I had great expectations for this place after reading a really positive review by a food blog I follow. I was also really excited because it’s within walking distance of my house, and I’ve been getting tired of going to Royal Oak or Clawson for good but not outrageously expensive sushi. We ordered take out and got the spicy tuna roll, river eel roll, philly roll and the #5 chef specialty. The first three were ok in flavor, but really sloppily prepared and the rolls were cut very unevenly. The #5 was definitely the worst roll I have ever had. It was just nasty tasting! I seriously wondered whether the chef had ever actually sampled it or not. All in all, really disappointing.

The 12 pc roll was the same amount of food as most other places’ 6 pc roll, they just cut them smaller. I got a roll with crab and tuna and it tasted fishy, never a good sign when you are eating sushi. I also got the ginger salad which was just spinach and raw mushrooms with dressing. The ginger dressing tasted like the base was either ketchup or Catalina dressing. Only giving it 2 stars because the staff was very friendly and I did like the ginger flavored soy sauce.

Worst sushi restaurant ever! Only thing the waitress said they were out of when I ordered was jalapeños. Find out when my order arrives that they’re also out of crab and mango. They tried substituting salmon for crab without letting me know beforehand. Luckily I noticed it before eating it since I am allergic to salmon. Also, not a clean looking establishment at all. I will never go back. Don’t waste your money or time.

The absolute worst sushi I have ever had. We bought a coupon for this place on and figured we would try it. Never again. The spicy tuna consisted of a tuna roll with tobacco sauce. My mouth is still burning from eating it. The fish did not taste fresh, and as other people have pointed out, the size of the rolls is misleading. I would stay away, as there are far better sushi places in the area.

ABSOLUTELYTHEWORSTSUSHI… EVER! I love sushi. I love sushi when it’s cheap. However, the stuff that was served can only barely be called sushi. We ordered the 12 boston and 12 new york rolls(hey 12 rolls for $ 5.50, what a deal… so we thought). The rolls were half the size of what you would usually get, only about a half inch thick. They tasted like they were frozen sushi and thawed out all day at room temp. I don’t know where they get their soy sauce but me thinks it was stored in a 55 gallon steel drum at one time. ADDENDUM: The owner responded to this opinion of their restaurant. Instead of apologizing for my experience, he got into semantics about pieces and rolls. He further insinuated that I don’t have enough sushi experience to make an accurate opinion. This is not the way to turn an unhappy customer into a potential returning customer.

Sometimes a girl just needs sushi without all the fuss or upcharge of Royal Oak. I get these cravings a fair amount. All I want is sweet rice, crisp nori, and tasty innards on a plate with a side of ginger. I used to turn to my local Whole Foods in western Chicagoland to satiate the on-the-run urges, but how now, brown cow, in fabulous Ferndale? A new alternative: Grab & Go Sushi. Tucked inside Affirmations is a sushi counter where the chefs play with different ingredients, mixing up American favourites like avocado and cucumber with new and saucy combinations for a tease to the palate. Consider me game for some culinary flirtation, oh yes indeed. I’ve had enough of the dull. The soy sauces are more than your Kikkoman Light in a green bottle. I’ve found some unexpected combinations on the menu(prosciutto, for example) along with the standbys I’ve come to crave. Any sort of tuna or salmon hits the spot, often spicier the better, and G&GS provides flair and fun combinations in spades. The prices are reasonable, if a bit on the high end at first glance. Roll size is satisfactory to satiate the hungry beast inside, for the most part. I find the rice content to be a touch too high in some of them, maybe because I am fixated on what’s nestled in that white grain bower like a Scottish damsel waiting for her illustrious and unbelievably named duke. But the creative mashup at Grab & Go is a welcome change from the tired variations. I haven’t had the problem of the other reviewers with sloppy rolls put together badly, so I hope it’s just a bad night. The view over Nine Mile is a pleasant counterpoint to the interior. No, it isn’t the swank style of Inyo or the cramped confines of Little Tree. What you come here for is summed up a bit in the name, and also the comfortable ability to stretch out in a chair without all the bells and whistles that so often send roll prices for sushi into the $ 15+/roll stratosphere. The casual, laid-back air works well in the downtown area.

