Brooklyn Fit Club at Tangerine Hot Power Yoga

Why oh why did it take me so long to write this review? Don’t know because I certainly haven’t stopped thinking about the amazing session I had at Tangerine Yoga.
First off, the owner is so down to earth and friendly, she really makes the place, the studio is clean and beautiful and the watermelon water was delicious.
That cold towel with the amazing scent of eucalyptus almost made my eyes roll back.
I so want to go back!

Everything about this Studio’s welcome is custom made for the ideal yogic experience! You feel as though you’re entering a sanctuary with the down to earth but attentive staff. The fruit and almond displays, the clean and spacious environment, the puppy who twirls.
While I experienced this class as relatively gentle, I was so happy to get a good healthy sweat on without ever feeling overwhelmed! That said, no showers at a Hot Yoga Studio makes me feel like Tangerine is for walking distance clientele only. If there were showers here I’d definitely be a regular living 5 stops away. That said, I appreciate that the bathrooms are large and are wheelchair accessible (which I guess was the necessary code trade for showers). Tamara gave amazing personal adjustments and led a beautiful class. I would love to try a 75 minute class sometime. Thank you so much for hosting us and making this happen! It was a treat and delight to practice and to get to meet other Brooklyn Fitness lovin’ Unilocalers!

I was so nervous walking into the establishment because I have never done any form of yoga beforehand.
The second I walked in, the first thing came to mind was the temp. It was about 85 °F, the HEAT!
It suppose to be a relaxing and mediating place.
We were offered white towels and no-​slip mats to use during the session.
The mats were the best! It was thick enough that you don’t slip and it was thin enough for you to feel the heat coming from the walls and floors.
We started off with the basics of the yoga movements-​glad that a beginner like me could have followed along.
But I do have a suggestion, I hope she doesn’t want us to keep our heads down (mountain pose) for too long because the blood rushes to the head hence the heat, can be a health hazard. I had a slight headache afterwards.
I loved that there were no mirrors along the walls so you can focus on your inner self, mediate and «listen to your heart» as Tamara constantly quoted.
But overall, it was a great 1-​hour experience, and the watermelon juice afterwards was very refreshing.
«Let it be» was the perfect song to end the session today.
The watermelon juice at the end of the session was a great treat.
What a great way to end Friday night. Sweat out the toxins!

Awesome Event and my first Fit Club activity. This was also my first hot yoga experience and I really enjoyed it. Tangerine Hot Power Yoga is conveniently located downtown Brooklyn on Hoyt & Schermerhorn, literally a stone’s throw from the A train.
The studio is really cute and has only been open for a short while. The studio is very clean and the mats are great quality. The staff is really warm and friendly. The best «staff member» was Charlie, a miniature poodle mix. He made sure to welcome everyone to the studio.
The yoga class is great for all levels. I’m a beginner and was able to attempt each move, but there were modifications for those who were more advanced. I definitely didn’t hydrate enough prior and the heat started to get to me about half way through. I desperately wanted to jump over 6 people and run out of the studio. The instructor was very encouraging so I stuck through the entire class. I’m glad I did. Best of all, after the class you get a complimentary cold towel, free almonds, tangerines and watermelon water to hydrate you.
Unfortunately, there are no showers so bring a change of clothes so you’re not stuck in wet clothing. The locker rooms are small, but there are keyless lockers. I’m glad my first hot yoga experience was at Tangerine as this was a therapeutic and pleasant experience. Thanks to Peter D for introducing us to something new!

Need a physical and mental detox? Tangerine is the place!
On a back end street of Downtown Brooklyn you will find this hidden gem. Had it not been for this event I would had never known that this place existed. This is a very modern clean studio. The staff was very friendly and welcoming upon arrival. I must admit that at first I was really intimidated by Hot Yoga but I wanted to be open minded and give it a shot and I’m glad that I did. The class was really amazing. We did basic yoga poses and yes it was HOT, everyone was sweating like crazy including myself. I didn’t even know that it was humanly possible to sweat that much but apparently it is! It was definitely a good mental and physical detoxification. It forced you to ignore your environmental circumstance and reach within for comfort. I really loved it. In the end the instructor threw cold towels on us which felt so good!!! We then laid in the dark while she played a soulful rendition of the Beatles «Let it be». Afterward we had fresh watermelon juice waiting for us up front. It was really a great experience and I would love to come back. They do have a locker room with lockers that do NOT require you to bring a lock. There are no showers but Im not the gym shower type anyway. I always run straight home. This place is amazing and I highly recommend putting any fear to the side and giving this a shot!!! Thank you to the staff at Tangerine and Peter D for another great Brooklyn event!

Shout out to the owner for letting me keep my bike inside because of my key situation.
The studio is so jce and clean and cozy.
The floors are beautiful and though the space is small, they use every inch of it very well.
Because I’m used to my own cheapie yoga mat, it was nice to use a fancy pants mat with a nice towel to boot, it definitely made my experience more comfortable.
The room is large and there is space for many. I loved how there were stickers on the floor to help for placement. Such a crazy smart idea!
The instructor was great at focusing attention kn each of us and the cool towel at the end was such a treat. I highly recommend the watermelon water to get those electrolytes up!
I already told a friend and we will be back very soon.

