I live nearby and I needed my nails done before going out of town. I walked in and was told to go choose a color, as is the usual with nail salons. Their colors are somewhat limited and they have some weird brand of polish I have never heard of before. They only had some OPI colors and a few Essie. The lobby area leaves a lot to be desired. They have like office chairs that they must have gotten from somewhere, it was strange. I was not there for long, they ushered me back to the pedi area. I sat in a chair and the lady got to work. They put way too much of the blue stuff in the water. My feet turned blue!!! It was crazy. So the lady scrubbed it all off and overall, she did a good job. I have no complaints with my pedi I went over to the mani area and she had me wash my hands before she put on the lotion which was weird. It was at this point that we kind of had some words. I did not realize she didn’t speak any English up until this point. She told me to go wash my hands and I asked where the sink was. She told me to go wash my hands. I said«where is the sink?!» She raised her voice to me and told me to go wash my hands. Like yeah, I know!!! Where the hell is the sink??? I figured it out, washed my hands, paid her, and she did my mani. I knew it was going to be a nightmare because she put on two coats of this thick ass, gummy topcoat. Ughhhh!!! I sat under the dryer for 30 minutes. I kid you not. It wasn’t one of those professional dryers, it was just a wooden thing with a fan in it. I hate those, they are useless. Of course as soon as I got home, I chipped a nail. At least it was reasonably priced but i’d rather pay more and have them do a good job.

A friend suggested #1 Nails back in the fall. I haven’t gone anywhere else since! I especially like Nam and Ms. Dawn. The establishment is just big enough to accommodate a decent amount of people. I always get the shellac polish. I’m a musician so I use my hands a lot and the polish really keeps nicely! They grow out after about two or so weeks and then I have them removed and re-done. Pretty simple. Highly recommended! Oh! Pretty color selections too!

I wanted somewhere clean, reliable, quick and with great designs so I tried this salon and I am completely satisfied. The prices are reasonable, the personnel are friendly and I hate waiting so I call for same-day appointments and avoid the wait. They not only do nails and pedicures but they offer a wide range of services including massages. After a couple of times they remember you by name and are very personable and make you feel right at home. Everyone I have referred there has always been satisfied with their services. I’m glad I found #1 Nails!

I really wanted to give this place a good review. I did like the woman that did my nails –but personality is not enough. First, the lobby leaves a lot to be desired. In my opinion the salon does not present as profession or clean. I want to be clear though — it IS clean — but it just looks rundown and sad. The polish colors are limited, especially for shellac. This was disappointing as well. There weren’t any«it» colors for Spring or Summer. Okay — now for the actual. I asked for a shellac/gel manicure — what I got was a shellac/gel polish change. My cuticles were not addressed, my hands were not soaked. As quickly as my polish came off, new was applied. And boy — was it applied poorly. The polish had bubbles in it, the coat was uneven, some was stuck to my skin and as I walked out of the salon it was already lifting. My nails had sharp edges and were uneven. You’re probably all saying, «Why didn’t you say anything?» Because I shouldn’t have to. I was a first time customer, and for me, first time is all about observation. If I like what you do — I’ll be back & I will be more specific in my services. However, straight out of the gate, I like to see what you’re working with. Skip this place. Not worth it.

I got my first shellac manicure done here yesterday. I walked in, it was a Saturday morning, and didn’t have to wait. The guy who did my nails, Nam, was friendly and talkative. Turns out, he bought the business several months back and is the new owner as of Fall 2014. The manicure was quick, professional, and affordable. $ 20 for a no-frills shellac polish, and it looks amazing. This place could easily become my go-to spot.

I AMVERYHAPPY! I just found my new nail salon while I am visiting my family in Metro Detroit! I drove by it and was intrigued by the cheap prices advertised on the window. I wanted to get my nails looking perfect for the holidays, so I decided to try this place. I was very pleased with the results. It’s $ 10 for a fill-in and $ 15 for a full set. It’s also $ 15 for shellac or gel nails, yes the ones you have to have dry under a UV light and lasts for up to 2 weeks. Coming from NYC these prices were very cheap and affordable. Jackie and her husband are the new owners. The place is under new management and everything was updated and remodeled. Definitely check the place out!

Every lady in Detroit must be out to get her eyebrows and mani/pedi done this week because I’ve bombed out at three regular places for a simple procedure of eyebrow waxing. Running out of time in advance of a wedding and unable to find anything near work, I turned to one of the new spas which recently opened along the west end stretch of Nine Mile. My first choice was booked up solid for the night, so I went right next door to Number One nails. The place follows the script for non-descript nail salon pretty well. Anonymous décor, fairly spacious layout and a host of nail polish bottles cluttered along the front counter instead of on the wall spells a likely unremarkable experience. It’s not a place I would go for a manicure, but a $ 10 eyebrow wax requires less discerning tastes while in a rush. Boxes and a couch fill half the backroom, and the waxing room consists of a floor-level lawn chair, a pot of wax, a mirror, and a cabinet. Not exactly inspiring much confidence but $ 10 is $ 10, and I wasn’t about to try working my way down Nine Mile or pay $ 25 for Rouge. And most likely all the posh hipster gals in Ferndale were there en masse, with my luck this week. The older woman doing my brows made up some for the lackluster décor, applying wax with a practiced hand in a not entirely pain-free process. She snipped and waxed, then did minor clean-up with tweezers. The process was neither belaboured nor obsessively attentive to detail, and the results are a clean arch without the spectacular elegance I’ve found elsewhere. My natural shape comes through and I don’t look like a creature who escaped from the Wild Carnival display at the zoo, so we’re good. In a pinch, it’s a reasonable stop but not a place I would become a regular of. Free parking is available next door, but they don’t accept credit cards and they close a bit early. ** CASHONLY **
