Was looking for some local grub while passing through town and stumbled upon this gem. We tried the beef and cabbage as well as the beef and potato and both were among the best meat pies we have ever tried. Kicking myself now for not purchasing a bottle of their homemade sauce to go. If you are crossing through this area and looking for a quick bite with friendly service, definitely check out this place. You will not be disappointed.

Came through Elko on the way back from Yellowstone, and this place really exceeded my highest expectations. They have handmade meat pies which taste great for a very fair price as well as equally great sweet pies. They are great to eat there or to take with you for later. This is really top quality food in a town where I’d usually expect to find Taco Bell and the like. The owner is a really friendly and pleasant guy. The place is very British themed with a big Union Jack outside, Worcestershire sauce on the tables and so on. In short, if you happen to be in the vicinity, go there and you won’t regret it.

We stopped into BJ Bull because of the Unilocal reviews and man were they right. We have had the turkey/stuffing/cranberry, the chili verde, the beef and mushroom and the breakfast over the course of several days and all were delicious but my favorites are the breakfast and chili verde. If you don’t eat them piping hot they rehear perfectly in an oven and the microwave does an adequate job but if you have an oven go that route. It’s worth the time investment. The people running the place were very friendly and we’ll be back again in the next few days.

Good pies, reasonable prices. I wish they offered fresh cut fries and gravy to go with the pies.

Always great pasties and friendly service! However, I hadn’t been here in a while and wanted to take home some beef & mushroom pasties. It was about 2pm and when I asked to get some, they only had one left. Really? You don’t keep a well stocked freezer of pasties??? It was disappointing and I wound up only buying the one pastie instead the dozen that I wanted. You lost a sale and I lost faith. The signage really needs to be updated. It’s boring and doesn’t make a newcomer want to stop, especially if they don’t know what a pastie is. Signs are difficult to read. Also, it would be nice if the business hours were displayed in the window, not just the opening hour.

We stopped by here in our way after seeing all the good reviews but ended up very dissapointed. The lady was nice but the bread was awful. I don’t really write a bad reviews but I think the 5 stars rate was very deceiving. I love eating local food but this one is just really bad.

If you are rolling by elko make a stop here. Its all handmade real food. Good filling and cheap. Also portable. We are driving across i80, found this on Unilocal.Beef and cabbage and the beef and mushrooms great. Taking a blueberry pie to suppliment the next 8 hours of coffee drip.

Glad I trusted prior reviews on this one. Beef + Mushroom or Beef + Cabbage both awesome and fairly priced.

This is a MUST! But frankly, I almost turned around when we first walked in. I saw all the great reviews however, the parking lot was empty at 8:30 in the morning. We went in hoping for eggs and I didn’t immediately see anything interesting on the menu. Then the clerk(owner ?) showed us these freshly baked pastry pockets in the oven. He said he had two breakfast pockets; eggs, sausage and cheese or deluxe with eggs, bacon, sausage, peppers, mushrooms and onions. We each had the deluxe. They were fabulous!!! Oh, and be sure to add a little of the homemade sweet and hot sauce. You won’t regret it!

Wonderfully surprising stop along the road. Definitely go here if you’re in the area. Everything is made fresh onsite and you can taste that it’s handmade. The only downfall is that I don’t have this place down the street from my house.

This place was AMAZING! I only regret I didn’t take extras for later. Their crust is amazing on both their sweet and savory pies. Highly recommend it. It will be a regular stop now on our future road trips.

Delicious! We carried out, had the beef & potato & onion and the beef & mushroom pasties. Just like we remember from Wales! Also, try the ginger beer for a nice non-alcoholic change of pace(note: it has a kick)!

When I’m on a road trip I don’t expect to find food I wish was close to home. However, this place! I wish it was down the street from home. The man behind the counter was pleasant and knowledgeable. When my friend and I finally decided we’d each get a warm pie for now(me chicken and rice – Him beef and mushroom) and a cold for later(me –breakfast pie Him beef and mushroom) Excellent!

