Men’s Wearhouse and Tux

I feel like this company may have peaked in the late 80s or early 90s. Today, every time I go in there, prices are exhausting. The selection is decent enough, but often times it’s like $ 100 for a button up shirt, I mean come on. Where are we here?
«Sales» are often ridiculous. Something to the effect of: buy two or three suits and get 1 free, when suits are often over $ 600. And don’t get me wrong, the quality is decent enough. Just not $ 1,200 good in quality.
I feel the Men’s Wearhouse struggles with finding that happy middle ground of being a distinguished store for dress clothes, while at the same time presenting itself as unattainable for the common man.
And it’s not as if the inside looks as stunning as the prices, often everything is scattered about in messy. I just don’t understand how this company expects to succeed in reasonable (average American) neighborhoods.

I always dread going here. I still dread it pretty much every time I have to rent a tux or buy a suit or blazer for weddings, funerals, or work. This time I was buying a suit for an interview. I’ve never had a bad experience here, it’s just a pain in the ass.
That said, this time SALATHIEL MCDANIELS made it a particularly hassle-​free experience. You can tell who he is because he wears a nice three-​piece and a nice watch. He was very diligent with me even though I made him work hard and I asked a lot of stupid questions about style/​colors/​cuts/​matching/​sizing/​quality/​price/​deals. He was a straight shooter. I politely asked if I could get some water and he brought me some, no attitude. He called me «Sir» but it didn’t sound patronizing or make me feel like a chump.
I also didn’t feel like he was being too friendly or trying to sell too hard. He just had his routine of knowing I was a typical guy who wants a deal to look as good as possible and do as little shopping as possible. When I said «no» to something, he stopped pushing the sale.
I walked out having spent over $ 1,000 and feeling like I got a pretty good value. He of course assured me I’d be getting some sort of gift-​card in the mail after a month to use «next time» after I literally just bought a bunch of stuff that I otherwise might have been able to postpone buying, but that’s sort of the company pitch.
I’m going back to pick up my tailored suits in a few days. If the service is good again, I’ll keep this at 5 stars. Anything less and I’ll probably drop it. Beware though: some of these very negative Unilocal reviews seem unfounded.

I needed something to wear for a speaking engagement and I didn’t want to spend a lot of money. I tried to find something at Ross but the line out was so long and the atmosphere so crazy, I gave up. My wife suggested we try Men’s Warehouse next door. They had some great stuff and everything I bought was, buy one, get one free, so now you got my attention, The salespeople were great, asked if I needed some help then backed off and let me breathe. Saleem my salesman made sure he was in earshot though and got me everything I needed as a disabled person I really appreciated his help and humor. Just a nice experience. I will be back with my sons and will recommend Men’s Warehouse in general and Saleem in particular to friends.

I picked out groomsmen suits and was helped by Jesse. He was amazing! The color and design combinations he put together for me will look great on the men for my wedding. As a woman coming in there to pick out mens suits, I was a bit lost. I only knew the color I wanted and he came up with perfection. I am confident that the guys will look great and compliment the wedding in a big way. Thanks again Jesse!

They will continue to upsell on things you say you don’t want. They do a terrible job on alterations, and unfortunately I gave them the benefit of the doubt and experienced it twice. Needed a little rip on one of my pants sewed up and it looked like a 5 year old did it. I’ve had extra charges. Bought some suits and shoes from them, they lost the shoes. I have been to plenty of good Men’s Warehouses, this is not one of them.

I had a good experience with Monica my wardrobe consultant and the fashion consultant. When I had a small problem, April immediately fixed it.

The first time I went in here was to buy a suit. The whole time the guy helping me was trying to get me to buy things I did not want or need. They also snuck charges in multiple times without telling me. I swore I would never shop here again.
Out of necessity, I came in to get a shirt altered. I needed it done quickly. I called in in advance and asked if my time frame was doable, and was told it was, and that their tailors did not have a big work load. When I get there, I am told that if you did not buy something from them, the turn around was several weeks. Even if this is their policy, I did not feel like anyone in the store cared to help, or cared that I was given misinformation. I moved my schedule around trying to make it in. It was a simple shirt alteration; there is no excuse for a multi week turn around.
If you want to shop where upselling is the first priority, shop here. I for one will never shop here again. This review is specific to this store. I have shopped at other ones (San Leandro), and had a much better experience.

