This chubby’s is so disappointing! Go to the one in Raleigh, it is infinitely better. I got two beans and rice tacos and the beans were super dry and the cheese wasn’t melted the way it was at the Raleigh one! It was very bland and didn’t hit the spot. Also the staff was so grumpy compared to the friendly faces at the Raleigh chubby’s. I ended up throwing away the leftovers.

Great tacos and burritos at a fair price. A perfect combination. My father ate 3 yesterday!!! And he doesn’t even eat this type of food! Chubby has won him over though

I have visited Chubby’s a few times now. I love their tacos. They are authentic and good. I have also tried their flautas which were good as well! Meals come with rice and beans and a drink. They have a salsa bar with many options. All the ones I have tried have been very good. Their service is relatively quick, although this isn’t «fast food.» It’s always a solid option.

Great affordable amerexican. Get the carnitas in your favorite form with the tomatillo salsa and you won’t be disappointed.

Chubby’s has changed enough about the way they prepare their food that we no longer go here. At all. :(. Used to be so tasty and gradually we both realized that we didn’t even enjoy the taste of anything we ordered very much. Now, the quesadillas taste like they have been cooked on the grill with no oil, leaving the tortilla hard and difficult to chew. Not very tasty. We got a shrimp quesadilla(full 12 in tortilla) that had three shrimps on it. Not jumbo. Many rude wait staff also contribute to the decline in our enjoyment of the atmosphere, aside from all the broken booth seats that are barely still holding any stuffing inside. The thing that we still like are the chips and salsa but we never order them because that’s not enough for a meal. Wish it were still like the good ol days…

Amazing food, usually good service but this time not so much. I called in my order and when I arrived the cashier was very unpleasant. Service comes first and it should always be A1 no matter what!

After seeing commercials for margaritas on TV, I was certainly in the mood for one and what better place to get one than a Mexican restaurant. My roommate and I decided to try out Chubby’s, since we’ve heard great things and we live so close I can’t believe I’ve never been here yet before. First things first, they don’t sell alcohol here. I was a bit disappointed that I couldn’t get my refreshing margarita, so definitely keep this in mind if you’re looking to enjoy one with your Mexican food on a nice night outside. Despite this disappointment, we decided to stay and try out the food. This place is quick because you order at the register and then pick you’re own place to sit and they bring out the food to you. The inside is small, but it’s big enough that there was plenty of seating on a Friday night. There’s a few tables outside so make sure to choose this option if it’s a warm night. There’s a lot of taco options here, so I figured this is what they’re known for so I must try them for my first visit. I chose the Baja tilapia and the grilled shrimp tacos. Be sure to make it a combo if you’re hungry for dinner, because this adds rice, beans, chips, and a drink for just $ 2.99 more so it’s really worth it. They have a salsa bar to go along with the chips, so check this out and try out a few of their salsas. They were all very good! I would highly recommend the Baja tilapia taco. I liked this one much better than the grilled shrimp. The tacos were packed with fish, and surprisingly very filling. The fish was certainly flavorful. The chipotle mayo sauce was on both of my tacos and was really good. No complaints about the Baja tilapia, but the grilled shrimp almost had too much sauce and pico that it made the tortilla super soggy(or this specific tortilla was just not cooked enough). The second I picked it up to try to eat it like a taco, everything fell through the middle of the flour tortilla and turned into a huge mess on my plate. I was pleased with my first experience here at Chubby’s. The tacos were good and the prices were fair. I would say it’s not the best Mexican I’ve tried in the area. However, it is a great option if you’re looking for a quick meal or a new great take out option.

