Longest wait in the history of drive-thru. I arrived and placed my order at 6:05PM on 5⁄4. There were 3 cars ahead of me. The second car sat at the window for a long time w/o interaction with the window. I didn’t get to the pickup window until 6:21. Why? And they don’t take American Express! Not a great experience.

I have been on a fried chicken binge lately, and when in that frame of mind any source of crispy skinned plump breasted chicken can capture my attention. Popeye’s is no exception. So it was, as I drove over to Prince’s to give it another try, that I saw the bright orange sign and building for the Popeye’s on North Olden. Impulse got the better of me and I made the hard left into their drive thru line. I had difficulty deciphering the menu, so I just ordered a few pieces breasts and wings. Seems I had to order a side and a drink or they couldn’t handle my order. It turned out to be cheaper if I did one of their combos rather than just individual pieces. When I arrived home and opened the box I beheld a large breast and wing that were bigger than I had seen on most chickens. It had me wondering what they feed those birds. The coating was as bright orange as the box it came in, and deeply textured. Perhaps, the cumin and chili in the Spicy option affected the presentation. The meat was still moist and very tasty. Each piece was much larger than what I had sampled at the other place the week before. The chicken easily parted from the bone and my fingers pulled off most of what was edible. The rest I worked over with a fork to get into all the bone crannies. The side dish(coleslaw) was pedestrian, and the biscuit was fairly deflated by the time I got to it. So, the thing to do is order the combo, throw away the sides and biscuit and go to town on the chicken itself. It may not be the same as what is available in those little chicken shacks on the side of the road in Virginia or North Carolina, but it will do nicely up in Jersey on a wintery night.

This place is GARBAGE! If you are going to hire 12 year olds then please make sure they know how to READ the order. Too many mistakes getting a simple order correct.

Popeye’s is Popeye’s, so I’ll review the location. Fast, courteous staff and I’ve never had a wrong order. The other day, we were placing our order at the drive-thru(a bunch of random stuff) and the teller suggested we get one of the combos and saved us a buck! She totally didn’t have to, but it made us very happy.

I feel slightly silly reviewing Popeye’s but it had been years since I’d had it and it wasn’t bad!(Yes I can make better at home). The shrimp is decent, the red beans not bad and the chicken — both tenders and on the bone, pretty good. I wouldn’t really want to eat here– smells greasy but for take out, you could do much worse! Sometimes this kind of thing just makes sense.

I still like popeyes over any fried chicken I have ever tasted. I use to frequent this particular location the most not only because it is the only one within driving distance to my house, but also because the manager is not someone you would find elsewhere. Maybe it is because i frequented this establishment quite a lot when i have my late night fried food cravings. but the manager always says hi and greets me whenever i come. From the beginning he always took the time to stop what he was doing and ask if they had fulfilled my needs and if i had any suggestions for them. This little gesture in the fast food industry? I haven’t personally seen it but it just goes to show that little gestures mean a great deal more and keep customers coming back.

I love Popeye’s butterfly shrimp box with cajun fries and dipping sauce for my shrimp a biscuit and to drink a medium Strawberry Fanta or a large Lemonade. I love Popeye’s 8-piece mixed chicken too! The cajun fries are soo good and the biscuit is just the right size not too big and not too small. Popeye’s Louisiana Kitchen…