Terribly unprofessional.
I went here to pick out tuxedos for my groomsmen and myself, and that was the first mistake. When I got the initial receipt, it said that I was picking up the tuxedos in South Carolina, even though I got married in Tahoe. I saw this, went to a manager, and they said that was an error and all the tuxedos would be picked up in Emeryville. One of my groomsmen wet to get fitted and ordered his suit, and again his receipt said he was going to pick up in South Carolina. So I called, and was again told that all suits would be picked up in Emeryville.
Couple weeks down the road… guess what happened? All my groomsmen’s tuxedos were there, and mine was in… SOUTH CAROLINA! So they said they would rush a tuxedo for me, which was the second mistake because it wasn’t eve what I ordered, and it fit terribly, so much that when I went to pick it up, I made them re-​tailor it on the spot.
You won’t like the way you look, I guarantee it.

I want to give a big shout out to men’s warehouse in Emeryville Ca, well specifically Shannan Bynum (manager) her customer service was on point from the day we met her! She made Justin and I feel extremely welcomed & to top it off we rented a nice tux spent around 200.00 and was one day late which means an additional 20.00 $, I didn’t have to even ask she just took it off. If you have any special event coming up and you need a tux, go see her !

This is not the place to go if you want to dress well.
These folks are more concerned with making a sale than they are with having satisfied customers. There is a way pants (or coats or shirts for that matter) are supposed to fit. Slacks are not meant to bunch up around the ankle. After questioning the cut of pants 5 times and being repeatedly being assured that the pants would have the correct break, 3 times now they have had to be redone. By redone, I do not mean a quarter or half inch, I can live with that; I mean 1 – 3 inches. It looked like I had someone else’s pant on.
The sales people could care less, they don’t know their product and they don’t know their trade. There is a lack of pride in their livelihood.

Worst suit and tux experience by far. Honestly speaking, I would recommend not wasting your time. Bought more than 3 suit worth over 2,000 and 2 of them weren’t tailored properly. Walked in on the wedding day to pick up the rest and was told it wasn’t ready after I was told it would be ready by the end of the day before. The cashier than stated they couldn’t fix the suit because I can’t afford it. How can I not afford it after I’ve spent over 2,000 and all I owed was 100. GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!!!

I had a wedding the next day, got there 10m before closing and the way they greeted me…“you only have 5 minutes” i had no option except to get a suit and leave … keep looking at me and counting the minutes, that put me off and left the store. ohhh i knew why… the way i dressed! don’t go to this place unless you ware a fancy suit to be treated ok.

The gentlemen that helped me find a suit listened to my needs and found me two suits that suited me well. While I was trying on the suits he had a style guide pick out some shirts and ties. All the alterations were done quickly and my suit was pressed and ready to wear when I picked it up. It was by far the least stressful suit buying experience I have ever had.

This place lacks professionalism and wasted our time. They missed promised delivery dates, constantly make up excuses for their shortcomings, and openly assume the customer is wrong. They treated us lightly because of our younger appearance.
Our party of 5 came in for a group sale to get suits for an upcoming wedding. Andrew was our sales guy at the store. On the first visit, we chose one of the suits he recommended, and then he measured each one of us, so they could order the suits in our sizes. He said they would be in the store in about 2 weeks.
I called Andrew after 2 weeks, and he said we could come in at any time for the fittings. He told us that «this is a very popular suit and we just order a bunch of them in different sizes.» This was the first red flag.
When we went to the store, we found that for two of us, they didn’t have the sizes for the color we chose. What was whole point of our first visit, where we spent 2 hours in the store to get everyone measured, with specific sizes written down next to each of our names? And then not order the specific size and color for us?
He then proceeded to take measurements and alterations for the same suit in a different color and told us he would transfer the markings once the actual suit with the right color comes in. I expected measurements and markings to be done on the exact suit we’d be wearing, but I was told that this was a common practice.
We were given a date to come pick up the tailored suits. Come that day we don’t receive any notification or phone call from them, but I go in to pick up my suit as promised. A different employee brings my suit out, and I go into the fitting room to find the pant leg completely unhemmed and none of the were alterations done. This employee was quick to accuse us saying we did not pay for the alterations, when I had the full receipt to prove otherwise. I spoke with the manager. He was friendly but he treated our complaints very lightly and told me to call Andrew and tell him to shape up. Isn’t that your job?
I asked the manager if I could try the coat in a different size for comparison, since the alterations were not even done, but he was quick to tell me that was not possible unless I changed the pant size to match it. I told him no, these are separate pieces ordered to our size. Then he finally checks the brand of suit and says it comes in separates.
I got measured for the third time now, and he told us to come back in a few days when the alterations would be done. He gave me some scribbles on his business card as a pick up slip. I asked him for an official pick up receipt because his employees ask for it, and they even assume we haven’t paid for the alterations. He insisted otherwise, and said that this was good enough.
The rest of our group except one come back another day to pick up our suits. I asked Andrew if the suit for the last guy in our party was ready. To my surprise, he tells us that it was already picked up because he didn’t see it in the back room. He made that up. My friend goes to pick up his suit another day and finds that his alterations were not done either. Andrew shrugs and tells him that «the same thing happened to [me].»

