Ken — a nice guy serving good fried rice. What more do you need to know? If you’d rather pay more to get worse food from a jerk, that’s your choice.

Ken’s Special Fried Rice is less a food cart and more a food fort. It exists on the edge, so deep within downtown Eugene’s urban decay that many are unaware this brave entrepreneur endures. Believe this reader, if Ken’s falls all the dominoes will surely tumble after him. Ken and Ken only can win the future. New Kesey Square is lost. Anyone who tells you otherwise is a quack, a loon, completely out to lunch. Gone are the days of June 2010 when a buzz was about. Gone are the women pushing babies in strollers. Oh, yes, «Food Pod» was then such an uplifting phrase! Many believed we had charted a new course. In 8 months everything changed. Only one food podder now remains. He hangs by a thread. Ken alone is fighting back the horde of nomadic dread-locked zombies that exist within the hastily quarantined infection zone known as Kesey Square. The Phish listening, cargo pants wearing salesmen approach Ken and insist that he purchase a hemp necklace or blown glass pipe, he repels them with a five gallon jug of Mazola brand canola oil and an old wok bestowed upon the Yuen family many eons ago. Slanging a variety of fried rice options keeps the swarming troglodytes at bay. On the edge of humanity there is no room for local sourcing, sustainable business or organic practice. Ribeye steak infused fried rice, chicken and mushroom, cans of orange soda, and a simple vegetable variance make up Ken’s limited menu. Two defeated lawn chairs surround an old table in front of Fort Ken’s Special Fried Rice. A fifteen to twenty minute wait can feel like forever with such danger lurking. Whoever is brave enough to walk among the infected and pass through the city’s bowels to reach Fort Ken’s please bring him this message: «Ken, I enjoyed your pork fried rice and your willingness to accept a check. If you can hold out until spring, I’ll see if we can bring reinforcements. Be strong friend.»