Stopped by Chubbys tonight to try a new spot in South Durham. I am constantly trying to find new hidden finds in South Durham instead of making the trip to downtown or Chapel Hill every time I want to go out to eat. Chubbys had the novelty feel of a hidden gem with the walk up counter for ordering, paper plates and equal balance of dine in or take out. With a menu variety including flautas, tacos, burritos, quesadillas, and tortas, there was a little bit of everything for Mexican fans. I went for two tacos and made it a combo(great prices) where you get chips, beans, rice, and a drink on the side. The chips were a nice crunchy and salty and with the combo of their salsa bar gave a great start that I was looking for. Go for the Chubbys house salsa for a nice medium heat or the salsa verde for a milder palate. The tacos themselves were a little heavy, carnitas was purely meat and tortilla, while the Baka shrimp had much more flavor with a sauce that is also served on the other seafood options. Tacos were decent but not the best I have ever had, may have gone better with a margarita. Too bad no alcohol is served. Won’t be a regular but will keep it in mind for my lazy dinners!

Is there such a thing as high quality Mexican takeout? Do not think Taco Bell folks! Chubby’s is the best Mexican food out there and it is quick and easy to order and pick up(they do have tables if you would like to sit and eat). I have never had anything there that wasn’t a 10 out of 10.

A generous four stars. I’d sooner go to NanaTaco or La Vaquita, but Chubby’s is also good. I recommend the chorizo tacos, and the carnitas or carne asade as close seconds. Tacos are a little too much corn tortilla and onion for me, but the quality is great, especially combined with a nice salsa bar. Rice and beans are better than average and make for a super filling meal with the complimentary chips at about ten bucks. Ambiance felt like a weird old ski lodge in a weird old shopping center, but at least the bathroom was clean.

Really solid salsa bar and good prices but that’s about it. Used to go to Bandito’s when I was younger and was totally fine with its completely average tex-mex offerings, but the two times I’ve visited Chubbys have been equally disappointing. Borderline inedible meats, cheese dip that was the consistency of water, guac with too-hard avocados and the blandest beans and rice in town. Seriously if it wasn’t for their salsa choices, Chubbys might be the worst taqueria I’ve ever eaten at

Gonza Tacos y Tequila was my favorite taco place in the Triangle before tonight. And while Chubby’s can’t hold a candle to Gonza’s on the ambiance front, their tacos hold the edge on the authentic scale. And what more can you ask of a taco joint than really great tacos? So far I’ve only had the chicken tinga. Amazing. Melt-in-your-mouth pulled chicken, so juicy and spicy over two tender corn tortillas. Fresh onion and cilantro. Rice and refried beans topped with melted queso fresco were very tasty as well. Complimentary chips were fresh and crisp. I tried most of the salsas at the complimentary salsa bar. Nice range of spiciness, but kind of a mixed bag as far as flavor for me. I really liked some, others seemed to be missing something or made from mediocre ingredients. Sure wish I could have grabbed a cold Corona from their drink fridge, but unfortunately they have no alcohol license. Maybe next time I’ll eat outside and fill a water bottle with beer.

Normally, I hate eating in restaurants with names that dictate what will happen upon eating their food. But Chubby’s food is worth the name and the prescience. Goddamn is it good, and goddamn would I risk chubbing out.

I want to add a disclaimer that I am not Hispanic and do not know what true«authentic» Mexican food is. All I know is that this stuff was delicious and fit the bill for what I assume is ‘real’ Mexican food. I have loved Chipotle but have never really thought that was ‘real,’ and so have been on the search for something similar to a Taqueria I used to love going to when I lived in San Francisco. That said, this was really great. My husband got a chicken taco and a caritas taco, both of which he said were wonderful. I got a caritas flauta, and I absolutely loved it! The quality of that pork was perfectly balanced between meaty and just slightly greasy/fatty. The sides of rice and beans complemented the meal very well as well, and the chips that came with our combos were well made. The building is an inornate location in its shopping square, sandwiched between a dominos and an Italian place. Seating is casual and not terribly spacious, though not cozy by any means, and when we were there the line to order was almost out the front door. There is outdoor seating as well. My one complaint is more about the building than the food. There seemed to be flies everywhere, indoors and out. We ate outdoors and so we kind of expected that, but they were noticeable indoors as well. More annoying than anything to spend the majority of your meal waving your hand over your food to keep them off. Would definitely order the food again to fill that Mexican food craving, but will probably order to go.