This review is for Saleem. I went to MW to buy a suit for my wedding and Saleem was unbelievably helpful and patient. He had such great suggestions and was very personable. His overall presence was appreciated.

Went in for a Tux rental. Got the guy that looks like Penn from Penn & Teller, name’s Jessie. Measured me up, had my try on a jacket and shoes, everything went smooth I looked great for the Black Tie wedding event! The salesman had me join the Men’s Wherehouse rewards program and after all said and done cost me $ 115. Not bad!
Later returned to take advantage of their buy one get one free suits sale. Jessie wasn’t in so spoke with another salesman. Felt bad vibes from the fast talking quick wit salesman. Left not feeling so good.
I will request Jessie next visit.

An old friend I’ve known since Middle School reached 20 years of service in the USMC this year. Being a milestone year for him, he invited me to attend the annual Marine Corps Ball for his unit. He told me the event is formal attire required.
I have a reasonable amount of reasonably nice things to wear, but nothing quite full-​on formal. Not wanting to buy/​rent a tux, I went with buying a new black suit instead. Because of a 50% off offer through 1 of my credit cards & a good experience with Men’s Wearhouse many years ago, I gave Men’s Wearhouse another shot.
Walking in wearing gym clothes, staff gave me a dubious look. Initial trepidation aside, an older gentleman, Saleem, stepped up & was very helpful throughout my selection & purchase process. Admittedly there was an added bit of pushy sales to buy more stuff, but I don’t mind saying no & saying it in a way that’s understood.
As for the suit, it really did the trick. After the measuring & tailoring, the jacket fit great. While the pants were a tad roomy, I was given the option of having the waist taken in a little. So, I’ll have to take it back for that. Apparently, it still looked pretty sharp though. At least according Yeeps who saw me sporting it again at Unilocal’s North Bay Holiday Soirée at Spicy Manor.
Though Men’s Wearhouse ousted it’s founder & former CEO, his catch phrase still works for me: «You’re gonna like the way you look.» Yeah, I could get used how I look in a nice suit. & I guess my wardrobe could use a few more. Based on this experience, I’ll likely give Men’s Wearhouse another another shot.

Far from my best suit shopping experience. I lost track of how many staff members I worked with, partly because my original salesman, Tracy, apparently never placed my order nor left any notes before leaving on vacation and then switching to another store. My repeated weekly callbacks to check on the groomsman suit I need for a wedding kept being met with confusion, as nobody else apparently took notes either. Luckily the suit I originally needed to special order became part of a regular shipment, so they got it in a mere week before the wedding.
Now, I’m not built like a fit-​model, so especially in suits, off-​the-​rack shouldn’t be perfect, but the tailor seemed to think all I needed was hemming the pants; given my utter lack of faith at that point, I did no other alterations there, despite my reservations, since the hem would make the suit wearable. I picked it up the day before getting on the plane to the wedding; not a good situation for the nerves. I figure I’ll take it to an independent tailor for subsequent alterations to get an ideal fit.
I will say that once the asst. manager, Salathiel, took over my sale, he seemed to keep things moving smoother, and I appreciated his patience in triple-​checking that the price that rang up was the correct group rate the groom had arranged.

I’ve been here a couple of times with the boyfriend and have found this location to be pretty much what I expected from a Men’s Wearhouse. They have a big selection of items, and there is some variety in pricing. They do frequently have deals and give you lots of $ 50 or $ 100 rewards to spend to try to get you to go back (which. works very well on my boyfriend). When we’ve gone in looking to buy something specific, we’ve usually gotten assistance from a staff member.
Pretty expected, but they also try to get you to buy more, so it’s good to just have a line or two that you can say back to tell them «no» without feeling rude (but that’s just a good skill to have in general whenever you go to a lot of stores that have lots of employees walking around waiting to help you). Something that I was definitely disappointed by was the tailoring job they did with some suits. Although the pants were okay, I still felt like the suit jacket was not a good fit and still way too big. At least it was complimentary.
In any case, I would suggest going here if you have an item in mind and a definite price range, and look/​ask for that specific thing, stick to your guns, and if needed, do an alteration elsewhere.
