Hawthorne Country Store

Love this store! Prices competitive, good prpduct selection, and most importantly all the workers are all helpful and friendly. I go here for everything my chickens or fish need.

Love this store! It was my first go at buying chickens — I had no idea what they needed, what type to buy etc. Megan helped me with everything — for almost an hour! She was so patient and informative. I didn’t feel like a nuisance and walked out of Hawthorne’s feeling confident about taking care of my new chickens.
I repeatedly buy items for my little urban farm at Hawthorne’s. Heather, Suzy, and the rest of the staff are so helpful. If you get a chance, swap stories with Tom Kelly, an amazing gentleman from Ireland, who loves to tell tales and recite a few bars of Irish music. I had the most fun with him swapping refrains from the Star of the County Down. Good times!
Great store with a homey Mayberry atmosphere, first class staff, and excellent products. Definitely a must see/​visit even if you don’t have animals.

I just want to give a shout out to the employees at Hawthornes. They have gone above and beyond my expectations and seemed to really care. I truly appreciate it and will continue to be a loyal customer.

We love this store, including our dog! We all have so much fun here. As soon as you walk in you are greeted. The employees are all very friendly, never had an issue getting help and feeling comfortable. I see some reviews here bashing customer service, i think you need a chill pill and not expect the red carpet rolled out for yourselves.
The store has s so much to choose from. I always get my dogs food here, it is by far cheaper than petco and petsmart. Also treats are a great deal. In general everything here is a lot cheaper than anywhere else.
Sometimes we come in here when we dont have anything to do, yes its tgat awesome. They have a bunch of knick knacks that you would have a hard time finding. They have live animals in the back! Thats always fun. Turkeys, chickens, roosters, rabbits, goats! I might not be able to go to the Safari Park whenever i want to but Hawthorne is always there for me :)
They have a great selection of animal medicine as well. Great sales are out on the front! I will keep coming back untill they kick me out and then i will disguise myself to sneak in.

I’ve been to many feed stores in North County in search for feed for my chickens and I like Hawthorne the best.
I’ve heard their prices are a bit higher than other places but I’ve always found the service to be just fine and I’m usually in and out within just a couple minutes. Nobody likes to wait around for 15 minutes buying feed and Hawthorne moves you through quickly.
They have lots of cute animals, like baby chicks and turkeys, around to look at if there is a wait as well. Overall this is a great feed store.

My wife and I are from out of town and when I knew we were going to be in Escondido, I looked up places that we could get some new and unique chicks. There is less selection here in the Inland Empire. We made it in just before closing and I was worried we wouldn’t be able to get what we wanted. However the staff were very friendly and helpful. There was a great selection of chicks and all the supplies that you need. I was very impressed with this place and I wish it was my local feed store. I know I’ll be back in when I next find myself in the area.

I have been coming to Hawthorne for about 6 or 7 years. I went to a different local feed store previously but was dismayed at how horribly they treated many of their animals. At Hawthorne, I could see an instant difference in how they cared about the animals’ welfare. And they carry better quality foods for my chickens.
I have learned a lot about chickens from staff members, and my dog loves to come along to get a free treat from staff and check out their barnyard animals in the back. He especially loved meeting the goats.
There have been several times I have had issues with sick chickens and the staff has been great in educating me on how to care for them. They even have a chicken hospital on site for their birds that aren’t feeling well.

I have been going to Hawthorne’s for about a year and overall really like the store. The problem I had last time though is the same one that most negative reviewers have already referenced: rude customer service. I had a question regarding chicken feed and the guy the other staff referred to as a «chicken expert» made me feel like an idiot. I am sorry that I am not a «chicken expert» too and rely on staff to answer my stupid questions. I guess I should just know these things. I am a paying customer and don’t deserve to feel belittled. Anyway, I don’t know if I will go back or not. If I do I will keep my questions to myself and figure it out. Probably though I will go somewhere that I don’t need to worry about asking a question. The 2 stars are for the 2 staff members that were very nice. Some of the other staff should learn from them. You would think rudeness to staff would be addressed as it is a recurrent theme.

I have been a customer here since 2011. I have never once been treated poorly by the staff in fact I almost feel like family there. Everyone I deal with goes above and beyond for my questions and purchases.
I have purchased many animals from them and they always answer in detail what care I need to provide. I love my feed store and I think they are amazing! I enjoy visiting that store every time I come in.

I have tried to like this store, but every time I call or go in, I am amazed at the uppity attitude of the staff. They act like you are bothering them if you want to ask a question. I looked around and found Escondido Feed, on Rock Springs, They have everything I need for my cats, dog, and chickens, and they are even FRIENDLY to you when you come in! Imagine that!

We stopped in today to buy some scratch and peck for our chickens. We weren’t sure which kind we needed. The woman who rang us up, Theresa, was incredibly rude, condescending and seemed very annoyed that we needed help figuring it out. If everything else wasn’t closed today we would have walked out without making the purchase. We will not ever go there again, yuck.

