The Ferndale Public Library moved into a gorgeous new facility on Main Street in 2015. There is lots of free parking available on either side of the building. The modern, sleek structure is very inviting with large picture windows that let in natural light and provide a view of Mt. Baker and the wetlands. The book racks are shorter, so you can actually see clear across the main hall at all that there is to offer instead of feeling trapped and lost in a dusty, dark labyrinth. There is a place here for everyone. The children’s area is fun and colorful with ottomans for lounging. Students with laptops can find a source of power to plug into and get some work done. Don’t have a laptop? No worries, there are about 20 computer stations you can sig-up to use. Small tables and chairs can be found in various nooks around the building, or you can plant yourself into a lounge chair with a book. Community groups can rent the small board room or large meeting room. Lots of free classes and workshops take place here regularly, so be sure to check out the community boards for info. I was pleasently surprised to learn that I could check out a book, CD, or DVD at any of the library branches in Whatcom county and then return the item at any of their other locations convenient to me. I will definitely be back, and not just to grab a book and go, but to hang out and get some work done. It is such a beautiful facility, I can’t wait to come back.
