First of all, the restaurant itself wasn’t that clean or tidy and my water was served with something floating around. The staff were friendly, but the service was kind of slow and my order wasn’t placed in right. Lastly, the taste of the food was also not that pleasant and was very greasy with no flavor.

The food was mediocre and the service was average. I went to this establishment on the recommendation of Unilocal but it just goes to show you.

The food was not authentic but still satisfying much like a panda express. Unfortunately this was the best rated on Unilocal in the area. My biggest complaint was with the younger Chinese hostess in hipster glasses that took our order and worked the register. She was very dismissive and unwilling to clearly explain the menu for us. When I asked about the lunch special she made it very clear that we had 4 minutes and counting to place our orders. After repeating that simple fact multiple times we rushed our decision and ordered. She continued to be rude throughout our stay and when we payed she just tossed the receipt on the counter skipping the common curtusies like sign here, thank you, and just communicating like a normal person would. If the Msg doesn’t leave a salty taste in your mouth the hostess will. Side note all other servers were very helpful and welcoming.

Shan Dong was, sadly, a quite a disappointment. Being from the East Coast, I am used to solidly good Chinese food(in both the«Authentic» and the«Cheap» categories). I had heard that Shan Dong was a nice, authentic Chinese place, with solidly good food. Upon arrival, though, I found that the hostess was not friendly(she acted as if we were interrupting her when we arrived, even though there was no one else waiting to be seated and only a few patrons in the restaurant itself…). Additionally, the waitresses were rude and judgmental, and the food came standard from the kitchen COVEREDINMSG! I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw the note on the menu that read«Please inform server if you wish to omit MSG.» Although this was fairly horrifying to me, my fiancé and I were starving, so I decided to still give it a try, and just follow the instructions on the menu and ask the server to have the Chef omit the MSG from our order. When placing my order, I politely asked the server if this would be possible. Apparently this was horribly offensive to her, because her demeanor for the rest of the night was rude, curt, and judgmental. After my fiancé and I ordered an appetizer and two entrees for ourselves, and finished most of it, as we were quite hungry, she stopped by to pick up our plates. I was absolutely flabbergasted when she commented to us something along the lines of «Oh wow, I cant believe you finished so much! You eat a lot, huh??» She then proceeded to take our mostly-finished plates over to one of the other women working in the restaurant, and loudly comment on them, all the while gesturing between our plates and the table where my fiancé and I were seated. This restaurant is somewhere that I would not recommend going, unless you have a taste for eating inauthentic, chemical-filled Chinese food, all the while being shamed by the wait-staff.

I don’t know what happened to this place, but the food is just not good anymore. Three times, I’ve ordered the hot and sour soup and it is way too salty, other guests dining with me said the same. I ordered the kung pao chicken, vegetables were cut in various sizes, and most pieces were overcooked, mushy, lacked the great flavors it usually had. Egg rolls were dripping with oil, fried noodles with soup were stale, again!

The service was great the staff were very courteous and helpful being it was my first time visiting. So many options to go with on the menu we had the chop Suey combination with garlic sauce on the side which came with hot and sour soup and egg roll. The egg appetizer was so good it wasn’t enough the soup was tasty and left with anticipation.. And in timely fashion the meal arrived on my last spoon of soup. Great meal and probably some of the best Chinese food in the area hands down. Just nice genuine good Chinese food with great service ! Thank you we will be back!

I’m a former army wife and I love this place! Great food and good prices. Egg rolls are really good, and so is the chop suet and sesame chicken. Service is good too. I couldn’t find menu online, so I’m attaching pics of menu that were taken in November 2015(menu may change in future I’m sure)! Only downfall, they are closed on Tuesdays. Lunch specials are a great deal!!! I’ll try to post a pic with hours, as lunch hours seem to be a little different on weekdays/weekends

If you’re not from around here it’s on the Far East side of town in a very nondescript neighborhood. The food is good if you don’t mind a lot of salt. They’ll leave out the MSG upon request. I recommend the salad rolls as a healthy substitute to the egg rolls. The prices are on the high side if you come for dinner. $ 10.99 for most entrees. Come before 3:00 to get the same selections for $ 6.50.

Just moved to El Paso and have been searching for a «Go to» Chinese restaurant. Hot and sour soup is great. Egg rolls are fresh and gave a great flavor. Love how they bring you a mini pitcher of whatever you’re drinking. My fiancé and I go through a lot of tea. Sesame chicken is awesome. Great prices and great food. Service is very nice and fast. Definitely on top of our list.

FYI… This restaurant does not accept American Express I have to say, I really did enjoy the food at this restaurant. The staff were very attentive and friendly and the food was pretty good. I ordered sesame chicken with added cashews and no MSG. I would have really enjoyed this dinner more if they had used a little bit more white meat and a lot less fatty meat chicken. Prior to my dinner, I ordered steamed dumplings, which I didn’t realize would be so large. I think I could’ve made a meal out of that. That appetizer is definitely worth sharing with at least three people. Now, here comes my gripe. Since I am traveling on company business, I am forced to use a corporate American Express card. Prior to coming to this restaurant, I checked to see if American Express would be excepted, as I have noticed that most Chinese restaurants don’t seem to accept it. I checked the Unilocal page and I saw a list of credit cards, where one of which, was American Express. To my shock, as I put my credit card on the table with the bill, I was told my card would not be accepted. To give the restaurant credit, the manager did come over to us after hearing us discussing this with the waitress and asked us where we saw this, and I showed her the Unilocal page that I had. She profusely apologized and stated they could not except the card as American Express charged them too much. I certainly am not going to rate them lower because of this, because that is an error I think more with the Unilocal application. I think Unilocal needs to do a better job of alerting people who use that application which forms of payment are accepted.

