When you combine Burritos Cananas with next door Pepe’s tamales you end up with El Paso’s deadliest lunch 1 – 2 punch! I’ve tried their chicharron, barbacoa, and mole burritos and they are all great, chicharron is my favorite, though its very spicy. The food is pretty cheap too, burritos range from $ 2 to $ 2.50, so for about $ 5 you get a really nice meal! And if you’re fat like me, you’ll complement that with a tamale from next door. The burritos themselves are pretty simple, which is a welcomed change from today’s Chipotle-inspired gimmick burrito joints. I’m not sure if the tortillas are homemade, but they certainly taste like they are! This is clearly a family operation and the folks there are incredibly friendly, I also dig the décor, but not in a gay way. BOTTOMLINE: Great cheap burritos!

I was up early on Saturday morning and running errands. I noticed a new restaurant in the neighborhood that just opened by the name of Burritos Cananas. It’s a small Mexican Restaurant that specializes in Burritos, hence the name. I really wasn’t expecting much as I wanted something quick as I was on the run. My expectations weren’t very high as I thought it would be like all the others, average burritos with food seating in the heating dish for a long time. Food that looked like it had been reheated about 5 times. I was completely surprised! It wasn’t anything like that. As I walked in several things jumped right out. First it was very CLEAN, which scored points with me right away. Secondly for being a small place it was decorated very nicely. It was very colorful and I felt like I was in a Mexican restaurant in Mexico. The service was excellent and friendly. You can tell they took great pride in the food they were serving just by their attitude. I walked up to the counter and I saw the menu. The burritos ranged from $ 2.00 to $ 2.50. I started talking to the lady that was serving me. I said, «wow everything looks fresh.» She went on to tell me that her aunt starts working at 5 a.m. and makes everything from scratch, they don’t reheat anything. From the look of it, I believed her. I ordered the Chicharron burritos with beans. It was awesome. It was served with long green chile that was roasted. You could even tasted a hint of smokiness in them. I also ordered the barbacoa burritos because when she displayed the food to me, I noticed it wasn’t greasy. It was delicious. I love it when I walk into a place that I don’t know and it exceeds my expectations. I had two burritos and a cup of coffee and my total was $ 4.50! I found great value in Burritos Cananas with quality food and good service. I would highly recommend that you give this place a try. I believe they close at 4 p.m. daily so beware. Sample of the menu, I will try to scan it and post it later. $ 2.00 Picadillo $ 2.00 Rajas Con Queso $ 2.00 Mole con Pollo $ 2.50 Chile Relleno $ 2.50 Deshebrada a la Mexicana Mexican Plates $ 4.50 Mole served with Rice and beans $ 5.00 Flautas de carne deshebrada with rice and beans $ 4.50 Picadillo con chile verde served with rice and beans $ 2.00 Aguas Frescas, Bottled water $ 1.00, Soda .75 cents