Oh man, my last review does NOT do Chubby’s justice [and yes, I’m still calling them Chubby’s!] Tonight I ordered the grilled shrimp tacos and the spicy carne asada taco, wow! Flavorful, CHEAP, delicious salsa bar and you get free chips with every order. The building itself is dingy and the seating is sparse but service is good and hey, they’ve even got patio seating! When they make the«official» name change(from Chubby’s Tacos to Guacamaya Fresh Mex) they will ALSO make a building change, across the Woodcroft shopping center and neighbor to Yamazushi Japanese Cuisine). I think with the building change, it will confirm this location as not only a four star for food, but a place you want to spend an extended amount of time, dress nicely for and possibly even order a drink. DEALCHASERS: they also participate with the«Stealz» app [you get a free *little* queso just with a check-in AND they always have buy-one get-one coupons in the Go, Play, Save books.

I am a sucker for hole in the wall mom and pop stores and this place definitely delivered! Affordable and tasty. Echoing prior reviews the grilled tilapia taco is delicious. Good taste, fish is well cooked. I also tried the spicy tinga chicken tacos which were just okay. Multiple complimentary salsas also available, some bland some awesome Great for a quick delicious bite; def not a classy establishment but will be back! .

Okay let’s just put it out there, the food here is great. The food is a damn 5 for sure. No doubt. The building itself makes me give it a 4. This is a great place for take-out and if you want to dine in there’s a few tables for that as well. However the place is a bit beat up and all the seats have been ripped up and taped back together. It’s not comfy to sit on at all. But back to the food! Tacos are so yummy. The chorizo is tender and yet cripsy, heaps of onion and cilantro top it off. Add some sauce on there and you’re golden. The seafood tacos are amazing, the fish and shrimp come out so crispy, hot, and flaky with cabbage in a sauce akin to cole slaw. They have a little sauce bar with various sauces that range in spicyness. Unfortunately I’m afraid to show my face at this place again because on my way I out accidentally threw our trash in a trash can without a trash bag… right as the girl was coming up to put a new bag in. Oops.

After shopping at The Streets at Southpoint, friends and I went looking for a cheap«hole in the wall» and lo and behold we found Chubbys tucked into a nearby shopping center. Seating was limited on a busy night and their booths are run down with tears all over but you forget all about it once your food arrives. For 8 bucks, I ordered the spicy taco’s combo which came with beans, rice and a drink. The meat was spicy and tender. Nachos not only come with a salsa bar of 6+ choices but the nachos are also bottomless and I came back for several helpings. Great place for the price and convenience. To our delight, Chubby’s also has several locations in Durham. Will always remember Chubby’s for my mexican fix!

Food is an absolute 5. This place is awesome, and for a great price. Service is a 3. Never had any negative experiences so to speak, but the two times I’ve been there I felt I was bothering the two girls at the cash registers, which is weird for a customer to feel. My first time I had questions about the menu(what’s barbacoa) and didn’t feel like the sharpest tool in the shed from the look she gave me. the second trip the sauces were out and after standing there for a few seconds I actually chose to sit back down rather than ask them to refill them. If there was one thing this place could improve on it would be making people feel welcome walking in the door. But the food tastes amazing so I’ll keep coming back despite that.

I’m a little torn when it comes to Mexican food around here. I wish I could give Chubby’s 5-stars like many folks, but it just doesn’t live up to my Mexican«mom and pop’s» place down my old street in San Diego. Hard not to be biased, when you are Mexico’s neighbor. But I will say, I was happy to see carne asada tacos available on the menu. I haven’t found anything with carne asada since I got to Durham. I was so thrilled, I ordered 2 spicy carne asada tacos. They were very spicy alright, but my first thought was… Where’s the sour cream, and guacamole?! Do I have to pay extra for that? The tacos were good, but dry as a result. I do plan to go back and try something else on their menu. Since Chubby’s seems to be pretty popular around here, I’m hoping to fall in love with some of their other selections.
