El Granada Mkt

I’ve been a regular customer of this store for the two years I’ve lived in El Granada and have spent a lot of money there. It’s very convenient to have a small market close by for odds and ends/​necessities you forgot at the grocery store, but for the last few months I’ve been suspicious of being severely overcharged for the items I buy there. I decided to see how far the owners would take it and most recently was charged $ 43.00 for 3 jalapeños, 4 limes, 1 bunch of cilantro, and two onions. Rather than dispute the matter, I calmly left and vowed not to return. After all, a private store is allowed to charge whatever they’d like, right?
Today, even though I did not anticipate returning, I was left without my vehicle and needed to buy two bottles of wine for guests we were having for dinner. As such, El Granada market was the closest option and I made sure to check the price tags of each bottle: 25.99 for a bottle of Coppola Cab and 15.99 for a bottle of Colombia Crest Cab. I also purchased 1 package of cookie dough and ice cream for dessert. The total: $ 72.64. Let’s do the math on this:
Wine total: $ 41.98
CA grocery tax: 10% = $ 4.19
California Alcoholic beverage tax: 7.48% = $ 3.14
Wine total: $ 49.31
That leaves a package of cookie dough and a pint of ice cream at $ 23.33. Minus sales tax let’s call it an even $ 20.00.
There’s’ paying for convenience, being over-​charged, and getting ripped off. This is the latter.
The owner was on the phone, but did make sure to remove the price tags off the bottles of wine before bagging them and seemed to arbitrarily decide what the prices would be as he typed them in.
I’ve been nothing but supremely kind and respectful to the owner and his family, but he clearly sees me (and maybe his other customers) as less than such and sees fit to charge whatever he wants, whenever he wants.
This will definitely be my last time supporting El Granada market and I’ll make sure all my friends and neighbors know this is the business practice there, as well.
I can get an amazing, delicious 5 star dinner from India Beach Restaurant delivered to my house for four people for 50.00 right next door and still support my local community.

Friendly folks and is great in a pinch.

Always friendly, and always has what I need for that quick emrgency trip for bread or eggs!