Their pasties recipe is authentic. We ordered a pecan pie, the chicken and rice, beef and mushrooms, breakfast, and egg and cheese pasties. Smells and looks yummy, however each one was super dry and dense. Couldn’t swallow past 2 bites due to the dryness. Where’s the juice? We had to toss it all away, what a waste. :( Their dessert was pretty good though. Pasties=1 * Pecan pie=3 *

Very tasty pasties. I had the beef and cabbage and the beef and mushroom. The pasties came out warm, but not burn your face off hot so you have to wait 10 minutes for your mouth to heal and you can’t even taste the pasty anyway. The crust is flaky and the beef wasn’t overcooked. Hand pies are the best pies.

This is a must if you are looking for an affordable and delicious dinner. It cost us $ 8 for two delicious beef and potato meat pies. We found this place through Unilocal and I’m glad we did because it was perfect for our drive through Elko. When we walked in we were greeted by a very friendly man and served immediately. We ate at the counter which was clean and had a variety of sauces for the pies. I personally liked the original BBQ sauce that they make there. This cute restaurant will be on my list if I ever go through Elko again.

If you’ve ever had the pleasure of driving across the country with all your stuff and several screaming, pooping cats in the back seat of your car, and yourself having eaten nothing but truck stop buy-one-get-one-free ice cream cookie sandwiches for two days straight, then you’ll understand what absolute paradise in the I-80 desert B.J. Bull Bakery is. And you know what? Even if you aren’t under those pretty specific circumstances I’d still say this is a must-stop on any journey through, in, or around this area. Even worth going out of the way for, in my opinion. Their specialty are Cornish pies, of the savory and sweet variety, and they really out do themselves. The storefront is adorable, the family that works here is equally as adorable, and the pies are tasty as heck. So much so that after we scarfed down our first order, we went back purchased some frozen pies to take with us on the last leg of our journey to California. There’s no shortage of savory meat options and we were told the beef and cabbage was the most popular, and it also has bits of sausage in it as well, so we got one of those frozen to-go, along with a frozen veggie and cheese for me. For our«dine-in» order(we actually ate it in the parking lot in our car with the cats) and we were sure to purchase a side of their habanero and regular bbq sauce for dipping — which is a must. The habanero is perfect and something even non-heat-seekers can handle given the correct pie to sauce dip ratio. We loved the sauce so much we yet again went back in purchased several more containers of it, though in hindsight I probably should have just ponied up for the bottles they sell. I stuck with the veggie option for my dinner pie, and it was chock full of hearty root veggies and apparently cheese, though the veggies filling really kind of takes over… not that that’s a bad thing. My Dad got the beef and mushroom and immediately noted how fantastic it was, just before he lead the suggestion to head back in and get more pies to go. In addition to our savory pies, I scooped up a kale salad(which was ok– nothing crazy special but they do have a deal where you purchase a pasty(pie), kale salad, and a bottle of ginger beer so $ 8.50, so that’s nice and it’s certainly enough for a hearty meal and then some. It was nice that the pasties are easy to eat with just your hands and the paper bag packaging so it wasn’t an ordeal for us to enjoy them on the road like the melting ice cream sandwiches were. And since we’re not dummies, be also took a fresh, hot rhubarb pie with us since it seemed like the only sensible thing to do, and we certainly had no regrets on that one. It was the perfect-est rhubarb anything I’ve ever had. It was crazy tart or crazy sweet — it was just right and exactly the way I always hope rhubarb desserts will be. They had a number of dessert pies, several of them seasonal like the pumpkin, which I kind of might have to come up with another excuse to drive all the way back out here for.

I thought I already gave this place a review a number of years ago?! Oh well I will be happy to throw another review onto Unilocal for this fine establishment. I haven’t eaten here and I have only taken the food to go, either in frozen form or in the handy warmed form. I’ve only experienced super helpful and friendly staff pack up a to go order for me on short notice. I’ve only taken pies to go and eaten them with eye rolling satisfaction. I’ve only tried and enjoyed every type of pastie they serve. I’ve only NOT gone broke buying all these wonderful offerings because the prices are reasonable. But I haven’t been disappointed, that is for sure. I am glad I don’t live in Elko because, even though they aren’t just more dough than anything else, I know I would over-indulge and have way too many carbohydrates than I should if this place was in my back yard. So, the next time you are either staying in Elko or just driving through. I urge you to check this place out. And I PROMISE that you will be surprised with the quality product you get from this place. Pasties and pies to dream about for months to come.
