I needed help with a knitting project I was working on and searched for a place that sold yarn and had classes. I was really excited to visit this store and walked in wearing shorts, t-shirt, and birks. I should have felt at «cozy» with others knitting liberal academic hippy types. I was greeted pleasantly with an offer of help finding something but rudely interrupted by a customer who couldn’t find or get the sales lady to make it magically appear for her. Some special dansko shoes(which they have a ton of if you like the $$$ style). Right then I should have known what to expect. Included in their inventory is respectable selection of flowy cotton clothes in muted tones, Crabtree and Evelyn smelly stuff(again over priced but fun to peruse), scarves and quirky reading spectacles — fun. I went to the back of the store and the wall of yarn — oh goody! Two ladies stood alertly around a table chatting knit stuff — I rejoiced«my knitting peeps!» — uh not so much: snobby & pretentious oozed in response to my giddiness. «How can I help!» quipped one of the ladies insincerely. I asked for help with a project I was working on — the response: «Have you heard of a website… .» Then … nothing. I stood around awkwardly for a moment and quickly realized I was not of their caliber of knitting customer — I wasn’t dressed the part I guess: academic clog wearing Duke-y type! This is why I buy stuff online and look up you tube videos? At the risk of sounding bitter: Shops owned by older women — likely funded from divorce settlements or overpaid college administrators — should instead fund exclusive and private clubs to keep out us Ragamuffins. It would save all of us a lot of aggravation!

SOOOO rude. We were walking up to the store and had coffee cups. We’re planning to put them down either outside or finish them outside. The snooty lady who worked there didn’t even give us a chance to put them down before she rudely told us to put them down. There were five of us; each one of us thought they were both so rude and unwelcoming. We would NEVER shop there again.

I visited Cozy to start brainstorming holiday gift ideas. Lots of clothes and shoes(mostly for an older set). A nice selection for children(stuffed toys, adorable knitwear). Odds and ends(lotions, windchimes). A wonderful variety of journals and albums. If you browse deep enough, there may be an unusual thing or two to catch your eye; in particular, I fell for an appropriately«cozy» pair of arm-warmers with faux buttons and the cookie stamp sets which allow you to imprint a design onto your sugar cookie dough.

Cozy is a similar store to the just-a-few-doors-down Vaguely Reminiscent, but more spacious, with friendlier staff, and with a few private parking spaces. Cozy(I adore that name!) is full of clothing, shoes, jewelry, and gifts(some practical, others purely novel). I got a great business card holder here in the bargain bin for $ 5. They also carry Glam purse hooks, pillboxes, and journals, among about a bajillion other things. They also have a decent selection of home goods. As I previously alluded, I prefer Cozy to Vaguely Reminiscient because I felt completely welcome here and it isn’t nearly as crowded and just crammed full of kitsch. Cozy certainly boasts its fair share of totally cheesy things I’d never buy, but, hey, it takes all kinds, and Cozy’s got something for everyone.

The clothes here are great, but quite high-priced. They only have sales twice a year. Anyone except a wealthy Duke student or employee will be priced out. As for the other stuff, it’s the typical made-in-China pseudo-hip, cutesy gift items. Nothing special. Parking is tight and the store is overloaded with merchandise… The best thing about Cozy is the yarn. Wish they had much much more of it – and fewer chochkes. More yarn, people, more yarn!

The name«cozy» fits this place to a tee — they sell a wide selection of Dansko shoes and clothes that seem flowy and comfortable. In addition, they have some bags and housewares and a section of soaps, lotions and body scrubs — with brands like Archipelago Botanicals, Olivina Napa Valley, and Deep Steep. And what’s the coziest thing you can think of? Why, yarn, of course — and they have a whole wall of the store devoted to yarn and knitting.