If only we still lived in Ferndale, we would Grab & Go all the time! We only had veggie rolls but they all tasted great. The edamame salad was simple, but nice. It helps that the vegetables are really fresh. It’s not perfect yet. I do wish that the seaweed was a bit more crisp. With that said, I do appreciate that Grab & Go takes a contemporary spin on many of the rolls with fun combinations. And the various flavored soy sauces are fun, with the spicy soy sauce being especially addictive. Honestly, what more can you ask for when you pay $ 3 – 4 for a 12 piece roll? Repeat — these are 12 piece rolls! The prices are just so reasonable. And it doesn’t hurt that the owners are so nice and attentive. I can’t wait for more new creations from Grab & Go. My wish list: a specialty vegetarian roll, vegetarian udon/soba, and former Nami creations like using pesto, sugar, etc.

It seems that some people have no concept of what the term«sushi» means… it’s a method of food presentation, and does not specifically mean ‘raw fish’. Many«traditional» rolls(like the California roll for instance) are NOT traditional to Japan. Also, many other«traditional» rolls are cooked(such as eel and shrimp) and are considered sushi because of the preparation and presentation style. It’s a shame that some people who Unilocal reviews have no concept of what good quality is, and their simple palettes are unable to appreciate innovative, creative, or complex flavors. There is an old Chinese proverb which states, «Less on the walls, more in the kitchen.» I’m sorry that Grab & Go isn’t pretty enough for some people, but I go to restaurants to eat– not to stare at the decorations. The setting is downright trendy and modern… almost like what New York would offer. Shouldn’t the focus be on the actual cuisine? Why does sushi have to be stuffy? It’s basically a light lunch, or appetizer in Japan. It seems that some people just hate life and will search for anything to complain about. I have had nothing but consistently good meals at Grab & Go Sushi, and will continue to go back, as it’s the freshest & some of the more creative sushi I’ve had in the metro Detroit area.

Let me set the record straight here. This is NOT anywhere NEAR a 5 star establishment. This is not even really sushi. Proscuitto roll? Kobe Beef roll? If you’re up for non conventional sushi, be my guest. Give it a try but the sloppiness and the fact that they even call half the stuff on their menu«sushi» is insulting to the«sushi» name. We opted for a bit of conventional and non conventional to try and keep an open mind. We got tuna & salmon nigiri. The rice was so thick and wadded together that both my friend and I lost the rice before it made it to the soy. The proscuitto roll was interesting but was more of what would be expected to be floating about on trays at a cocktail party and is in NO way sushi just because it was wrapped up in a little roll. The Kobe Beef roll was mentioned by another Unilocaler, so we decided we’d try it. This $ 9 dollar monstrosity was just a hot mess. Too much rice, falling apart, a strange mix of tough beef texture and soggy rice & asparagus & siriacha… I just don’t even know where to begin. If you are going to mess with the concept of sushi, you sure as heck better get it right. This just did not stack up. If it’s true sushi you crave, save yourself the trip. Just by the sloppiness of the food preparation I would not go back. Raw fish is nothing to mess with and if you can’t even make a solid roll that doesn’t fall apart I can’t imagine what kind of unsanitary practices are happening behind the scenes. We got drinks that were bottles of Vitamin Water and the sides had something slimy on them. To further the unclean feeling, the soy sauce flavor bottles all looked very mucky and unclean. I think it’s safe to say that those other 5 star reviews from people with only 1 review of just Grab n Go are clearly bunk. So be warned Unilocalers. This is NOT5 star sushi and is certainly NOT the best in town by any stretch of the imagination. What’s more, if you even need more, it’s a cafeteria type setting… trying really hard to be «Zen» which irks me even more. The little Zen gardens on the table and the music & bamboo… quit trying to be something you’re not. Nothing about a cafeteria setting lends to a Zen like mindset, sorry Grab n Go. For me it was, miss miss and more miss… Good luck on your endeavors, I hope you find loyal patrons because that will certainly not be this chick…

Great sushi, very reasonable prices, and nice guys. They have pretty inventive rolls — not ur typical Japanese sushi. But it is all good! Make sure to get the miso soup and try the specialty soy sauces.