I will have to admit that last year I was intimidated by the Brooklyn Fit Club. This year I felt like jumping ALL in. I was excited when I got my approval for the HOT YOGA at the Tangerine Hot Power Yoga. I have been doing yoga for years but it’s always been old lady classes or cheap donation classes. And let me tell you, this was a true VIP treatment. As I was getting close to the location I noticed a tangerine circle across the street and without my glasses on, I knew it was the place. I walked in and was greeted with open arms and paws! There was the cutest little pup named «Charlie» there. The owner/​yoga instructor Tamara told us he just got his fur trimmed and that’s why he was looking extra dashing. And of course, I am always happy to see Peter D. even if he pointed me to the Men’s dressing room instead of the ladies!
I did make it to the dressing room which was intimate. The lockers were tricky but everyone helped share the secret. It’s a four digit code. You pick the code and turn the knob and then enter the code again to open.
We were all getting nervous for class. I even drank vats of water to prepare but the bahn mi I ate beforehand might have not been the best dinner choice.
We all were trying to see who were the yogis to follow their lead. I placed my towel on the mat hoping for better grip and to soak up the seat. I think this is really a two towel process; one for the mat and another for the large amounts of sweat that occur when I work out.
Tamara was calm and serene in her directions. She was fully aware of every student. She helped with poses and blocks. She gave some strong words of encouragement when she saw some students were losing hope. And I know personally she, handed me a nice cold towel at the cool down period. I must have been beet red!
I liked that she used so many poses that I was familiar with like downward dog, pigeon and warrior to name a few. I felt like I worked hard but never felt like I had to stop. I will definitely be returning. And the watermelon juice refresher at the end was an added bonus.

Really beautiful space — small but they make the most of it. I like that they don’t have a mirror in the room so that you aren’t focusing on anyone else but yourself. The music choice for the class was a great mix of typical yogi music and more contemporary stuff that I would totally blast while going for a run.
Other things I loved:
1. The free tangerines when you check in (they are on the counter and look like they are there just for decoration but according to the receptionist they are for you to eat.
2. The little friendly doggie that didn’t bark, not event once
3. The clean changing room and free lockers (although I got one that didn’t seem to be working which made it a little tricky to figure out. Once I switched over to another one it was a breeze to follow the directions on the inside of the locker)
4. The stickers on the floor for the mat placement was indeed a genius idea — i’ve been to too many classes where students are left to their devices to set up and it doesn’t always turn out so great.
5. The watermelon water at the end of class
6. The quality of the mat and towels
7. The location of the class (for me the proximity to brooklyn fare was perfect so that I could grab a quick bite to eat after from their prepared foods case) but there are plenty of great eateries nearby in this part of town.
8. And last, but certainly not least, the instructor /​owner, who had a great speaking voice and kept you moving throughout the entire class.

I really appreciate that Unilocal puts together a Fit Club series to help us all stay in shape, meet other cool Unilocalers and introduce us to new businesses (and offer FREE exercise classes) that we wouldn’t know about otherwise. Thanks to Peter D. and all the staff at Tangerine for a wonderful Friday night sweat it out detox (before you retox all over again).
Tangerine has just been open for 6 weeks and in a very convenient location right by many trains in Downtown Brooklyn. The studio is beautiful and very sleek. Changing rooms are clean and lockers that already have combos on them (so don’t worry if you forgot your lock at home). There are two beautiful water faucets in the lobby to fill up your water bottle. The women’s bathroom is spacious .You can also purchase coconut water and pressed juices also. Yoga mats are EKO no-​slip mats, very high quality and exactly what you need when you will be sweating. Blocks, and belts on hand for adjusting your poses.
For this event, we also enjoyed COMPLIMENTARY clementines, almonds, and watermelon juice after the class.
The studio itself can fit at least 40 people and is well heated. You will feel the heat immediately when you step inside. But heat is great, it allows you to stretch your muscles more and you will get in some serious cardio. Small heart attacks now to avoid a big one later
The owner, Tamara, was very nice, welcoming and she also taught the class. The class was 60 minutes and we went through many poses including sun salutations, warrior 2 and 3, mountain pose, tree pose, etc. Sometimes, it was a bit hard to follow the instruction, but don’t worry, just look around the room and things will come together easily. And besides, it is hot yoga, the mere fact you are still in the room is what counts!
A few things that I thought would’ve worked better for me included:
–THERE ARE NO SHOWERS HERE, so please plan accordingly (I am someone that sweats a lot, technical term is hyperhydrosis, so I def need a shower after any hot yoga workout)
–NO MIRRORS IN THE STUDIO, now I know some studios just don’t have them for their reasons, however, I do like mirrors, so I can work on adjusting my poses and to improve on my alignment and to see areas that I need work on…
–It would’ve been nice if they sold some electrolyte mixes, would help with all the electrolyte loss. Sodium and potassium loss in extreme heat can cause symptoms like headaches, nausea, and also cramping. I have experienced this in the past, as I have been practising yoga for almost 10 years, so would be nice to have it on hand. Good thing I had a pack with me…
Overall, a very decent studio, with great staff, warm environment and a great workout. And also, Charlie, the resident beautiful Maltese was so adorable and friendly. He is just irresistible.
Really really awesome to finally attend a Unilocal Fit Club series event. Absoltuely loves it. Come check out this studio, you won’t be disappointed!
