We discovered Java Jan’s a year ago and it has been a regular stop for us ever since. Jan is great. As well as her husband Gene, and the coffee is top notch. Very friendly and hospitable. Sooooo much better than Starbucks!!!

Java Jan is exactly the kind of small business that politicians and talking heads speak so highly of, and for good reason. I stopped into Java Jan on a lazy Sunday afternoon to be greated by Jan herself — perhaps one of the nicest and friendliest businesspeople I’ve ever met. I’ve been to a lot of local coffee shops over the past year. Each is unique in some way. Java Jan isn’t necessarily the place to go if you want to engage in coffee snobbery(as her selection of different drinks and roasts ins’t the biggest I’ve ever seen), nor is it the place to go if you want to sit with your laptop for hours(seating is limited inside, but there is a very nice patio out front). Java Jan is the place to go if you want a good cup of coffee with a smile. It’s the kind of business that neighborhoods want and need. If you’re in Old Dublin and you’re craving some caffeine, for the sake of it all, don’t go to the Starbucks across the street, come to Java Jan.

My disdain for the big brand coffee shop down the street led me to suggest Jan’s as an afternoon meeting place. In I went to be greeted by the pleasant and accommodating, Jan herself, who was eager to brew or blend me up anything I wanted. There isn’t much sitting room inside, but she offered to cool down the conference space upstairs for my meeting, if needed. We opted for the first of two, shaded tables on the front patio. The upstairs space is also the place for a happy hour that’s not such a cheerful hour for most. Between the hours of 7 — 9 a.m. if you come in, say hi to Jan, and stay around for awhile your latte is $ 2.50! My iced chai tea was lacking in spiciness, but was still pretty refreshing on the 90-degree summer day. Java Jan is quaint, local and an all around place to pick up a jolt of java and a smile.

Java Jan’s humble Italian coffee house on South High Street may not appear as mighty as the Starbucks on Bridge Street. But Java Jan’s quality coffee, superior taste, affordability, and customer experience gives her a sling and a stone against the Goliath of the coffee industry. With steady aim, perhaps Java Jan’s could reinvent a coffee niche that is free from hype and mediocrity. It’s difficult to find a coffee shop that truly cares about the well being and satisfaction of their customers. Instead, it seems that most large coffee chains have sacrificed product quality and store atmosphere for more sales, more money, and more fat/sugar in each coffee drink. «Would you like fries with that?» has become a parallel to «Would you like whip cream and sugar slathered across your coffee flavor?» In the United States, the hype of fast-food coffee has been steadily increasing. In Dublin, the Starbucks on Bridge Street towers over the independent, community-oriented businesses that hide in it’s shadows, as it bustles with business simply due to advertisements, and name-brand recognition. Unfortunately, many Starbucks customers may never experience the meaningful benefits of coffee; its potential to bring together, brighten, and catalyze gladness within community. I have long awaited an alternative option in Dublin to the Starbucks on Bridge Street; an option for a quality coffee and a meaningful coffee house experience. Java Jan has provided me this second option. Her coffee house provides locally roasted coffee, a high-quality espresso machine, talented barristas, latte art, and a strong focus on the Dublin community’s art and society. Jan is a woman revolutionized by coffee; she always always has a smile on, and is excited to make a personalized latte that will put a smile on anyone who steps inside her coffee house. If you’ve read this post, I want to challenge you. Next time you crave coffee and you’re thinking about getting some Starbucks: Go to Java Jan’s or support an independent coffee house. You’ll save a little bit of money, but will be supporting your community and future culture in a large way.

I love to try the local coffee shops whenever I get a chance. Java Jan Gourmet Coffee recently opened in Dublin, not far from where I live. I judge a coffee shop by their lattes, my favorite«high maintenance» coffee. Her latte was wonderful; way better and less expensive than that infamous coffee store chain. The ambience was warm, and you actually feel like you’re at home, rather than at a coffee store. There is an upstairs room where you can sit down and converse with friends, use the wi-fi, and forget the stresses of the day. I will be back. Update:(Aug. 2012). Last year Jan closed the Dublin shop and moved downtown next to Columbus Commons. Her coffee shop is bigger and they have grab & go food for a quick lunch.

Stopped by here to grab a cup of coffee. I loved it!!! The place is very warm and cozy, and extremely friendly. I had a cup of dark roast coffee and it was wonderful! The prices are very reasonable. I will be going back here for sure. Plus they have a punch card, if you buy five drinks you get one free!!!

Stopped by Our Cupcakery to pick up a treat on my way to the airport and noticed the new Java Jan’s open next door. The two businesses are open so you can walk between to get your baked goods and coffee in one stop. The owners are sweet and were happy to discuss their business and coffee with us. They have an assortment of drink specials(from Mint Oreo Cookie to Buckeye) and they told us to give us an idea of what we wanted in a drink and they would make it for us. The coffee hit the spot and they even had a miniature cornhole game that they let us enjoy. My friend and I will definitely be going back especially to participate in their weekly drawing for a free pound of coffee.