Pros: Great egg rolls and Hunan beef. The egg drop soup was okay but I’m not a huge fan of egg drop in general. Decent lunch prices too. Cons: The service was a little slow at times.

5 stars for lunch menu only… I have been for dinner and it’s not worth the money! The food is really good. The service is good as well. Dinner prices for the amount of food ridiculous… parking is great.

Shan Dong’s is and always will be delicious. Best egg drop soup and best egg rolls in town. It’s the closest thing to tasting god’s ball sweat.

This place is good. Good service and authentic Chinese, but Korean, food. I have only tried two dishes here, the Seafood soup(jjam pong) and Yang Jang Pi. I’m not totally confident in the 5 stars I gave them because i’ve been there only once, but my first experience was awesome. The seafood soup is as good as any I’ve tried before. I’m no expert, but personally, they are no different than the ones I had in LA growing up or in Korea, but definitely don’t compare to my mom’s or wife’s ;) Definitely recommend this dish. But beware, its spicy; may be too much for the average american taste. The Yang Jang Pi is delicious as well. I’m not very familiar with this dish; had it just a handful of times at family functions. But gotta say, I don’t remember it being this good. Its not really an entrée, but more of a sharing dish. Its made up of a variety of stuff: shrimp, carrots, egg, acorn jelly, and other stuff. They mix all of it at the table. A family of four can share this, while they eat their seafood soup or black bean paste noodles. I highly recommend this.

Coming from San Diego where the Chinese food is served top-notch this place is one of my favorite Chinese restaurants in El Paso. The staff can be a little rude or maybe lacking personality but the food makes up for it. Some of the lunch specials I really like is the Orange Chicken, Kung Pao Chicken, Beef and Broccoli, and the Sweet and Sour Chicken. Their egg drop soup is the and you have to try their jasmine tea. Yummmmm!

I grew up 7 blocks away from this great restaurant and never ever notice it. I walked into this place and I loved the décor. I know I’m weird but, i think the décor has to do a lot with the dining experience. I felt like I was in an old film«big trouble in little china» it’s a Kurt Russell film. Don’t know what I’m talking about? Google it! I went there with my wife and daughter on 8⁄18 and had the beef and broccoli it was wonderful. My wife and daughter had the hunan shrimp. Yes ! I tried it that as well. Wonderful! The egg rolls were fabulous! The quality of the food is EXCELLENT. Staff was also very friendly. The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars is that the portion doesn’t match the price. I’ll be back!

Have been coming to this place for years. Typical order for us is Jjajangmyun, Jjampong, Tangsooyook, Fried rice and a few others dependent upon occasion. FYI, the portions are huge! Definitely made for family style dining. I highly recommend the Jjampong!(Spicy seafood soup with noodles) Delicious!

JJAJANGMYUN. JJAMBBONG, TANGSOOYOOK. GHAMPOONGSAEWOO. These are dishes specific to a cuisine this place represents. Yes. This place is a Chinese restaurant. Yes they serve the typical Chinese food. However,(stomp stomp) if you know the history of this particular group of people, you will know that they have certain dishes that many people have never seen or even heard of. I dont think they even have English names and if they do, theyre just descriptor words of what the dish is made of.(then again a lot of Chinese dishes are named that way –__-) I don’t know the exact history, but from what my parents told me, this cuisine originates from a small group of Koreans that live in China. Their preferred language is actually Chinese due to their acclimatization, yet they still speak some Korean. Anyways, I come here to eat these specific dishes. Not your typical egg rolls, kung pao, szechuwan, Mongolian, sweet and sour, egg drop soup etc. Its the all-cap words above that I come for. I’ve had this cuisine from multiple places, but to find this gem in El Paso!!! Wow… no words. I’m tempted to say this place is better than the places I’ve been to in several Asia towns in Cali. JJAJANGMYUN — black bean noodles with seafood and pork. Its like an asian spaghetti, but with black sauce JJAMBBONG — *very spicy, the kind of spicy that makes you cough as you swallow so you end up choking on the spice, heat, and liquid. Amazing though! Seafood noodle soup with veggies TANGSOOYOOK — made with fried pork or chicken. Pork is WAY better. glazed in a sweet and sour sauce with pineapples, carrots, onions, and some other veggies GHAMPOONGSAEWOO — Fried Shrimp glazed in a spicy red sweet and sour sauce Try it! Love it!

I recently visited this place for the first time and I was blown away by how well the food tasted. I told many friends about this place. Egg rolls: the egg rolls are really good when you dine at the restaurant. They don’t have pork in them which is good! Ask for the red chile sauce! Be advised, the egg rolls don’t taste as good when you take the food to go. It may just be the oil making it soggy. Chicken Fried rice is actually really good. For those who don’t like a lot of egg in the fried rice you will enjoy it. I personally like more egg in my rice. Mongolian Beef: portions are big, which is never bad. But I did disliked the amount of onions put in the dish to make portions look larger. The beef tasted pretty good. I also didn’t care for the amount of broth or juice that comes with the plate, it sits there and makes everything greasy. You can choose steam/fried rice as your side. The interior is typical neighborhood Chinese restaurant decoration. What pisses me off is when employees start vacuuming while you are eating. How hard is it to wait until the place is pretty empty. Sure enough, they were doing that. Smh MSG is used on every plate. I went back yesterday for take out, and it wasn’t very good. You’re better off eating there. It’s a bit pricey for basic Chinese food. You can get better Mongolian beef at pei Wei.
