Chocolate! Chocolate everywhere! This cute little store is tucked right between the Boys and Girls Club and Fiesta Mexicana. When you walk in they have a little rack of sale items on the right and a beautiful display of truffles right in front. Along the walls they have all sorts of sets of chocolate as well as individual bars of dark, milk, with nuts, etc. They also sell hot chocolate! My mom and I decided to get a box of six to share and decided on two of each of the rose, espresso, and plain chocolate. They were all really yummy! The rose had a very delicate taste but the flavor of the flower hits your tongue at the end. I enjoyed the espresso one quite a bit because coffee and chocolate together are magic so I’m definitely going to get that one again. The plain chocolate was good because it was DARK; none of that sissy milk stuff ;) I’ll definitely be back for more at some point, perhaps when it starts getting cold and I can order a hot chocolate?

Have you ever wondered what Heaven might taste like? This place was outstanding. It was priced much more reasonably than I expected, and the staff member working was happy to give us information on how the items were made and make suggestions. She even tossed in some free samples. If you like chocolate, or enjoy being happy, you owe it to yourself to go in here.

This was on my Alex’s list to do, and well worth it for this chocolate. This local chocolate was silky smooth. They had samples of chocolate covered kettle potato chips, they were really really good. One lady asked if we’d also like to same other chocolates and sample their special hot chocolate, all absolutely sinful. I took a picture of the two girls bagging those up while there was only one person helping one man ahead of us that seem to be tasting and buying up everything. She took the time to wrap up every glass jar and every box of chocolate special. I guess why i am mentioning this is because the line was building up. We had places to go and things to see, being on our vacation. Holiday time, im sure they are extra busy, thus the reason they need an extra person to help with sales, this is why i took it down to 4 stars. If we are in town again, we will stop by and get our chocolate fix!

Absolutely thrilled with this local chocolatier! The goodies I brought home were a delicious hit, and it always feels good to support someone local versus the big chain chocolate companies. I can’t wait to order some holiday goodies!

Very good chocolate with excellent customer service. I got the snakebite which was super super good. My friend got the salted caramel, which is made with honey, and she said she prefers classic salted caramel to this one, but that she would be willing to come back and try more gloves another time. They also sell chocolates to many of the stores on Main Street.

Great small local, artisinal chocolatier. From the awards on the wall, Animas Chocolate Company seems to be getting some attention for their quality sweets. The staff was super friendly. They hand create some standard flavors(mint chocolate, salted caramels), and funky creations like a dark chocolate malt filled heaven and«snake bite» with white chocolate shell with cranberry, dark chocolate, and chili. If you’re used to grocery store prices for«chocolate», you may feel some sticker shock. The truffles and speciality chocolates run around $ 2.50 each if you buy them individually, a little cheaper if you buy in bulk, which really is on par with most other quality chocolatiers. Huge fun or this little shop in Durango.

Can I tell you the truth? I like chocolate. And I really, really like good chocolate. It was my misfortune, and my joy, when I discovered this chocolatier only two blocks from my hotel during a recent trip to Durango. The Animas Chocolate Company is in a small, free-standing building along Main Street, or Route 550, as you head north from the historic downtown. There’s not much to distinguish the building, but once you go inside — oh boy. A very nice woman named Julia was kind enough to give me a sample of hot chocolate made with the chocolate bits they sell — OMG. Maybe the best hot chocolate I’ve ever had in my life. I didn’t purchase that particular chocolate mix because I’m hoping I don’t feel the need for hot chocolate to warm winter nights for a long, long time. I did try a couple other samples, mostly dark chocolate, and they were wonderful. One thing that got me very interested was potato chips coated in either milk or dark chocolate. Have you ever eaten a chocolate bar with sea salt? It is incredibly good. And friends, let it be known — I like chocolate, and I like potato chips. Who knew you could combine the two? But, I said to Julia, potato chips will never survive being packed and carried back to the Midwest. The truth was, I thought the potato chips would not survive the two block walk back to my hotel, so I exercised great restraint and passed them by. Here’s what I bought and took back. A chocolate bark with salt; River Bottom Toffee, which is milk chocolate and salted toffee; and River Bottom Espresso, which is dark chocolate and espresso beans. SOFREAKIN’ GOOD! It’s easy to drive by this business, so you should put the address in your GPS and make sure you find this building. I’m reminded of an old TV slogan: «Hard to find, tough to beat.» This is the real deal, folks. If you drive out of Durango going north, you’ll pass by the Animas Chocolate Company. Make sure you stop by – your taste buds will be happy you did. One piece of really good chocolate is worth much more than a handful of Hershey bars.
