Sayonara Toshi It is sad for us to see you close Leucadia Sushi. We always enjoyed eating there, and the seeing all your happy faces and warm greetings. I hope the other end of the recession finds you in a better place my friend.

The fishy smell was not pleasant for the atmosphere. The tuna was fresh, the eel was not. The edamame was scorched and tough, how can you mess up soybeans? Not the freshest but it was the only sushi place that could seat us in the area. Definitely won’t be coming here again though…

Didn’t get sick eating here, service was ok, sushi was questionable.

We ate here for the first time a few days ago and I have reasons to go back. 1. shrimp tempura rolls 2. spicy lobster roll Both were yum. Prices are decent. And service was timely. This place was a good find.

We were going to go to Hapi Fish, but the parking and wait on a Friday night was bad, so we chose to try Leucadia Sushi, which we’ve never been to before. Overall, the sushi was about 3.5 stars, service about 1.5, décor and cleanliness 2 stars. First off, we were handed no less than 5 or 6 menus when we sat down. Very confusing since the some of the same things were on each menu, with different prices. Please make this a little simpler! Our tiny table was covered with menus! My 9 year old was excited for the conveyor belt, since we recently visited several similar sushi restaurants in Hawaii. Unfortunately, there were only about 3 different rolls going around when we were there at 7pm, all spicy varieties which my daughter doesn’t like. By the time we left, there were a few more choices on the belt, but this was well past 8pm. The service: unfortunately, the owners choose to have 2 wait staff for the entire restaurant, so waiting for water, menus, the check, etc all took too long, which isn’t something you want to experience when you’re spending $ 25 – 30 per person. With all the choices in North County for sushi, we wont be coming back here…

The california roll, yellowtail roll, tempura, and miso soup were competent enough. The staff were smiley, friendly, and pleasant — I liked them. Also, prices were eminently reasonable. So, as far as that all goes, that’s all not bad. I wouldn’t go back, though. Main reason, the salmon in the philly roll was unpleasantly heavily smoked — it didn’t say«smoked» on the menu, but I think that it was an unsuccessful attempt to hide its overripe fishiness. Also, the kitchen areas and bathrooms were less clean than I would like in a place serving me raw animal flesh. Also, they gave us like 478 individual menus and ordering sheets, that all looked like they had somehow been designed by the guy from«A Beautiful Mind».(the wait staff area, similarly, looked like a crazy person was keeping their multu-year collection of scribbled notes taped the wall). Unrelated: it was funny watching my seventy-year-old dad try to eat sushi for the first time. He kept ignoring his soy sauce ramakin and absentmindedly dropping his rolls into the tempura dipping sauce bowl, and having them fall apart, cuz he left them in too long.

We’d made plans with our neighbors to meet them elsewhere but the other sushi place was closed… so when we saw this a few hundred yards up the road we told them meet us there. I’d been wanting to check out this place but hadn’t yet so it was the perfect excuse. We only caught the end of happy hour but it seemed like a pretty good deal, especially the $ 2 beer and sakes. Service was a bit slow(the place was pretty quiet too) but always very friendly. I forgot to check the bill as another reviewer mentioned but I think the amount seems right considering how many stacks of plates we had. The fish was fresh and the conveyer belt was fun to use, even if only for grabbing signs off of. The bathroom is a bit of a field trip; I didn’t actually go use it but two of the guys did and especially after several drinks it was pretty funny to watch him trying to find his way to it via all of the windows to spy. On our way out our waitress gave us a frequent eaters card with almost the whole thing stamped off. It was a fun and laid back place that I will certainly keep in mind!

Check your bill… Sad… We’ve always loved this place. Have considered it my local sushi joint for years. Walking distance from our house makes it a fun night out. And on Tuesday’s their happy hour menu goes all night with $ 2 Sapporo’s on tap! The sushi is inexpensive and I like the small rolls. Chef Toshi slices us up killer salmon sashimi every time. Never had a bad experience… Until… Last night… We brought our neighbors out for happy hour… Our food was good. Came in a timely manner as always. The wait staff was friendly and Toshi was behind the counter rolling up his best creations. It was just another great night at Leucadia Sushi! Then the bill came… $ 110 bucks for four people to eat off a happy hour menu! What? Serious? Can’t be right. There’s just no way. So we asked our waitress to bring us a break down of the items we purchased so we could see for ourselves. 10 minutes later after a lot of scrambling was done between the waitress and restaurant owner — She finally came out with an itemized list and confirmed that there were no errors and our total was still $ 110 dollars. I wouldn’t have thought twice about it b/c I trust these people and have never had any issues. But my neighbor took a close look at the list and realized they had charged us twice for ALL or our sushi rolls! How do you calculate a bill twice and make the same mistake TWICE? We pointed out the errors and of course the owner was apologetic. But by this point I was pretty disappointed and skeptical about my favorite sushi spot. Something just seemed«fishy». The waitress apologized continually but to my surprise when she returned with the adjusted bill — They didn’t compensate us for a thing! At the least I would expect the owner to comp a couple drinks or maybe throw in a free roll. Nope, nada, no way jose. 15 minutes later now and she just brings the bill and says sorry again. Total Bummer. I agree with SUE L. who expressed issues on Unilocal.Be cautious and check your bill and your credit card statement. We all left feeling a little on edge as if we were about to get ripped off. I know people make mistakes, but this was too much. They must think people won’t check and they can get away with it. Obviously — We won’t be going back. Sad day in Leucadia.

