Yuck! I haf been here a couple years ago(dont live in town anymore) and apparently it’s under new ownership now. Not impressed. At the start of their dinner hour(5:30), our waiter informs of us od a couple menu items they are out of, ok fine. So I order«oh yeah we’re out of the sauce for that.» Alrighty… change my order to chicken parm with pesto linguine. After quite a long wait, especially considering we were the only ones in the place, we get out food. Chicken was chewy and hard to cut but marinara had a nice flavor. So I move on to the«pesto«. I use the term loosely because I’m not sure what they used to make it but it wasn’t basil or garlic, it had quite a btter flavor. Bust! My friend had Tri tip which he said was good but the mashes potatoes had the consistency(and taste, almost) of glue! The price and service were not desirable qualities either. A LOT of things would have to change for me to consider ever going back.

The service was awful. The planning by management was awful. The flavor was awful. I will never come back to what used to be my favorite restaurant, as i get higher quality sushi and service at the smith’s deli counter. For years this was my favorite restaurant. I worked here for a few months years back, and ate here almost as often as i could afford to until january, when i moved to las vegas. I went out for sushi at numerous restaurants, but none of them were anywhere near the quality and flavor consistently found at the flying fish. In the last 9 months this has changed. Ive been dreaming of this sushi, and tonight ive had the worst dining experience of my life. We waiting 10 mins for drinks. Then we ordered appetizers. About 20 minutes later they came to take our order. We ordered 7 rolls. They told us then that they were out of eel, and they were slammed and short staffed, and it would be about 15 minutes before they started our rolls. The tables were less than half occupied. We hesitantly agreed to wait and switched to eel free rolls, and recieved one bowl of complimentary edamame(for 5 people). The waiter assured us that the appetizers were in the works before the delay, and would be out shortly. We waiting another 20 minutes until the waiter came out to tell us they were out of a coconut base for one of our appetizers. We changed out order again, and got our appetizers 10 mins later. In another 20 minutes they brought us our sushi setups, and said all the rolls would be ready in three minutes. 10 minutes later they brought half of them out. We were starving, so shared across the table and dug in. I have never had sushi so bland. In each an evety roll we tasted the topping sauce and texture. I did not know food could be so flavorless. 10 minutes later the rest came out with the same quality. My best guess is that all of the ingredients were previously frozen. Do not waste your money!

I’ve been here a few times over the past three years and the food is good, service is good but overall, it’s pricey for what you get. I had a sashimi appetizer once that was incredibly overpriced for the minimal amount of fish that was on the plate. A total waste of money. Flying Fish is a place that is not a destination for me because of the overpriced menu. They’re trying to be foofoo in a town that is laden with miners and ranchers.

Very nice place. We were passing through Elko on our way back to California, where there are 3 billion Sushi places. If this one were in California, I would go back to it. We had a couple of their special rolls and a very nice avocado and seafood appetizer. I would definitely recommend this place

We did the dinner for two for $ 50. You each get a starter and then you share 3 rolls. It is a good price for what you get, and the service has been good every time we come in!

Fantastic gem in Elko. Worth the cost. Great vegetarian options. Awesome atmosphere and service. Large menu selection. Everything was super fresh and tasty. Ordered Pad thai, a few vegetarian rolls, and the hummus plate. Super satisfied and highly recommended.

Ok, this cocktail is yummy! It’s called Nesta’s Nectar. I’m not a big fan of sweet drinks, but this mixture of pineapple, vanilla, cinnamon and suugar infused vodka floated atop piña colada freeze is quite the treat! It’s not the best drink with sushi, however. The Hat Trick roll is good, and if you like it hot, order the Slap. You will feel slapped! The Tempura is not what it used to be — tiny veggies; they should be big finger food sized pieces. I’ve had better experiences at the Flying Fish, but it’s still a nice place to dine.

I really wanted to like this place(I just moved here from Denver and before the Bay Area) and have a decent sushi place, but this ain’t it… Go to blue moon. I wasn’t expecting outstanding sushi in Elko, but this place was over priced, they skimped on the ingredients AND the waitress was tryna argue with me after SHE lied and told me a roll had more pieces in it(prior to me ordering it) than when it came out. Which took at least 30 minutes for our food to come out min you. I ordered an $ 11 veggie roll that had 6 small pieces and the majority of stuffing was romaine lettuce. I wish I would have taken a picture of it, it was ridiculous. Probably 80−90% of the inside was lettuce(not counting rice). I gave 2 stars instead of 1 though bc after me complaining and asking for her manager she gave me 50% off that roll for not telling me upfront when I asked(bc $ 11 for a veggie roll is crazy!).

The Lee Engine Sushi roll is my favorite. I only wish they had all you can eat specials but they have Sushi for two($ 50) for 2 appetizers and 3 rolls(select variety).

