As a native Detroiter, I am quite particular about my coney islands, and I have to say that the Original Coney Island on Superior Street is very good indeed. They even have Vernors and Boston Coolers(more Detroit favorites!). The décor appears not to have been changed for decades, which gives the place quite a bit of charm. The prices are very reasonable, the staff is always friendly, and if you go there often enough to fill up the punch card, you can eventually get a free coney… who could ask for anything more?

On our way back to Minneapolis after a wonderful weekend on the North Shore, we wanted to eat breakfast that wasn’t oatmeal from a Jetboil. Sam and I both share a fondness for little diners, and Unilocal was giving us a lot of options. One item that grabbed my interest was Coney Island’s Shore Breakfast, which includes eggs, hashbrowns, toast… and fried cod. As much as I enjoy bacon, I also like fish. So Coney Island it was. It’s one of the older existing businesses in Duluth, though it was remodeled a few years ago. For such a narrow space, it doesn’t feel dingy or divey at all. There is some kitschy shit on the walls, but not a deal breaker. I did love the trophy of cell phones lining one part of the wall; they were arranged in chronological order. Seeing a cell phone the size of… three iPhones is amazing. The Shore Breakfast is a nod to the times when Duluth had an active dock life. The cod was frozen previously but fried well so it wasn’t too sodden or overcooked on the inside. Combined with two eggs over easy and their hashbrowns, it made for a great diner breakfast. We’ll be back the next time we’re on the North Shore.

This restaurant had a great atmosphere and food but what was even better was the service! The cashier was upbeat fun and very attentive us! Defiantly will visit again!

As a restaurant manager, I know how busy a kitchen can get with a full dining room, today’s visit there was a restaurant full of about 30 heads. So, I ordered only a cheeseburger knowing that anything else would be too much of a wait. I waited an upwards of 45 minutes just to realize that people arriving after myself were being served. Lack of management, and chaos runs about those establishment. Not recommended!

Honestly not terribly impressed. The chicken wrap was full of coleslaw that was lacking in taste. Also the table hadn’t been wiped down since the last guests(which we had been standing in there for 10 minutes before sitting down at this vacant table). I think if they were better staffed it would have been easier for them. They did however remedy a situation of a mistaken order with my friend which was nice. The second plate they sent out was a much higher quality. Overall a decent option but there are other places.

It is good but by far not ½ as good as the«other«place. The coneys were about as good as i could make at home but were nothing amazing. the fries are ok. So ya its good but the other place beats this in every way.

Went to this one many years ago and it was awesome. Went today and it was terrible. Gas station hot dogs are significantly better and much cheaper! I’m pretty sure the«coney sauce» is from a can(which could be described as terrible at best). Super disappointed.

I used to live in Duluth and ate here at least 3 times a week for lunch as I worked in the tech center. I loved the homemade soup and the lady was always super friendly. I went back today, 8 years later and I didn’t leave feeling the service or the food. The inside was also extremely dirty, our table looked like it wasn’t wiped down all day. I’ll most likely never return.

My mom and I were walking down superior street, and saw hot dogs sizzling on a grill in the window. We couldn’t resist! Great dogs, and great service! Defiantly a great place to stop for a quick lunch.

Better than the Deluxe by far, which looks and feels like a homeless shelter. Original has style. Good breakfast. Decent staff. Awesome hash browns. Cheap prices. What more do you need?

My wife and I recently stayed in a hotel only two blocks away and we ate breakfast here every day. If you’re looking for good home-made food, friendly service, and local atmosphere, this is the place for you. Although we were obviously tourists, we were welcomed into the very friendly group of local customers who seemed to know each other. This is obviously a neighborhood hangout and it was great fun listening to the banter while we enjoyed our meals. Next time we’re in Duluth, we’ll stop here for lunch too!

I literally dream about this place. I took my girlfriend here(we are from Las Vegas) and she loves it as. As a native Duluthian I find it impossible for this place not to hit the spot. The coney sauce is very tasty, everything is freshly prepared. They have good frys and euros. I make the stop here every trip. The only reason for four stars is the past couple of years every time I go in there has been shady people around the front and it kills the family vibe. I’ll keep going though and I highly recommend you to go as well.

Awful, uncomfortable booths. Dirty people sitting around(all day?) waiting for shelters to open. Confusing on how to order something as simple as diet coke as the prices are the same for bottle or fountain, but no refills if you don’t get the fountain. Advertises wifi but it didn’t work and the people working behind the counter acted like they didn’t even know what wifi was. Go to McDonalds instead… screw the ‘support local business’ crap.

Awful service. Awful wait times for anything. Wrong food when it came out after an hour of waiting. Dirty dishes, dirty utensils. I used to come here every weekend with my girlfriend(now wife), and used to recommend it to friends/visitors. I will never visit this place again, not will I suggest you do either. Please, spend your money, and a lot of your time, somewhere else.

A group of us came here for Breakfast and I must say our experience wasn’t the best. First of all the cashier was super incompetent and couldn’t get our order right, rang things into the register wrong, couldn’t figure out the right amount of change even after we told them what we should get back, it was a mess. It took 15 minutes of standing around to get them to figure out a substitute for onion rings instead of fries… pathetic. A couple behinds us walked about because it was taking so long. Then to make matters worse, you only get 1 refil on a pop… seriously that stuff costs you like 10 cents! The food was okay but nothing to write home about. I don’t think I will be back.

My wife and I stopped in for breakfast during a long weekend in Duluth. The place is small and decorated with old-tyme american memorabilia like a dusty café on route 66. The place has been around for nearly 100 years and the memorabilia traces through the history of that time. The food is very standard classic american diner style eats. Our waiter was friendly, the coffee was hot and the service was prompt. The servings are not as bountiful as they are at Uncle Louis Café, but we left quite satisfied. We stayed just up the street so this made a fantastic walkable breakfast option. I wish we had time to try their lunch menu! Next time, I suppose.

Unlike most of Duluth(where the culinary scene falls pathetically short), Coney Island sells a solid dog and a really good burger! The Good: they sell a really good Chicago Dog. The Bad: their dogs lack the pop you get from a natural casing. Also, unlike most première dog shops, Coney Island lacks variety or an original dog — like an wild rice dog or walleye dog. While the upgrades the new owners made have made the place more appealing and the food quality has gone up — it still needs to find its pop before it can play with the big dogs.

Once upon a time, a young Greek made the treacherous journey from the Twin Cities to Duluth, heeding the call of pioneering Duluthians hungry for hot dogs. The year was 1921. 90 years later, the Original Coney Island, is still selling dogs, but new owners have made a few upgrades recently. The vintage appearance(even the original ceiling) have been left intact, but the interior has been spruced up, and the walls decorated with memorabilia. But perhaps the biggest change, is that after 90 years, Original has joined the ‘major leagues’ of hot doggers, by adding Vienna Beef products to their menu. Vienna, from Chicago, is unquestionably the king of hot dog suppliers, the preferred dog of weenie wizards like moi. Minnesota Burger Report Kawikamedia and his burger posse stopped into Original recently, and raved about the authenticity of the natural casing Chicago style dog, adorned with all the right condiments, including the trademark neon green relish, nestled in the appropriate poppy seed bun. They also sampled the skinless Vienna with Original’s coney sauce, and the Italian beef sandwich as well. For those unfortunate readers who have not had Italian(or Chicago) Beef, it’s tantamount to a garlicy French dip, and is goooooooooooooood. For extra joy, have them dip your buns into the au jus. You’ll be glad you did.