A friend of mine took me here last Saturday. Got there around 8pm and it was nice and slow. The food was yummy. The Chicken Terriyaki was nice & tender. There IS a sushi train– pretty cool. The bathroom is NOT inside, its at the backside of the restaurant, on the outside. «His/Hers» and both require their own key to enter. It seemed like an alley– it was dark & a little creepy(and I even had mace). It reminded me of 2 things: a gas station, where you have to get the key from the cashier to use their restroom, and ‘an elementary school hall pass’ because the key was O-ringed to a plunger-stick-like, handle– lol– I kid you not. Since I was envisioning Michael Myers & the restroom scene(Halloween– Rob Zombie’s version) — I decided to hold it til I got home. Nevertheless– the food was awesome! Chicken was fabulous, Sushi was fabulous, Egg Rolls– super yummy!

Absolutely delish. I ate 4 different dishes and loved every one of them. The salmon sashimi was probably the freshest I’ve had in North County. I also tried 1 four piece combination roll off of the conveyor belt, a fun feature I’ve never seen before, that was made with spicy tuna, avocado, and shrimp tempura if I remember correctly, and the bite sized pieces were the perfect size as well as the perfect ratio of rice to fish and other ingredients. I also tried the sushi burrito, which is a huge portion and could be a meal in itself. I had anticipated that it would come in the form of a hand roll, but this sucker was so big they serve it in two halves. It is wrapped in rice paper and filled with rice, crab, shrimp tempura, spicy tuna, and avocado. It was so good I ate the whole thing despite it’s size. My friend ordered a blow torch seared beef plate, that came thinly sliced with jalapenos, green onions, garlic paste, and a special sauce. I had never had this before and I am so glad she ordered it. The beef was extremely rare and cold, but combining it with all the ingredients made it one of the most satisfying meat dishes I’ve ever had. I would order this dish over filet mignon any day.

Want a great Sushi Train?! This is your Stop! This place has wonderful sushi and fun experimental rolls… Chef Toshi-San made a fun ‘pizza’ nigiri with Maguro lightly seared in w. peppercorn and topped with diced, flavorful black olives… Sounds weird… but it is so not weird in how yummy it tastes! My favorite roll was always the Tiger Roll w. Brown Rice… the cilantro sauce they use on this roll is stunning! The brown rice they use is terrific… never dry! The staff and sushi chefs are a wonderful delight and always happy to see you!

Love Leucadia sushi bar. We used to frequent this quick fix sushi spot a lot when we still lived in the area. Fresh sushi, quick service, friendly staff. Family friendly even with tables designed to host bigger groups by the sushi train. Tip: Come for the Happy Hour as this place gets full for dinner especially on weekends. Will be back when we are in the area again!

Pretty good — I agree with Scott O.‘s assessment of «Not Bad» and wishing to give it a 4th star as I also live across the tracks from this place. Went in with my boyfriend and had some beer, sake, edamame and a few rolls. I like the fact that their rolls are smaller and therefore lower prices. That way you can sample a bit of everything. Would definitely like to see more spicy tuna in the middle of things instead of that creamy stuff or California roll concoction. Also, its happy hour only really applies to drinks, so it would be good to see a discount on rolls or nigiri or something as well in the future. Our server was good, very sweet and suggested a few specials, which we tried. Food came out quickly and she was back and forth, offering more drinks and food, reminding us when happy hour was almost over so we could get last minute orders in. This place is receptive to Unilocal specials and people who mention it when they come in — three cheers for that. I’ll be back for more good stuff.

