Hot Dog Shoppe

I see some bad post about this place and don’t understand why. You can feed 4 people here for under 20.00 and that’s eating like hogs.1.10 for a coney dog .it’s delicious

While doing some shopping at the Fiesta Factory in Newell we were looking for a quick place to get lunch. The Hot Dog Shoppe did not disappoint! Being from out of town, I’m unsure if this is a chain or a single shoppe. It was delicious!!! I went with two chili cheese dogs and chili cheese fries.
All of the food was fresh. The fries seemed handcut and still had the skins on. That’s usually good indication you’re at a good place. My favorite part of the whole meal was the cheese they put on the fries and the hot dog. It didn’t taste like your typical nacho cheese that has a weird color to it. This tasted like sharp cheddar that was melted. Tasted like, they went to a deli bought a block of cheese and melted it down! It was amazing and gave a great flavor to the chili dog and the fries. The employees were friendly too. Next time I’m in the area, I can guarantee I will be back.

LOVE THIS PLACE! The chicken sandwiches are so deliciously yummy and the fries with cheese are excellent!!! I don’t eat hot dogs so I go here for the chicken but my husband loves their hot dogs and it’s a great small business. I’ve never had a bad experience here ever. Food is always hot and delicious and as far as I can remember my order has never been wrong. Definitely need to eat at this place if you come into town! The employees are always great and kind.

I LOVE a good hot dog. And frankly (haha), I don’t get to eat them that often. My husband rarely eats meat at all so I was sure I’d have to miss out on this local favorite I’d read about in Unilocal.But guess what? They have a veggie burger! And he RAVED about it: juicy, not mushy, full of flavor, with a nice muffuletta available to jazz it up. I heard so much about how delicious the veggie burger was that I started to feel like I was the one missing out by eating hot dogs.
The hot dogs were good. I think the chili sauce is really what makes them: the dogs themselves are rather pedestrian. Loved the fries and all the hot sauce-​ish toppings you could add. There are also burgers, chili, and homemade soup.
The room is charming and bustling, the staff is great. Place is clean as a whistle.
Now if only I could find out where they get that garden patty…

Not a huge fan of hot dogs but had to try it because it’s an area hot spot. If it weren’t for the cheese sauce, I wouldn’t have given this place five stars. I could take or leave the chili sauce. But it’s cheap, and the rumors are true– they must put crack in the cheese sauce it’s so good.

Anyone who gives this place less than five stars is crazy. This place is a flipping historical landmark. There is no where like this on the entire planet.

Meh… I don’t really get what makes this place so great. Cheap and delicious hot dogs– sure but nothing mind blasting. Feels like they picked up dogs from Walmart and cooked them real good and their chili has no substance– do not get me wrong it’s delicious but there it looks watered down– cheese is cheese it’s always good. I would come again but do not understand what makes this place special. Standard tasty cheap hot dog.

A trip to ELO is not complete without eating here. Great chili dogs and burgers. The soda is cheap. Wish I could take it back to Houston.

Oh please… If you think these dogs are anything beyond a plain Oscar Meyer weiner on a cheap bun from the grocery store, you’ve never had a really decent dog like Pink’s, Cupid’s, or Tommy’s in Southern California. The dogs have no flavor, the skins have no snap, are small, and the buns clearly came out of a pack from the grocery store. Don’t waste your money.

I’ll never understand the local obsession with this place. The chili cheese fries were good, but the hot dogs were just like the ones I could make myself if I went to Giant Eagle and got store brand buns and dogs.

Can be great or can be terrible. Very hit and miss. Wish they would charge a few cents more and up the quality of ingredients.

I grew up coming to East Liverpool to HDS. Cheddar chili dogs and fries. And great chocolate malts.

Never have I ever tasted a more delicious hot dog or eaten a better pile of cheese smothered fries.
My standard order is: Large Cheddar Fry, 2 Cheddar & Onion Dogs, Large «Cherry» Drink. (Not sure exactly what the «cherry» even is… some sort of red pop, but amazingly delicious.)
Yes, the place looks a little old and sketchy, but trust me, the food will not disappoint. There is a little old lady who works there, and has worked there for at least 30 years, I swear! I think she is probably the only one who knows what the special ingredient is in that cheese sauce.
I now live in Hawaii and every time I go back, I drive straight from the airport to this location. Family can wait, there is HDS to be had.
And just FYI, there are some imposter HDS’ in the tri-​state area, but DO NOT be fooled, this one is the only one worth eating at.

I’ve been eating here my whole life. My parents took me there as a kid and now I take my Family. The prices are still fantastic and the food is great. Cheddar Fries and a Chocolate Malt to go will your dogs. The Best !

I was taken here by a friend and I was simply amazed. It looks like a little hole in the wall and when you walk in, it’s not overly impressive. When you get the food, it looks OK, but when you eat it, you are literally in heaven.
I’m from Cincinnati where we live on Skyline and Gold Star Chili, but they both have things to learn from this place. The food is simply amazing. Unfortunately, we don’t have any near us and I am just dying to go back and have some more.
If you haven’t been here before and happen to be stopping by East Liverpool, you need to stop by and eat here. It will be worth it!

Wow! Yep, that simple — Wow! This place has, by far, the best chili cheese dog, chili cheese fries, and chocolate malt! Don’t bring your doc along, but bring your appetite. It’s on our first stop list during every trip. Well worth the six hour drive. If you’re in the area stop here then hit Bruno’s in Chester for the worlds best pizza!!!

Best hot dog shoppe in the world hands down. My grandmother owns the shops right across the street (which is closed down unfortunately now). I have been going to the hot dog shoppe my whole life… literally. The cheddar is my favorite. The choc. malts are fabulous! If you are planning to go to mountaineer you should stop here and eat first. You can order through the drive thru which has two driveways, go inside to order and take out or go inside order and sit down. You don’t have to clear your table… they do it for you! Parking can be seen from the dining area as well! Excellent place to eat then walk around and visit the many shops they have downtown especially if you love antiques and history! While you are there pick up one of their FREE post cards and send it to a loved one anywhere in the world. Guaranteed to put a smile on someones face! PRICED FOR FAMILIES!
update: i recently visited and tried there vegeterian burger. I was one of the best i have had. they put a chili sause on it that totally makes it. iI added tomato to it.

This is an area classic… a legend in it’s own time. It’s just hot dogs and chili/cheese…but it’s SOOO GOOD! The only downside is that you have to drive to and through the ever so divey East Liverpool.

Everytime I go home, HDS is on my food tour!
I remeber going here 25 years ago as a child, and having lunch after my church league basketball games with my family.
Ill never turn my back on a J Burger, Cheddar/​chilli fries and rootbeer :)

It has been argued that all Hot Dog Shoppe’s are the same… the argument stops here! Out of all the other HDS’s in the area, this is THE only one!
After an 8 – 10 hour drive from North Carolina, this is the first place I stopped! If I had found a way to ship it, I would have! I am now back in the area and make it a mission to eat there at least once a week!
If you are worried about keepin up with the Jones’, this is not the place for you! It is not dirty, not by any means, but it is not 5-​star either! I feel safe saying the entire crap hole town is only worth visiting for the cheddar chili and kraut dogs and cheddar chili fries…