The store itself is cute and has some nice items, but store hours are not convenient and prices are a bit high on some items. However, the real issue is that over the years I’ve noticed a consistent problem with snippy and rude staff both on the phone and in person. It’s not a big deal if you are just going to go in, grab something off the shelf, and buy it, but the problem is especially pronounced if you have questions about products. It seems many of the staff just don’t want to be bothered with a lot of questions or take much time to help customers, they just want you to give them your money and then leave quietly. It seems like they often feel whatever else they are doing is more important than helping customers with price checks, stock checks, or other things like that. Most of the other feed and pet stores in the area are much more friendly so it’s gotten to where I am only willing to go to Hawthorne if I can’t find the item somewhere else first.

Love this store! We buy our chicken feed here. Everyone is super friendly and helpful. We are new chicken owners and they were so kind and sweet to answer any questions we had. My daughters love to come see the baby chicks. They load our things in the car. We feel like princesses with all the gentlemen in there!

I stumbled across this store while exploring the backroads on San Diego county. At first, I was really fascinated by the place — having grown up in Texas, this reminded me of home!
They have all sorts of animal feed and supplies, good quality and reasonably priced. There’s also an unique selection of live animals including chickens, ducks and turkeys. I was excited to make this my new go-​to place for all my pet needs.
However, I was extremely dismayed and distressed to see how this store cares for their rabbits. I saw several small cages of adorable dutch and holland lop bunnies — none of which were properly treated:
a. Rabbits need an unlimited supply of HAY constantly with access at all times. They have bales and bales of timothy hay and not a strand spared for these poor animals.
b. Rabbits are extremely sensitive to heat and I know it gets very hot inland, especially with summer coming. If you can’t spare some space inside for the bunnies, at least have the decency to leave them with a block of ice.
c. Rabbits cannot be housed on wire mesh — it’ll cause them to develop painful foot sores. Just place a cardboard box on part of their cage.
d. Rabbits are highly intelligent animals, despite popular perception. They really deserve to be housed in larger hutches or ideally, some sort of pen indoors.
You guys really have a unique business — please show some compassion to all your animals!

I bought a Carhartt here a few months back, they seemed pretty friendly. After that my sister in law went there to buy 1,000 dollars worth of the same jacket. She had the merchandise in her arms and her twin 4 year olds needed to use the restroom. She asked if they could use theirs, and was told it was for employees only. Then they still wanted her business. Needless to say, she left and has no intention of going back, or any of our family.
Terrible customer service.

Hawthorne has always been a great place to get Orijen and Acana dog food. Their prices are really good. They don’t normally keep Acana in stock, but if you give them a call, you can place your order and they usually will have it within the week (assuming the vendor has it in stock). The people here have always been such a great help. One time, I came in looking for a humming bird feeder, and a staff member told me exactly what to take into consideration as far as the feeders go. I went with the plain glass bottle with red bottom (per his recommendation), and that humming bird feeder is so easy to clean, I don’t dread taking it down every other day to clean and replace the sugar-​water. (One time, I forgot to put the feeder back out and the humming birds were perched outside of my kitchen window chirping at me to hurry up and get the feeder out!) When I go there to pick up my dog’s food, I like to go out back and take a look at the livestock they have out there. It’s always fun to see what they have.
Oh, I forgot to mention, Hawthorne also has Stella and Chewy’s dog food!
If you’re into canning, they actually have a section with mason jars and supplies you need for canning. If memory serves me right, they even have dehydrators (make your own fruit leathers or jerky!)
Every time I buy dog food here, I will get at least 15lbs. Someone has always helped me bring the dog food back to my car. It wasn’t until last time I went in and insisted I didn’t need help, that they didn’t help me. It was only 15lbs, I can carry that on my own!
This is my go to place for dog food. They’re able to get the difficult to find foods (which is great since my pup has allergies up the wazoo!).

Product is A+, the owners & employees are helpful, knowledgeable, & I’ve never, ever, seen them get sharp with my kids– We came here after getting nasty customer service from the feed store in Vista… We’re life-​long customers, now! Hawthorne’s is the pick of the litter!

I love this place. The selection is great and staff is awesome. I bought my chickens here and come here for the feed when they run out. The staff was great at helping me find what I needed and are fun to talk to. And to make it even better, whenever you buy any feed someone will carry it and load it into your car or truck for you :) They have quite a few animals here that you can buy. I always feel sorry for the little kitties in the cage outside though and I always play with them every time I go there :(

I LOVE coming to this store. It’s like a lil barn yard get away :). I love coming and checking out all the lil baby animals: goats, puppies, bunnies, kittens, birds, etc. you can also go inside and try on all the clothes and pretend like you’re a cowgirl/​cowboy gettin ready for the rodeo ;) gidee yup!