First impression … walked in the door and was hit by a wall of fish stink, I automatically was grossed out. Fresh fish should not smell bad, but I tried to give this place a chance and chalked it up to bad ventilation, perhaps they were cooking fish? Additionally, while reviewing the menu I noticed most rolls were served spicy in my opinion that only means one thing … old fish and they’re trying to hide the old fish taste. Many people say ‘oh it’s ½ price sushi’, just because you’re getting half a roll at half the price doesn’t make it ‘half price’. do the math people you still want more sushi after 4 bites so when you pick up the other half of that half roll you’re paying full price … maybe if you’re not hungry then this place could work in your favor? Additionally, I’m not a fan of the conveyer belt style sushi particularly on a slow night. I can’t tell you how many times I saw the same roll pass me. On a good note we did try a special roll and it was great … shrimp tempura roll covered with thinly sliced steak, not super ‘sushi’ like but it was tasty. If you are looking for really great FRESH sushi this isn’t the place to go, sorry Leucadia Sushi …

I was going to write a good review about this place… that is before I checked my credit card statement. To my horror, they added a little extra to the tip on my credit card slip and bumped the amount up! Really? This is after I left them a decent tip. They just changed a couple of numbers to give themselves a little bonus. Seriously? Do they not think people check? The food was decent but I will never go back to this place. That kind of blatant dishonesty is just plain disgusting. CHECKYOURCREDITCARDSTATEMENTSIFYOUWEREJUSTTHERE! And if you go to this place in the future, you are better off paying cash. Leucadia Sushi gets a big thumbs down from me!

This place has a lot going for it. 1. They serve most of their rolls in 4 pieces rather than a full roll. 2. You get twice as much variety than most places you visit 3. Sushi Boats/Train is entertaining and allows for quick eats rather than waiting for your order. However, you cannot over come average quality ingredients. Multiple rolls that we got had either had wilting ingredients or sub par fish. Overall I had a decent dining experience, with no real issues. But if you want to compete as a sushi restaurant in San Diego you need to bring your A game or at least B. I would not come here again, not because it was horrible, but because it is average in a sea of better sushi resturants. Funny Note: When going to the bathroom don’t get lost like my girl friend’s mom and end up behind the sushi bar with confused sushi chefs.

I’ve noticed a trend in my reviews… the closer the establishment is to my living quarters, the more I tend to round up in the 1−5star rating system. Lame? Nah. But regardless, here’s my non-biased two-cents for Leucadia Sushi Bar. What I like about you: 1. 4 piece rolls = 2 great things! a} ½ the price, about $ 4 a pop. b} 2x the variety… That is, if you order 2 different rolls. Maybe you just really, really like the crunchy roll, so you order it twice. That’s okay. 2. The Pink Roll. I used to only have one all-time favorite specialty sushi roll… the Kitchen Sink Roll over at Sushi on the Rock. But now, now I have a tie. The Pink Roll is heaven in my mouth. * Sidenote: The boy and I dined at a table, not the bar, so I have no opinion on the rotating sushi belt. Except that it looks cool.

My wife and I had been looking for a good Sushi restaurant in our area for a while. We happened by this place while driving down the 101 one night while looking for a place to enjoy a meal. The idea of the sushi conveyor belt is great if you’re able to find a spot at the bar. The selection pretty good and they keep the conveyor belt stocked pretty well during peak hours. Close to open or close and you’re left picking up the scraps ;) I marked it down one star because of the service. Their service staff lacks in the customer service department. I can’t count how many time I’ve been left sitting at the bar trying to get a refill on my drink. Other than the service, four stars! :)

The gimmick to this place is that it’s a sushi place with a rotating conveyoor belt. Sushi places like this are found all over. I’ve been to a few in Hawaii and LA(the name escapes me). Sometimes, it’s not a conveyor belt but little boats that sail around a giant circle with the chefs in the center. There’s a sushi place in PB that does this — the name escapes me, and it’s across the street from PB Bar and Grill. Sushi is served up on different colored plates that are priced differently. Watch how many plates you can easily put back. The trick is to sit close to where the belt opens up so you get the best choice of sushi. The further away you sit, you get less of a choice since those upstream take the good stuff. So you just have to be patient. You can still interact with the sushi chef and order special rolls or hand rolls. There’s also a dining area where you can still order Japanese entrees. Like I said, it’s really not any different than other sushi place. Leucadia Sushi has potential, but its food needs to rise above its small space. Whenever I’ve gone, it’s been busy, but I expect more. This doesn’t dissuade me from not going, but all things equal, I’ll go elsewhere as a first choice.

I was VERYVERYVERY disappointed when I heard that this place had great, delicious, and true to the Japan heart Japanese food. I came here expecting a true Japaneses experience and all I felt like I got was a non-filing meal, in a super noisy atmosphere in tight spaces, and leaving my wallet empty. This sushi bar was disappointing because when I go to a sushi restaurant to eat, I love to interact with the sushi chefs and the servers that work there. All I got was a very sad and rushed experience that left me upset.
