw is particularly excellent. Service was warm and friendly. The gal was very patient while I sorted out our order. Banana pudding was wonderful as well. Way to go, folks, way to go!

This used to be my go-to BBQ place, but the quality has really declined over the years. Specifically, the shredded pork has quite a bit of fatty gristle, compromising the overall flavor. Yes, their sauces are tasty, which is good because you’ll need a lot of it to compensate for the lackluster quality of meat. Also, their prices are unreasonable for the small portions. You’ll be happier to just bounce across the street to Smokey Joe’s.

Yes, it’s a shack, but a shack that makes great BBQ. A little pricey, but the serving of a full rack of ribs is huge. The choice of BBQ sauces is good. Sweet or mild are great, but hot really kicks it up.

Good BBQ sandwich, fries, and value for the dollar. I like a BBQ joint with the laid back atmosphere found here.

I have since moved away from the area but I’m compelled to write a few things about this place. It’s a little off the beaten path and a little sore on the eyes but worth the trip. We heard about this place by word of mouth and we ended up frequenting it about once every week or two. The owners were from Wilmington NC and this is the only place in town that sells NCBBQ! Our main staples were pulled pork sandwiches and fried pickles. Bottom line, I would recommend this restaurant to everyone.
