Patanjali’s Place

Jessica V’s Sunday morning Ashtanga class is exactly what I have been searching for in Durham for years. Jessica is an amazing teacher, she keeps you moving, focused, and getting better every class. Her cues are consistent (I hate when the instructor forgets where they are halfway through a movement) and she finds a way to get everyone in the best positions for their level. It’s a great way to start off your day!
The other classes here are good, but I was so thrilled to have an excellent instructor-​led Ashtanga class in the neighborhood.

Having just moved to the area for LA, I have been looking to find a friendly yoga center. We stumbled across PP and took advantage of their first class free offer. We have been back quite a few times since.
I have only done vinyasa and power classes so I can’t comment on any others, but Natalie the teacher we have been to most is great — she’s super friendly and offers really good adjustments. I find the classes challenging and they push me out of my comfort zone.
My two slight nags are
1. I think the drop in rate is a little high — but there are good class packages
2. I don’t like the new addition of carpet in one of the studios!

Patanjali’s Place is a gem in Durham for yoga! I moved to NC last year from CA and it was a struggle to find a decent yoga studio since I was so spoiled back home. I tried a few different places before a friend recommended I go here. I love it! The space is very calming as it’s so open and has lots of natural light. When the new rooms are finished (currently under construction), I’m sure they’ll be beautiful… yay for cork floors!
I usually stick to the vinyasa/​power classes and have never had a bad experience. Jessica is my favorite teacher but they are all great– experienced and mindful. If it’s your first time, they will really make you feel welcome… and your first class is free! As a student, paying for yoga can be challenging, so I also appreciate the donation class on Sundays. Overall great studio!

I’ve taken classes from Jessica and Natalie and have really enjoyed them both. The space is great and Patanjali’s does a good job of creating a welcoming environment that isn’t intimidating.

I love this place! I am a bit hesitant to write a review because I don’t want my favorite classes to become crowded, but I suppose that hoarding good things is not in the spirit of yoga or Unilocal.:)
I have attended several of the Vinyasa flow classes here and they are both super-​challenging and a great learning experience. I really feel like the teachers take the time to explain alignment and technique so that I can develop good habits and advance in my practice. When I started here I was really a beginner but the way the classes were presented was really inclusive and the teachers kept me from feeling embarrassed by my wobbling and lack of «yoga vocabulary.»
I guess if I had any negatives it would be that sometimes I feel bad spending money to work out when I could just as easily go for a run outside or go to the free classes at Duke. But, I recently attended a few classes elsewhere and it really drove home to me how great the teaching is at Patanjali’s — to me it is worth the money! For financial reasons, I also really like the donation-​based class on Sundays (Jessica) — although sometimes it gets crowded because it is getting really popular, and so I have been liking and enjoying the Tuesday or Thursday night classes, which are a lot more challenging (Natalie– now moving to Wednesday).

Love this place! My son participated in the ZenKids camp-​he loved it and wants to go back next summer-​wish we lived closer, but it was well worth the hour commute! I highly recommend!

Patanjali’s Place is everything a true yoga practice should be and more! There is a wide variety of classes and the instructors are all absolutely fantastic and knowledgable. I went for my first time two weeks ago, and have been 5 times since! The atmosphere is appropriate, the music is a nice balance between invigorating and relaxing, and the other students are awesome, too. I would recommend Patanjali’s Place to anyone, and already have!

Patanjali’s Place is awesome. I’ve attended about 5 classes and haven’t felt uncomfortable or out of place yet. The instructors are well trained and teach based on traditional yoga and meditation methods, but aren’t too serious about it. The space is undergoing a renovation and they have moved into the basement of the Trotter building in downtown. Bryan is a fabulous instructor and certainly makes yoga doable at all levels.

A fabulous yoga studio! This is my first experience taking yoga. I started going to the Yoga Basics course about 3 months ago. The instructor, Bryan, is a fabulous yoga teacher who makes it fun and appropriate for people at all levels. No 2 classes are alike and he asks beforehand if there are specific areas you’d like to work on. There are beginners and yogis alike in this class, but no one feels left out. The studio is a converted warehouse and the huge space is inviting and calm, next to a playground where you can hear the children playing as you are in your moment of zen. :)
Walk-​ins are welcome, and you can purchase a 10-​class card that saves you money per session.

I love Patanjali’s Place! High ceilings, lots of natural light, beautiful colors. It’s a very homey atmosphere, not at all pretentious. They have classes for all levels and each of the teachers there is unique. I also love that there’s a wide variety of styles – whether you’re into more ethereal or spiritual practice or just want to sweat, you can find a class that suits you. I would encourage you to go if you’re a beginner – the classes I’ve been to are small and you’ll get a lot of personal instruction. They also have mats for you as well as other yoga accessories and they don’t charge extra for them. More advanced practitioners will find it easy to get into a meditative flow – the atmosphere is serene.
The one bummer is that the crossfit gym is next door, and you sometimes hear some awkward grunts and clangs as weights drop. But I prefer to think of it as practice to maintain my focus.
