Craving for some Southern food on a Sunday afternoon in Edmond led me straight to Chuck House. I recalled a friend mentioning that it was a pretty tasty joint and since I’m all about good food then to Chuck House we go! Seriously, you cannot miss the big sign with«Chuck House» in red as you drive down Broadway. «Best Chicken Fry in the Universe»… that’s right, that’s what they claim in bold red lettering across the front of their restaurant. So of course I HAD to order their chicken fried steak dinner(what kind of Unilocaler would I be to pass up the«best chicken fry in the universe?»). Anyways, a little tip so you don’t make the same mistake we did. This is not a sitandyouwillbeserved type of restaurant. It’s an orderatthecounter type of restaurant. Somehow we missed the huge counter that lined the back wall and just sat down expecting to be served. OOPS! So back to the food review… The chicken fried steak dinner hit the spot. It was Southern food goodness in my tummy for less than $ 6! It came with ¼ lb of chicken fried steak SMOTHERED in white gravy with a side of Texas toast and your choice of potatoes(fried, mashed, or baked). Mashed potatoes smothered in that same white gravy is the way to go. Yes, I realize that this meal is the road to clogging my arteries, but a little indulgence once in awhile will not kill me… tomorrow. =P Besides, I ended up sharing the meal because sharing is caring =D I also had a bite of the Chuck House Burger(double meat, melted cheese, chili, and tangy relish). The meat was juicy, but I wasn’t too crazy about the relish and chili combination. All in all, this is my new go to place if I’m ever hungering for some chicken fried steak. Not sure if it’s the«best chicken fry in the universe,» but it’s definitely one of, if not THE best chicken fry in Oklahoma.

The original Chuck House is on NW10th Street in OKC. We’d have gone there, but they’re closed on Sundays. So, with glowing reviews from acquaintances, we headed up to Edmond. Chuck House is in a converted fast food building(I’m thinking Wendy’s or Arby’s). The menu is an homage to deep fried meat. The house speciality is Chicken-Fried Steak(serious business in this neck of the woods). They’re also touted for their Chicken-Fried Chicken(similar treament for poultry; just think flour and dredging. It’s not subtle). The prices are cheap, the food was prepared fast, and the portions were large. Recipies for success in Oklahoma, to be sure. So, how’s the food? The chicken-fry was good; not stellar, not abyssmal. Just good. The gravy was too heavy(wallpaper paste; good white gravy isn’t as easy as you think) and the potatoes were too(fake) buttery. Everything fried was hot, but everything not fried was lukewarm and quickly approaching room temp. As my old boss used to say, «People will forgive a lot of things in a restaurant, but cold food isn’t one of them.» If I go back, I’ll get a sandwich, and I’ll probably be okay. However, I’d add one final thing: teach your kitchen staff not to pick their noses on their way into the kitchen from the bathroom. Bad impression.