We have patronized this restaurant since when Ed & Mary owned it at its prior location, and it was good, perhaps the best sushi place in NV east of Reno. However once they sold it and the new owners took it over, it has gone seriously downhill and tonite’s dinner there at the sushi bar was/is our last. Other than the really great draft beer selections, the sushi served at the bar was awful. First, the miso soup came out lukewarm, then the Spider Roll did not have soft shell crab, but rather crab meat(which was probably imitation crab) and the sushi chef didn’t tell us they didn’t have soft shell crab when we ordered the spider roll(he did appropriately take it off our bill, however!). They also had no tobiko which is an essential ingredient for a sushi bar. The wasabi looked like some green toothpaste and the sushi chefs really were poorly trained… they were using incorrect knives, sawing the fish rather than slicing it, and really clueless as to how to prepare and cut sushi rolls. We are so disappointed that this place has changed for the worse as it was our go to place to eat in Elko. I just wonder what the owners are doing, where they are each evening, and whether this place will survive at all. Will it even still be open the next time we pass thru Elko? What a shame that Ed & Mary ever sold it! At least they had pride of ownership!

The food was great until I saw two sushi chefs practicing uncalled for food handling! One was texting with his gloves on and did not change them before he began assembling and the lady popped food into her mouth not once, or twice but three times and she kept smelling the fish! Had I not already eaten I would have walked out! C’mon people!!!

We really enjoyed having dinner at the Flying Fish. The food was very good, the service very friendly and fast, and the décor fun and interesting, and prices reasonable.

I USED to LOVE the Flying Fish! Now I don’t. The rolls are nasty, especially the tempura dipped ones. They need real sushi chefs working there, not ones that bite their nails whilst crafting your roll. I have it two stars though, because they have EXCELLENT Inari. It has crystal shrimp on it, and is so delicious.

Meh… I really wanted to like this place. So much so that I have tried it 4 times. That’s 4 times that I have wasted far too much money. The food was well, ok. If the prices were more inline with the quality my rating would be higher. Let’s be honest, I am not expecting the highest quality in a small town in the middle of the desert but if my wife and I are going to pay an $ 85.00 tab then the quality should be there. Being fond of sushi I was excited when they came to town but I have been disappointed on every occasion there. The crab is imitation crab, the same imitation we buy from Walmart. Unfortunately we eat enough of it I would recognize it anywhere. I’m used to all you can eat sushi. Knowing I am going À la carte I pay quite close attention to what we are getting. If you go in and plan on getting full, bring you wallet, it’s going to cost ya. As I mentioned above, I wouldn’t mind the cost, if the quality were there. Freshness isn’t the top priority here. Nor is the quality of fish. On one occasion I ordered what was supposed to be Phở. Sadly it was not. The noodles were too wide and mushy. Broth was bland and the beef was improperly cut, thus affecting the cooking of it. Service is hardly there. There is a feeling of arrogance when you go here, like you should be privileged to be allowed in the doors. Drinks take forever, food takes forever and most everything is bland and lacks any attention to detail. For us we would much rather go to Kubuki sushi. It has a much better atmosphere, quality and they offer all you can eat at a reasonable rate. Flying Fish will unfortunately not be on my list any longer, four times of being treated poorly while eating not so great food is enough.

I don’t think the owners have ever seen a real bowl of Phở. Wide rice noodles — (think Pad Se Ew) that were cooked(or soaked) so long that they just fell to pieces. There was no way to eat this with chop sticks. Beef, the only option, was cut so thickly that it couldn’t have been cooked in the broth. Speaking of the broth, it was just unsalted beef broth with no other spices, horribly bland. If the owners happen to read this, Google phở recipe! Hint: marrow bones, star anise, chared ginger and onions! Garnishes were just as sad. No jalapeños, no Thai basil, no white onions, no bean sprouts. Just really wilted cilantro, green onions, and a lime wedge. it was a normal american sized cereal bowl completely filled with overcooked noodles, chewy over cooked beef and a bit of flavorless broth. They really should be embarrassed by this. The worst part is it cost about twice as much as phở you would get anywhere else. Avoid the phở at all costs.

Terrible sushi. The rice was packed too tightly and the pieces of fish were minuscule. Will never come back again for sushi.

Review for breakfast experience only: Great service and delicious, sophisticated food! Every element of our meals was perfectly cooked and full of wonderful flavor. Service was quick and professional, and the dining environment is pleasant and modern. This is a big city-quality dining experience at reasonable prices, truly a great find in this little town!

My husband and I moved out to Elko and, missing our AYCE sushi bars from Reno, we decided to try this place out on recommendation from my husband’s boss. I have to say that I was really surprised. While it was expensive(and not AYCE), the fish was all really fresh and the spices were pretty good. I would definitely try it again for sure. However, for sushi, it definitely has to be a special occasion place. Looking at the menu, it looked like they had other food to order(some Italian and I know they do breakfast). I’d definitely like to try the other food they serve!

Horrible!!! Prices for Sushi is a joke!!! Not even real crab for prices I get sushi in resort places. This is located in the but crack of Nevada with the whores within walking distance. I will never return here or suggest this place to anyone. You would think this was Beverly hills for these prices. By the way a child sat us at the table and we could not understand a word he said. We almost had another kid run into our table with his roller shoes. Daycare meets Denny’s meets high prices that cause heart attacks! You should get real crab for what they are ripping you off for. Japanese people make sushi not barbies.

Ahhhhh sheeeeeit! Flying Fish is legit. Elko’s got a keeper. The bill keeps getting steeper. With local brews and sports to view. Try the pad thai fo sho, made my mouth say«Hello!» But THE best dish has got nada to do with fish. I say with grand bravado, try the avocado Filled with all sorts of seafood, this appetizer will make you feel renewed.
